Report of the trustees for the year ended 31 December 2024

The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2024. The trustees who served during the year and up to the date of this report are set out on page 3. The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Companies Act 2006, the Articles of Association and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

Structure, governance and management

DARUL QURRA AND ISLAMIC RESEARCH CENTRE is a registered charity governed by CIO - FOUNDATION REGISTERED 03 FEB 2017.

The charity trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits. The Board of Trustees consists of people that collectively have the skills, expertise and experience to ensure that the Charity is managed effectively. Where a vacancy arises a new trustee is appointed only by the passing of a resolution of the Board of Trustees.

Objectives and activities

The advancement of faith and religious practices of Islam inducing Sufism in accordance with Qur'an and Sunnah.

The advancement of education for the public benefit concerning teachings and practices of Islam including Sufism.

The advancement of general education for the public benefit concerning all forms of useful knowledge.

The provision of recreational facilities and activities in the interests of social welfare with the object of improving the conditions of life for those persons in need of such facilities and activities.

The advancement of both religious and racial harmony for the benefit of public.

Our objectives are set to reflect our faith and community aims. Each year our trustees review our objectives and activities to ensure they continue to reflect our aims. In carrying out this review the trustees have considered the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and in particular its supplementary public guidance on the advancement of religion for the public benefit. Our aim remains to provide a facility where Muslims can worship and to provide a community facility for all the inhabitants of Birmingham. Our long-term ambition is to build the self-confidence of Birmingham's Muslims in their faith, and through our community facilities and activities help make our area a peaceful, vibrant and harmonious community.

Activities

The charity carries out a wide range of activities in pursuance of its charitable aims. The trustees consider that these activities provide benefit both to those who worship at our Mosque and the wider community of Birmingham.

Future Objectives

The Charity hopes to raise more funds to furtherance of its objectives and find ways of further reducing its costs by encouraging more volunteer work.

Achievements and performance

During the year, the Charity successfully continued its core activities in furtherance of its objectives. Once again, it managed to raise a significant amount of donations to support its work.

As in the previous year, the Charity also prioritised educational outreach by organising guest lectures from esteemed scholars at mosques across the country, free of charge. This initiative strengthened donor support, enabling the Charity to continue its operations effectively and achieve an overall saving of £14,047 compared with the previous year, when payments had exceeded receipts.

Additionally, the Charity arranged an educational trip to Egypt for students and community members of Banbury Madani Mosque. This provided students with the opportunity to learn about ancient Egyptian civilisation and Sufi traditions, while also taking part in enriching recreational activities.

The Charity provided the following key benefits both locally and nationally:

  1. Free, high-quality education for local residents of Birmingham and communities nationwide, delivered through events and lectures by expert visiting scholars on Sufism and Qur’anic sciences;

  2. Provision of prayer facilities for the local community;

  3. Distribution of water, dates, and fruits to attendees during Ramadan;

  4. Monthly gatherings and communal meals for both ladies and gentlemen;

  5. Organisation of educational trips focused on Qur’anic sciences and Sufism.

The Charity was able to distribute a small amount of Zakat collected to poor families in Pakistan. The distribution took place with the help of volunteers and did not cost the Charity.

Financial review

The Charity had a good year in terms of donations collected from members and the community. The Charity has regular donors plus a few single donations. It is envisaged that this regular funding will continue for the foreseeable future.

The Charity also achieved notable savings in running costs by benefiting from the support of local volunteers and students, who assisted in leading prayers and organising educational events for the local community. This engagement was made possible through the free, high-quality education the Charity provides both locally and nationally.

In the previous year, a substantial portion of the Charity’s funds had been invested in upgrading its building to meet community needs, including improved educational and worship facilities. Thanks to the high standard of that development work, this year’s maintenance costs were reduced to just onesixth of the previous year’s expenditure.

6

Future Plans

Looking ahead, the Charity aims to build on the successes of the past year by further expanding its educational and community outreach activities. Plans include introducing additional courses and workshops on Qur’anic sciences, Arabic language, and Sufism, with a focus on engaging young people and women in particular. The Charity also intends to strengthen partnerships with other community organisations and mosques nationwide to widen access to its educational programmes. Efforts will be made to enhance digital learning resources, enabling remote participation for those unable to attend in person. Financially, the Charity will continue to focus on sustainability through careful cost management and the development of new fundraising initiatives to ensure long-term support for its objectives.

Statement of trustees' responsibilities

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
