The Directors of the Mandela8 charitable organisation are its Trustees (as required by charity law) and are collectively referred to as the Trustees throughout the report.
2019 has been a significant year for the Mandela8 group, seeing valuable progressions with local and international collaborators as the charity’s aims and ambitions are pursued.
## **Charity Background**
The campaign to commemorate the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was established in December 2013 in response to an overwhelming feeling within the community and around the world for a lasting legacy to be established in his memory. The campaign has been supported from inception by Liverpool City Council and was endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in November 2016 when they officially announced their patronage at our launch event in November 16.
Mandela’s death in 2013 brought local people in Toxteth, Liverpool 8 together, gathering at the gates of Princes Park. An informal memorial sprung up as people left tributes at the gates. People began speaking for the first time about the need for a permanent memorial, the first conversations that led to what is now Mandela8.
The requirements of the location for the memorial to represent the values Nelson Mandela stood for and it being a reflective space; not on main thoroughfare; provides safe access; enough space to perform; be creative; enable educational use and be big enough to accommodate significant numbers of visitors and tourists was paramount. Research and consultation identified ‘The Island’ in Princes Park, Liverpool 8 as the ideal location for the memorial due to synergies with Mandela’s incarceration on an island; significance of a former bridge; and opportunities to create linkages. This was endorsed on a site visit by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2016.

- Liverpool City Council, especially its Culture, Parks and Environmental Services units and tourism unit Marketing Liverpool
- Young arts commissioners from Tiber Young Peoples Project in Toxteth and other community organisations
- North West Trade Union movement
- Facebook members (currently 1900+)
- Friends of Princes Park Group
- Local Primary and Secondary Schools Major cultural organisations including Africa Oye Housing associations

## **Objects and activities of the charity**
_**The purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document**_
## The Charity’s objects are:
1) To advance arts, culture and heritage in Princes Park and the surrounding areas of Liverpool 8 for public benefit through the installation of a memorial to Nelson Mandela and a series of educational programmes promoting diversity.
2) To undertake educational programmes to improve life chances of individuals of all ages.
3) To alleviate poverty.
## **Structure, governance and management of the charity**
## _**The charity’s organisational structure**_
In the year under review the Charity had four trustees all of whom are volunteers and who met together approximately every eight weeks. The trustees have overall control and responsibility for policy and major decision making. All directors are trustees.
Day to day management and responsibility for implementing policies is carried out by the trustees.
## **Trustee Report**
The trustees confirm that the annual report and financial statement for Mandela8 contained within this report comply with current statutory requirements. The accounts were also independently verified, which are attached at the end of this report.
## _**The main activities undertaken in relation to those purposes during the year:**_
To accomplish its main objective the Charity actively promotes and undertakes events and fundraising activities to secure resources towards the installation of the memorial as a legacy to promote diversity, equality and social justice to become the focal point for a series of future educational programmes.
_**The main activities undertaken during the year to further the Charity’s purpose for public benefit:**_
Ongoing work to fulfill installation on the memorial.
Continued delivery of our educational programmes to promote diversity, equality and social justice including: My67 Minutes; Roots and Wings; Black History Month webinar.
Exhibition developed and installed in National Museums Liverpool Museum of Life.
National Lottery Heritage Fund projects.

## _**The short and longer term aims and objectives:**_
The objectives of the Charity are:
1) To establish a permanent artwork, in Princes Park, Toxteth, Liverpool, to celebrate and commemorate Nelson Mandela’s outstanding achievements for humanity. The installation will reflect Mandela’s life, his love of gardens and horticulture, his teaching and passion for equality and humanity. It will also provide space for learning, events, and reflection. Integrating Nelson Mandela’s words into the artwork will be a powerful way to tell the narrative and communicate his messages and relevance to Toxteth, Liverpool and wider society today.
2) To develop a series of educational projects and programmes. The artwork will act as a focal point to embed and advance Nelson Mandela's legacy and values through the development and delivery of education projects for people of all ages - in social inclusion, community cohesion, antiterrorism, and the importance of citizenship in today’s society. These programmes and projects will be supported by interactive resources such as films, educational toolkits, and a website.
3) To develop a range of partnerships and collaborations with local, national, and international organisations to enable the charity to achieve its aims.
- 4) To undertake educational programmes to improve life chances of individuals of all ages.
5) To alleviate poverty.
## _**The Charity’s strategies for achieving its aims and objectives in the future:**_
The Charity’s strategies for achieving its stated objectives have been to continue to strengthen relationships developed with key partners such as Liverpool City Council and patrons supporting the Charity to secure funding and strengthen funding opportunities. The Charity continues to maintain and manage funds secured to support on-going work to further its objectives.
Our work with appointed consultants to develop design proposals and develop our fundraising strategy have also been essential to furthering the Charity’s objectives.
The Charity will seek to maximise the benefits of partnership and collaboration to support the realisation of its aims.
## _**The contribution of volunteers during the year:**_
The Charity currently has a governing body of four trustees who are all volunteers.
The Charity also has a working group with a number of representatives from the following organisations who all contribute voluntarily towards furthering the objectives of the Charity: Liverpool City Council; ; Africa Oye; Unite Union; One Fell Swoop; National Museums Liverpool; MSB Solicitors; Torus Foundation.

## _**The main achievements and performance of the charity during the year:**_
Mandela8 has realised a number of significant milestones to further the work during this 2020-21 financial year, including:
## **May 2020:**
Following a recruitment campaign in April 2020, Mandela8 announced that Laurence Westgaph had been appointed as their new Community Heritage Project Manager.
The political activist and television presenter will head up a new project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, that will uncover and reveal key elements of Liverpool 8’s community heritage, with a particular focus on activism during the years of the anti-apartheid struggles and on local people’s connections with Princes Park.
Also in May 2020, Mandela8 launched a Crowdfunder campaign to raise money for to support local vulnerable families with family food parcels, hygiene parcels and activity packs for children.
## **June 2020:**
Mandela8 announce Kim Johnson, MP for Riverside, as their newest patron.
Kim, Liverpool’s first Black MP, was born and grew up in Liverpool 8 and still lives in her constituency. Becoming politically active as a teenager, attending rallies and demonstrations, fighting racism and fascism, Kim is a lifelong trade unionist committed to fighting for social justice for all her constituents.
## **July 2020:**
Mandela8 marks Mandela Week in 2020 by encouraging the public to take part in a whole week of activities aimed at promoting community cohesion and highlighting those who have been affected by
the ongoing pandemic, under the My 67 Minutes programme. Much of the programme goes online due to the ongoing lockdowns and restrictions.
Also in July 2020, Mandela8 announced Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central, as their newest patron. The first ever elected African-Caribbean woman to become a Government Minister in the UK, Dawn ran a hugely successful campaign in 2015, winning her vote with a majority of nearly 20,000, giving the largest vote swing in England at the time.
## **August 2020:**
Mandela8 Chair, Sonia Bassey MBE is nominated for a Lifetime Achievers prize at the National Diversity Awards. The Awards – in association with ITV News – celebrates the achievements of grassroot communities that tackle the issues in today’s society, giving charities, role models and community heroes recognition for their dedication and hard work.
## **September 2020:**
The Crowdfunder launched earlier in the year is successful, raising £4,991 to fund the food parcels, hygiene parcels and activity packs. This adds on to additional funds raised through private donations

and bids which totaled an additional £25,000 (£10,000 through a partnership with Granby Toxteth Development Trust).
## **October 2020:**
Mandela8 announce LFC and England international, Trent Alexander-Arnold as their newest patron – specifically for the Roots and Wings programme.
## **December 2020:**
Mandela8 recruit Liverpool author and poet, Curtis Watt for major heritage project In L8. The local multi-artist will head up a new element of an ongoing heritage project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, that will uncover and reveal key elements of Liverpool 8’s community heritage, with a particular focus on activism during the years of the anti-apartheid struggles and on local people’s connections with Princes Park.
Mandela8 also successfully completed the Roots and Wings pilot project with 8 young people achieving 26 AQA qualifications.
## **March 2020**
‘Liverpool 8 Against Apartheid’ exhibition launches at the Museum of Liverpool in partnership with Mandela8.
Through this display, which will open when the Museum of Liverpool re-opens, you can discover some of the strong connections between the city’s Black community, Nelson Mandela and the antiapartheid movement.

## **Financial Review**
The charity held unrestricted reserves of £31,294 at 31[st] March 202. The Trustees feel this to be an adequate sum when set against turnover. The trustees confirm they are satisfied that the charity is a going concern.
## **Risk and uncertainty**
In terms of finances the biggest single risk Mandela8 faces is raising the finances required to achieve the aims and objectives of the charity. However, by the continuous review of a Risk Register the trustees of Mandela8 are constantly seeking to make provision for this eventuality plus all other major legal, operational or financial risks to which the Charity could be exposed.
At the point of writing this report (December 202), the charity has been impacted by Covid-19 both in terms of the installation of the memorial and delivering both the MY67 and Roots and Wings projects. Whilst there have been interruptions to the memorial works, it is envisaged that the memorial will be completed by the end of 2022. Both the MY67 programme and Roots & Wings project were both successfully delivered online and if necessary, can continue to be thus, resulting in no negative impact due to the Covid-19 virus.
## **Method of preparation of accounts**
The financial statements have been prepared implementing the FRS 102 SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting by Charities) 2015 (as amended by the Bulletin issued in February 2016) and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard 102, (effective 1st January 2016)
