An inhospiiable welcome
The Home Office provides basic accommodation
in shared houses for people who are wailing for
a decision on their asylum claim. By Ihe end of
the year, there were five of these "NASS- houses
in Brighlon & Hove. They ore managed by two
private oulsourced agencies (Migrant Help ond
Cleorspring Ready Homes).
There is no internel conneclion included under
the conlrocl wilh the Home Office. As we feel that
access lo Ihe inlernel is obsolutely essential for
ony kind of -inclusion" we raised funds to pay
for Ihis for each house. The residents are
extremely gralelul for this (see poge 6).
We also bought eoch house extra blankets and
portable healers during a very cold snap in
Januory (Ihonks to o granl from Brighton & Hove
City Council) and supplied tablets lor residents
who needed them to access the inleinet.
Several of us have also laken responsibility for
being o contact person for each house, as it
appeared Ihol. particularly during lockdown. Ihey
were having gieal difficulty conlacling the
managing agents if any domestic problems
occurred.11 lurned out Ihol quite a number were
experiencing difficulties in attending doctor's and
lawyer's appoinlmenls where Iiansport was
necessary. due to Iheir very smoll weekly
allowance of £49, and we were pleased to be
able to help oul financially.
At Christmas, os o nod to the festive season, we
decided lo lake each household a "hamper of

An absoluie lifeline
AS is an asylum seeker awaiting his inteNiew for Leave lo Remain. He has been moved a couple of
times from other cities in the UK. so when he came to Brighlon on New Year's Eve. he wos very
unsettled as he had losl many of the friendships and support nelwoiks he'd made along the way.
The NASS house where he is housed has no WiFi - it's not part of Ihe housing providers remit to provide
Ihis- so with AS'S limited access to funds. he was unable lo keep in touch wilh his community or make
new connections in Ihe city.
T4K were able lo provide WiFi for all of the residenls in his house, which hus been an absolute lifeline.
AS con access online English closses, keep in louch with his legal team, watch TV- a vital means lo
relax and occupy his lime- along wilh all the other necessities Ihol come from living in a virtual world.
In May, there was a problem with the WiFi for o couple of weeks when il was accidentally disconnecled.
and during this time our volunteer noticed AS'S menlal health deleriorole. Without being able lo make
Ihose essential connections or have Ihe ability to switch off and relax. he became very upset. The
problems he'd encountered in his country of origin. as well os his journey lo the UK. loomed large.. he
felt even les5 in control of his welfare. and il wos on extremely distressing time for him.
When the WiFi was fixed. he quickly became less cul off and unhappy. Of course. having WiFi doesn'l
make his problems disoppear, but il is so necessary lo feeling connecled as well os helping him aC￿sS
the basics such a5 healthcare. which most of us toke for granled.
