Amber. Rags to Riches Dog of the Year.

Amber came to the UK and was fostered for a short while by Liz until she was adopted by Karen. To quote Karen “Amber just wanted to be loved, belong and matter. In the short time we had her she blossomed and lapped up all the love, care and attention. She was the happiest dog I have ever known, after what must have been a lifetime of pain and suffering.” Sadly after six short months she developed internal complications and they had to let her go.

Rags to Riches wanted to honour this beautiful girl, who although was only here a short time was so loved.

Rags to Riches Romanian Dog Rescue

The objects of the CIO are:

For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of dogs in Romania in need of care, treatment, and protection and in particular to provide rescue homes or other facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals.

To promote humane behaviour towards dogs in Romania by raising awareness, providing appropriate care, treatment, and protection, for dogs which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals.

Provisions of services: Policy

Funding and oversight of appropriate care, treatment, and protection of dogs whilst they are in Romania and being prepared to travel to the UK. This includes all veterinary treatment, microchipping, neutering, vaccinations, and appropriate shelter.
Funding and oversight of purchases made for the above including medications.
Funding and oversight of transport to the UK
Safe and experienced care in vetted foster homes to include veterinary treatment if required.
Safe, pre-checked adoption homes in the UK - all dogs’ microchip registrations remain in dual registration with the Charity for the life of the dog.
Ongoing support for adopters and dogs
Spay/neuter campaign funding in Romania.
Education and awareness raising
Networking on behalf of the plight of dogs needing rescuing in Romania.

Chair and Trustee Report

2024-25 has been another good year for Rags to Riches.

We have had some beautiful dogs brought in over the year who have gone on to wonderful homes. Our first ‘Rommie’ to be registered with the Kennel Club ‘Rags to Riches Ragabond’ or Thornton as he is known at home is a very successful agility dog. We are so proud of both Lynn & Thornton. Lynn has recently become a Trustee and will be a wonderful asset to the team, having already organised a night out with band in Northallerton which was a great success., and has lots more ideas.

Dawn continues to raise lots of money through the pre-loved sales with her large band of volunteers. Other fundraisers help to bring in well needed funds. Many are for specific dogs, food for public shelters and even to repair vehicles the rescuers in Romania cannot do without.

Our dog show this year was in Settrington and we hope to use these premises on a regular basis. New regulations are being brought in October 2025 in around Brucellosis testing for imported dogs. Whist we do not have full details yet; this can only continue to make it harder to import dogs from Romania.

Costs have yet again risen, especially transport which we have had some difficulties with but are now settled with a new company.

Our future plans are to continue to support Valcea and Birda as well as other rescues who may have emergencies, individual dogs needing help, helping mainly with food veterinary bills. We also will continue to look for more fosterers to allow us to bring over more dogs.

We sincerely thank everyone for their support including those who wish to stay anonymous. While we can't mention everyone individually, we truly appreciate all the help and apologise for any omissions.

The rescuers in Romania who are true angels they continue to work tirelessly helping the dogs on the streets and in the public shelters in particular we would like to thank volunteers Florentina Cioaca and Nicoleta Stefanescu in Valcea (Saving Valcea’s Dogs), Carmen Borka - Stanescu in Birda Timisoara (Angels 4 Animals rescue) and all the tireless rescuers helping desperate dogs in Romanian.

To all our volunteers, who have helped with our fundraising events in the last year, in particular Dawn and her wonderful team for putting on the clothes shows.

To all our fantastic supporters who have donated prizes, taken up subscriptions, donated money, sold raffle tickets, and taken part in our fundraising activities online.

To the transport companies who deliver our dogs safely from Romania.

To our fosterers who work tirelessly with the foster dogs, with love, care and patience to ensure they have a happy life ahead of them.

The Joys of Fostering

I started fostering rescue dogs for a small but wonderful charity they are a great bunch, not sure what they saw in me, but they also asked me to be a trustee, I was honoured they had that much faith in me.

This post is for them, just a little tongue in cheek observation of life in a rescue organisation and is aimed at no one and as always huge thanks to our supporters and wonderful adopters that I have personally encountered this year, a bit of a long one but hopefully thought provoking for some. Just some of my personal favourites.

“I see you have XYZ dog for adoption what breed is it?” Me frantically looking at the blurb I put on fb, yep definitely put mixed breed, note to self maybe a longer explanation is required. When the stray dog population runs rampant, there is a lot of jiggy jiggy resulting in a wonderful mixture I like to call Romanian special breed, does that help?

Message: ‘ Can you tell me a bit more about XYZ dog’ end of message. Thinking cap on with this one, 'They are wonderful, is that what you wanted to know'?

‘What is XYZ dog like with children?’ Me. 'well they can't eat a whole one, is that what you wanted to know'? No Jane you can't put that!

Sensible answer required, what are your kids like with dogs? You do know as adults it is your responsibility to police the introduction and their behaviour towards the doggy. Believe me if one of our Rommies has a particular dislike to the little cherubs they won't be homed with children and we will say so in the ad.

What is XYZ like with cats, I refer you to the answer above, just insert the word cat

‘I know you said that the XYZ dog needs to be homed with adults only do you make exceptions? My children aged 2, 4 and 8 are lovely.’ My response, ' Of course we can, we just put that in the ad for our own amusement'!

Home trials : ‘XYZ dog has been here 23 minutes and she doesn't get on with my little precious, she was only being friendly when she jumped up and down on top of her wanting to play, what is the problem with XYZ dog.’ Me, did you by any chance read the behaviour assessment I lovingly spent 2 hours writing and the other articles I got for you all lovingly put together in that little pack I gave you on adoption day and did you by any chance listen to the conversations we had about settling in? 'Oh you mean the paperwork, I put that in the drawer'

‘XYZ dog has been here 3 days and I don't think they like me, they won't come and sleep with me on my bed, sorry they will have to come back’ (true story) I also refer you to above answer.

‘Will I have to travel to you to meet the dog? Do you do deliveries, you are 2 hours away from me, that is too far for me to come.’

Me: ' No that is absolutely fine, I will do all the running about and accommodate your needs in every way, I have absolutely nothing else to do, I will put my life, job and dogs on hold whilst I sort you out' Obviously in the ad I kept it a huge secret where the dog was being fostered.

‘How much is the adoption fee?’ ‘ I don't mind giving a donation but that is too much, you are lucky this dog is being offered a home.’

Me. ‘That is absolutely fine, the transporters, vets and rescuers all work for shirt buttons and we are truly grateful that the £50 you are offering is considered more than enough'

My first 12 months with R2R (of hopefully many)! By Louise Bermingham

In the beginning…..

11 October 2024. I remember this day clearly – standing in the queue for the bar at South Wales Champ Show and who should be standing behind me? Liz Jay. I’ve known Liz’s face for nearly as many years as I’ve been showing. We exchanged news whist we waited, and I learned that her beautiful Rommie – Rafaella had passed away suddenly. We exchanged much needed hugs and continued our day. Little did I (or for that matter Liz), know what was to come.

Just two weeks later, I lost a beautiful girl of my own. Both I and my Estrela – Rainha were bereft. I remembered my conversation at the bar with Liz and my increasing desire over the past few years to offer a home to a dog who needed it - whether that be by foster or adoption. I’d trained and handled dogs for years – it was my turn to ‘help’.

4 December 2025. To be precise. 1.26pm.

I jest not. I remember the very minute. I was at work, waiting for a meeting to start at 1.30, scrolling through Facebook to pass the time. The most beautiful image hit me - a young bitch in Ecosal public shelter in Romania. In that split second, I knew she belonged with me. And I would do whatever I needed to, to get her. I’ve never been so distracted in a meeting in my life! (and yes, I was late to it).

Knowing what I know now, it was possibly a bit daft falling in love with a dog in a foreign public shelter. I had no knowledge of how to get her out of there; how to get her to the UK; or any knowledge or understanding of the absolute horrors that she would have been exposed to and the extensive care and rehabilitation that would be needed. Would I do it again? Of course I would.

Ella arrived in the UK on the 13 January 2025. It was icy cold and she was carried into my home in the arms of a lovely Romanian lady and driver. She had a warm bed and segregated area in my kitchen set aside. She literally crawled into her bed and barely moved for two days. Frightened and bewildered I cannot imagine what must have been going through her mind. I just sat with her. Talked to her. Didn’t fuss her much and didn’t push her at all. In time, she explored the house and garden. I figured

very quickly that my dog-proof garden was not Ella proof and I had to raise the fence. Ella slowly got used to the noises of the washing machine, the TV, (still doesn’t like the hoover), and other noises and occurrences in the home that we take for granted. She needed to be

walked on a harness as had a very negative reaction to a collar – probably because she was snared in Romania at some point. She is now at a point that she can wear a collar, but I would never rely solely on this. I’ve learned she has many deep-rooted negative memories and I simply manage our lives with, and around them. She is frightened of people, and no amount of coaxing will convince her otherwise. But – instead of viewing as a negative, I

thank my lucky stars that we are honoured that she loves us, and we are some of the very chosen few humans she permits in her life. She now sleeps every night on my bed with me, has a best friend in Rainha, spends more of her life upside down than on her feet and loves no food better than crunchy wotsits.

Without the support of R2R and the amazing people within it, I quite simply couldn’t have got Ella to the UK. But R2R are just some of the equation that enable us help the dogs. There are numerous rescuers in Romania who literally devote their entire waking hours lives to physically helping ‘nobody’s dogs’. People in other countries who spend endless hours on the internet – raising the profile of ‘nobody’s dogs’ so that people like you and I can see them. That’s how I found Ella – through a lady called Nina who actually lives in Norway! These people are all amazing, completely selfless, and I wanted to emulate some of that.

Springtime 2025…. What more can I do?

I asked this question of Liz. I wanted to help more dogs. So what was my first job? Judge the annual R2R dog show!

I judge at shows regularly but have never been more nervous of a judging appointment in my life! This was something special. 8 classes of truly special dogs and people. The sun shone, venue excellent, some fab stalls – all there to raise money for the cause. First class up were the youngsters, followed by golden oldies, little cuties, gentle giants, the list goes on. The most coveted class and most memorable for me, was the Rescue class. I stood in the middle of that ring

. " 2) ee surrounded by 28 amazing and totally unique dogs and their humans. I’m not ashamed to admit I shed a few tears. I was truly overwhelmed. I listened to

everyone’s stories of how their much loved dogs came to be with them. They were all winners. I talked that long the weather decided it had had enough and

within minutes of awarding Best In Show to the lovely Sadie – the heavens opened. The whole day was amazing and raised some much needed funds for R2R.

Another step….

I took in my first R2R foster in August. Noah immediately made himself at home within minutes - a totally different experience to when Ella arrived. He was full of personality and made friends with Rainha immediately. Ella took a little longer to accept him but once she did, I honestly feel she turned another corner in her own development. It was like she realised she wasn’t the ‘newbie’ anymore and had a and had a responsibility to show him the ropes. I warmed to Noah immediately. I really had to prepare myself emotionally for the difference between fostering and adopting – the thing I kept saying to myself, was if he stayed with me, it may limit my ability to foster more. I found him an excellent home….. With my Mum! He now lives with an Estrela and a Podengo and I really don’t think he could be

happier.

I felt so so elated! I done it. I’d actually fostered a dog in need and found it a home. The personal satisfaction was immense. It was a wrench letting him go but I still see him most days and he always walks into my home like he owns it.

Belle arrived in November. A little terrier type who felt the cold, she had come across with Labus who was fostered with Liz. I followed their entire journey practically minute by minute from the moment they left Romania.

Not sure I slept for three days.

Belle truly wiggled her way into our lives and Rainha in particular, adored her. The sight of seeing them snuggling together each night in bed whilst Rainha washed Belle’s head really made me wonder if she should stay. But seeing the joy she has brought to her new family – Paul, Ann and Amy (another R2R success story of her own) convinced me that it was the right thing to do. Belle and Amy are the best of friends, and I understand that Amy is much happier since Belle’s arrival.

So, what next?

I’m hoping to have another R2R foster arriving next month. This one I’ve chosen myself (oops) and I’ve already fallen in love (double oops). But let’s see. The future isn’t written and I’m a true believer in fate. They will have an amazing home – and it will be a far cry from where they currently are, whether that be with me or a different loving family.

Having a Rommie in my life is different to my other dogs. I’m protective of Ella and my fosters in such a fierce, passionate way. I want to keep them safe from any more harm and would literally walk over hot coals to do so. I’ve learned many lessons over the past 12 months, met some wonderful people and felt emotionally enriched in ways I never thought possible. I’ve shed tears of sorrow, of joy, I’ve changed the charities that I make regular donations to, and ‘educated’ my work colleagues and friends, who probably know more about Rommies than they ever expected or wanted to know. The situation in Romania truly is dire, but without people like you and me, the situation would be worse.

Changing the life of one dog won’t change the world. But it will change that one dog’s world forever

The Great North Run 2024

We are pleased to announce that our dedicated team of runners, Julia, David, Emma and Katie completed the Great North Run and made nearly £900 in September 2024.

The Great North Run is a half marathon, measuring 13.1 miles (21.1 kilometres) long and is the largest half marathon in the world, taking place annually in Northeast England each September.

The commitment and effort required to not only run the marathon but to prepare for an event of this nature is substantial and takes months of hard work is and we would like to thank the team for all their wonderful dedication to Rags to Riches. In the knowledge that the money they have raised goes to saving and improving the lives of dogs in Romania.

Welcoming your new arrival.

Rags to Riches usually fosters dogs arriving from Romania for a 2 weeks with a minimum of 48 hours in certain circumstances. This gives us a short time to assess each dog and hopefully match up the adoptees and dogs best suited to enable the best happiest life together. But it is not definitive assessment. Two weeks is not always long enough, and we will keep a dog longer. (as well as become failed fosterers at times). We work with the dog’s needs and adoptees need to do the same, based on the full written assessment you will receive from the fosterer. This article could be ten times longer so if you need help, support or advice, please get in touch with your fosterer or Rags to Riches via our Facebook group, or email r2rrr@outlook.com . The following applies to fosterers and adopters.

First impressions aren’t reliable—overwhelm can mask true behaviour. Give your new dog time, patience and a safe quiet place. Don’t take him to the nearest pub on your way home, this happened, they let the dog off the lead in the pub, and of all people to choose it bite my husband. (only a scratch). The dog was scared and confused, didn’t know anyone and was trying to protect itself.

What to do instead: Use management tools from the start to ensure safety while your dog adjusts. Don’t assume too much, plan with caution.

Make Safety Your Top Priority

They don’t know you. They have travelled across Europe for days in a small crate. Most of them have an only little or an unknown history. They have learnt a little trust with their fosterer, then been uprooted again. Fearful dogs can escape quickly, often within 48 hours, using any gap or weak spot. They may go over or under fences or slip through doors and gates in moments. It’s surprising, my last little dog Sammy managed to get through a very small (maybe 3”/4” gap in criss cross fence into the field behind us. Fortunately, he doesn’t like big open spaces and ran straight back to us, it could have been a disaster. The fence was replaced the next day. Another dog I fostered spent hours lying down and checking if she could get her head under the gates, fences right around the garden, she couldn’t but she would have gone if she could have.

Fence gaps
Loose panels
Open windows
Doors/gates that don't latch
Gaps under gates and fences
Weak points a stressed dog might target
Places where other people can enter.

Treat your environment like you’re welcoming a highly skilled escape artist - because you might well be.

Give Time & Space to Settle and Decompress

In the first few days, your new arrival needs:

A quiet, safe space away from busy areas
No visitors, training, or big outings
Minimal pressure
Clear boundaries and management
Plenty of rest

This decompression period is crucial for them to adjust to their new environment, process new stimuli, and start feeling secure with you and your family.

Space Management in the Home

It’s important to have a plan for creating safe spaces if your new pet feels overwhelmed, especially if there are children or other animals at home. Tools like baby gates, crates (some dogs are not comfortable with crates, (I offer a crate with its door open and a blanket over the top ((as sometimes it feels safe for them)), as well as a comfy dog bed). pens, separate rooms with doors, or room dividers can help prevent problems and offer a quiet place for your newcomer to relax.

Even confident dogs can get stressed, and those who seem withdrawn might suddenly react if they feel threatened, crowded, or startled. While you may not always need a separate area, it’s wise to have one available so your new dog can rest undisturbed—they’ll likely be very tired.

If you have children or other pets: Setting up this kind of management isn’t just recommended—it’s necessary. It helps keep everyone safe while your new dog settles in.

Feed Little and Often

The sudden lifestyle change and travel can upset digestion. Offering small, frequent meals reduces digestive stress, lowers the risk of issues, supports recovery, and helps promote relaxation and sleep by keeping pets satisfied. I personally feed my dogs raw three times a day (but they are very little) Chicken can be gentle on their tummy, if you prefer cooked food chicken (no bones of course) with some rice that will do. Start any other food gradually. Be advised by your fosterer who will give you some of the food they have been having while in foster care.

Behaviour is Information & Communication

A dog's initial behaviour may not reflect their true nature—signs like growling or guarding can indicate stress, or anxiety, while calmness might mean they are shut down. Recognising these signals allows for empathetic responses, as behaviour is a dog's way of communicating their feelings.

Not All Dogs Want Immediate Affection

Physical touch is personal for dogs, just as it is for people. Many dogs—especially those from overseas rescues who may have lacked positive human contact—need time before accepting touch. Unless a dog clearly seeks interaction, give them space to adapt.

They will let you know when they’re ready for tickles.

Each dog adjusts at their own pace. Some settle quickly; others may need much longer. Whether a dog arrives fearful, confident, or eager, there's no universal timeline.

Focus on your dog's individual needs. (for adopters, please read the fosters assessment)

Patience Prevents Problems.

Adopting an overseas rescue dog is about laying solid, safe foundations—not busy activity from the beginning.

– ’ Rags to Riches Independent Examiner s report of 24/25 accounts

1. Introduction

1.1. I report to the Trustees on my examination of the accounts of Rags to Riches for the year ended 31[st] March 2025.

2. Responsibilities and Basis of the Report

2.1. As the Charity Trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.
2.2. I report in respect of my examination of the Trusts accounts carried out under Section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed applicable directions given out by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

3. Independent Examiner’s Statement

3.1. I have completed an examination of the records held and I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the act; or
the accounts do not accord with those records.

4. Noted Findings

Expenditure

4.1. A random sample of 12 items of expenditure was chosen from the items recorded on the bank statement.
4.2. Anomalies were identified for 2 out of the 12 transactions checked which were for no receipts being held on file. Both of these were for payments made to Angels 4 Animal Rescue which the auditor is aware are sometimes unable to provide receipts.

Income

4.3. A random sample of 12 donations was chosen and attempts were made to ensure that there was a corresponding entry on the bank statement or PayPal listing. No anomalies were identified.
4.4. Receipt books and cash held were not checked as part of this audit.

Reconciliation

4.5. A review of the monthly totals spreadsheet was conducted to verify that the amounts recorded were accurate and complete.

5.1. Receipts should be kept for all purchases made as evidence that the purchases are for legitimate charity business, this includes any donations made.

Ninth Annual Report Overview

The present document marks the ninth annual report of Rags to Riches since its registration as a charity. Our financial activities throughout the year have been subject to a thorough review by an independent examiner. The examiner’s report highlights that, there are two missing receipts, which on reflection are for donations sent without specific reason (just to help). Otherwise, the examiner is quite satisfied. This reflects our ongoing commitment to maintaining clear and reliable financial records, while also acknowledging the occasional practical difficulties in securing documentation for certain transactions.

Transparency and Receipts

Obtaining receipts for donations, particularly when supporting other volunteers across Romania, has historically been a challenge. While this remains an occasional difficulty, there has been a notable improvement in the situation, and it is becoming easier to secure the necessary documentation.

Nevertheless, we maintain full transparency in our financial processes. All monetary transactions can be traced via our bank statements or PayPal records, ensuring clear accountability. These funds are always utilised for their intended purposes, as has been confirmed by the independent examiner.

Transport Costs and Donations

Transport costs have continued to rise this year because of the ongoing fuel crisis. Despite these increased expenses, we have primarily utilised the services of a single transport company, with whom we are extremely satisfied. Their reliability and service quality have been instrumental in ensuring the smooth relocation of animals to their new homes.

The adoption donation remains set at £400 per adoption, which helps to offset some of these rising costs. However, considering the current financial pressures, we may need to review this amount in the future to ensure the sustainability of our operations.

Subscriptions

Subscription income continues to average around £250 per month, though there can be fluctuations from month to month. We recognise the importance of these regular contributions and are keen to encourage more of our supporters to subscribe, as this consistent support greatly aids our planning and ongoing efforts.

financial compensation. The charity continues to benefit from the generosity of its supporters and members, who have been particularly responsive during emergency situations. Their ongoing commitment is greatly appreciated and remains vital to the charity’s success.

As we look forward to the coming year, we anticipate welcoming new dogs into our care, as well as inviting new members and supporters to join our community. The continued involvement of our supporters is essential to achieving our mission and sustaining our efforts.

The charity’s annual income was £15,565, with outgoings of £12,193, showing less than the previous year for both figures but still a steady fundraising and spending that support its stability. Fundraising and donations are frequently difficult to divide as often we receive monies unmarked, so a bit of guess work must be used. The same happens with subscriptions.
