Evolve Music is a grassroots cx)mmunily music charity based in Southwest England. Using sound exploration and
irllprovisation we co-cAeate music with comfflunities and support the development of music leaders and thè wder
community rnusic sector. Evolve Music believes everyone should have the opportunity lo benefit frorn partirypating
in community music, and we achieve this by remowng barriers to community mtssic partiapation experienced by
undèrserved communities such as those living in rural areas or those with experien￿ of poverty. domestic violence.
disability or migration.
Since 2017, Evolve Music has delivered thousands of partsupatory music actiMtie5 for young children, families,
neurodiv&rse young people and older people through a portfolio of projeds stretching ftom Bath io PlymoLJIh.
Additionally. it has built a profile as a prowder ol training. ne￿orknng and advocacy actiwties for the commLJnity
music seotor and Is Gontribuling to the eviden￿ that demonstratès rhe positive impacts of partiapatory music on
people and communities. In 2023 we are delivering projects in Plymouth, Newton Abbot. Bath, Bristol, Frome,
Radstock and Westorksuper-mare.
The trustees present their annual report and finan(ial statements for the year ended 31 March 2023.

Objeetlves and activities
The objectives of Evolve Music are to faulitate acr2ss to, improve. advance, rnaintain and promote education in the
art5 by providing increased opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to acces5 ¢reative music
makirlg workshops and by running sud) open-access music workshops.
lthen reviewing the Charity's aims and objectives, demsing new programmes and setting poliues for the year, the
trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance cA)ntained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on
public benefit and complied with thèir duty undet Sedion s1715) of the Charities Act 2011.
Achievements and performance
Sound Explorers is a capacty building project promoting a music cuhure in earfy years settings. It involves a 12-
week residellcy by music leaders in an earfy years settings that indudes h¥0 se55w)ns pèr week that provide group

l and CPD activity within the setting and has a signifitrAntly positive impact on young thildren
experieneing development delays and those p¥esenting with SOCAal, eduG4ts"onal and tnental health needs ISEMHI.
In 2022 2023 Eva￿e Music delivered three Sound Explorers residencies in eaAy years settings tn Plymouth.. The
Cabin YMCA, Greenshoots Pre-school and Woodfields Primary School Nursery.
The Claire Milne Trust. The Nomian Famity Charttable Tnjst. Vemon Ellis Foundation and Plymouth Music
Education Hub ftjnded Sound Exptorers wtth Universtty of Plymouth partnering through six Earfy Childhood Studies
and Music placements.

'The regular sessions have had a high impatt on the d)ildren's musit>lty, but also theif confidence, ht)w they
communic21e with each other and their emotional and social wellbeing. The Evolve team took lirre to understand
our pedagogical approach to our da11y practitr£ and ensured their sessions were in line. They provided adult-led
group lirlles with sltucture and opportunrties lor thildren to share theiT own ideas and prowded learning
provocations for children to practice their skills, be inventive and creative. This approach has built the Confidence of
the nursery staff and supported them through CPD and in the moment practice. The nursery staff have then taken
this positive support and felt encouraged to follow up the practice throughout the week and with the children who
attend on other days. We are seeing musical opportunities filter through thè session and the routines, building Il into
our daily practice through song, ditti'es and musicAI phrases..

Launched in September 2022, Dads Rock provides open community MLJSIC se55ions for dads and their young
children, which so far has been delivered in partnership wrth Bristol Music Trust, Dads In Mind. Bright Start
Children's Centre. and Hope House. Atross the year Evofve Music delivered 124 Dads Rock sessions engaging
434 dads and yOLFng children.
Ytsulh Music, Stepladder and the Big Lottery Reaehing Communities Programtne have SUPPDrtèd Dads Rock in
2022-2023, and wthin the year funding has been secured from Arts Counryl England to continue and extend this
progratnme further across the Soth West.
Mini Music Makers is a new partnership project with the West of England Music Aliance that looks to build on the
Soulld Explorers approach lo earfy years mu51c practice and ￿11 support educators in North Somerset, Bath and
North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
We successfully delivered ou¥ Big Lottery Rèaching Commun￿"eS (unded AdvénturÈr¥ pilot programme in
partnership with Action for Children in autumn temi 2023. On aftèmate weeks we delivered activities for young
parents in Newton Abbot and Teignbridge. supporting parents aged 25 and under, many of whom have been
through the care system. We will be building on this partnership over ihe next three years through support from
Children in Need and the Devon Community Foundation.
Inclusive Community Music for Young Pèople
Since 2020 we have been delivering indusive community music sesstons for neurodTverse young people in
Radstock, in outreach settings and online. through our Sound Lab prograTnme. Within the year this proje¢t was
kindly supported by the Radcliffe Trusi and The Ashley Family Foun¢Jab"on and in 202&2024 further fvnding has
been secured lo continue these weekty sessions.
In 2023 we have also extended our work with neurodwerse young people to North Somerset through the ￿delIvery
of the Unscripted holiday programme wrth the West of England MU￿CAll$an￿.
Developing the Community Music Sector
For the freelance music leader workfor￿, we have delNered training in traurna-infotrred practic£.' inclusive musi
practice and the benefits of musieal play WTth thildren with soaal, emots.onal and mental hèalth needs. We have also
hosted reflective sessions to allow thosé working in the field to share their practices and challenges.
Evaluation data 2nd report from the Sound ExploTrrs programme have been shared wth the c￿[lIm￿nity music
sector and published online.
All Evolve Music's rates of pay have brought in line with Ihose recommended by the Musiaans Union.
Funders & Fundraising
We are gratefvl to everyone who has pledged support to Ev0￿e Music through the year.
Play it Forward is a new ftjndraising initi*ive that inMtes ehoirs, orchestras. community musical groups and
Ènsembles in the South West to 'donate' one of their coneerts to Evolve Music by making Evolve Music the
designated chanty partner lor the event. This is done through a number of med)anisms. either donating ticket
revenue, pro￿lding an option to donate when purchasing tic*ets, or having digital andlor physical eollection methods
on the night.

Incorne for the year remained at a simi18r level to that of the previous year at £92.005. Around half of this related to
funds restricted to the direct finanong of speafic projects. received from a number of key funders.. The Vemon Ellis
Foundation, The Nation31 Lottery Community Fund, The Ashley Farnity Foundation. Youth Music, The Radcliffè
Trust, Second Step Somerset and Frome Town Council. We also receivèd importanl support from Youth Music
Recharge Fund towaid5 the ftjnding of the charity's core management and operational costs. The Trustees would
like to express their sin￿re gratitude to all the org3nisalions which kindly supported the charity and its work during
the year.
After all direct and indirecl costs, the charty recx)rded a nel 54Jrplus for the year of £7,880, a small improvement on
the prewous year. Restricted fvnds of £23,753 were carried fO￿ard al the year end, with total (2sh resources of
almost £57,000.
Last year the trustees adopted a new reserves policy under whith the charity seeks to maintain a level of
unrestricted rèserves suftiaent to cover be￿een 3 and 6 months of budgeled core operats'ng costs. At the end of
this finanaal year. unrestri¢ted reserves were £28,684. whith rxbveied almost 6 months of core costs budgeted for
the financial year ending 31 MaTch 2024.
The Executive Dirèctor and tnjstees rewew risks to the charity règulatly using a detailed risk register and make
appropriate plans lo mitigate risks.
Plans for future periods
In March 2023. and following consultation with wider stak&holders. Evolve Music's trustees 2dopt@d a new three
year Strategic Plan. This plan was written in the context of the Department of EduGgtion's new National Plan for
Music Education for England {pu￿1$hed October 20221.. a re￿)eW ol the funding and structure of Music Education
Hubs by the Departrnent of EducAtion and Arts Council England., a new cultural policy for England. Lets C￿at0
(Arts Qouncil Englandl.. and, at a local level, shifting local authority trrt)undaries and govemance structures.
The vision of Ev0￿@ Muslc's trustees is that everyone in thé South West has the opportunity to benefit from
participating in CA)mmunity music. To achieve this. the Charity seeks to remove barriers lo corrmunity MLJSIC
participation experienced by underserved communities in the South West, allowng for a greater number of loral
people and communities to benefft from ex)mmunity music eath year. Our four strateg￿C objectives over the next
three years are to..

It is the intention of the trustees to share this plan with key stakeholders. for example as part of an induction process
for new trustees and new rnernber5 of the core workforc£, as well as wrth prospective funders. Piogress towards
achieving the ambitions laid out in the plan wll be monitoied by the trustees through regular ExeGutive Committee
meetings and Board meetings. The plan wll be updated on an annual basis and where necess8ry in response to
significant changès within the intemal or extemal operating enmronmenl.

Structure. govemance and management
Evolve Music is a Charitable Ineorporated Organisation Cci￿) govemed by its constitution dated 4 April 2023. The
tharity was originally registered in January 2017 under an Assoaation Model CIO.. on 4 April 2023. Shortly after the
year end, at an Extraordinary General Meets'ng the members of the tharity voted unanimously to change the
constitution lo a Foundation Model CIO, under its new constitution. adopted on the same dale, the charity is
govemed and overseen solely by its trustees. The charty is registered wth the Charrty Commission, registration
no. 1171391. The Board of Injstees meets quarterly lo review perfom)ance against strategic and finanaal
objectives.

New trustees may be appointed by resolution passed at any property convened trustee meeting, and all new
ttustees are appointed for an initial term of three years. In appointing trustees. the Board of twstees has regard to
the skills, knowledge and èxperiènce needed for effective management of the charity. New trustèes take part in an
induction process. during whid) they receive copies of the d)arty's constitution and Injstee's handbook, are fully
briefed on their obligations under charity and eA)mpany law, 2nd are given inforniation on the deosion-making
processes. the finanoal performanc£ of the charity. and the chaiity's business plan. Trusiees wrth speafic expertise
brief the Board from lime to time on current topi(%_ More broadly. trustees are encAJuraged to keep uTrtO-dale with
developmènts in the sector and to tske advantsge of appropriate training opportunities available from various
bodies.
The Board of trustees appoints and maintains a sUb￿mmittee of tnJsiees, the Exècutivè Committee, which meets
quarterly with the Executive Director prior to each quarterty trustee meeting. The Committee works with the
E)reeutive Director to consider strategic. operational and finanual matters in detail, pro￿ding an enhan￿d level of
support and management for the Executive Director and staff team, recognising the limitations in capacity of that
team. Any decisions or other important matters arising from Executive Commrttee meetings are reported to the
Board of trustees, alongside the Executive Director's report. al the next trustee ffleeting.

1.1 Aecountlng convantion
The financial statements have been prepared in a(￿rdance with the charitys goveming document, the
Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 -The Financial RepoTbng StanilaTd applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland"
I'FRS 102.1 and the Charities SORP 'A￿oUntIng and Reporting by Chartties.. Statement of Recommended
Practice applicable to charitiès preparing their ar￿unts in accordance with the Finanaal Reporting Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland {FRS 1021" (effective 1 January 20191. The charity is a Public
Benèfrt Entity as defined by FRS 102.
The chanty has taken advantsge of the pmmsions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a Statement of
Cash Flows.
The fin3noal statements have departed from the Charities {Accounls and Reports) Regulations 2008 only lo
the extent required to prowde a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Staternent of
Recommended Prai#1￿ for charibes applying FRS 102 rather than the vèrsion of the Statement of
Recommènded Pracb'ce which is referTed to in the RÈgulations but whi(* has since beèn wilhdrawn.
The financial statements are prepared in sterting, whth is the ftjnctional (xjrrency of the charity. Monetary

1.2 Going concern
At the tirne of approwng the financial statements. the tmstees have a reasonable expectats.on that the charity
has adequate resources to conts'nue In operational existenc* for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees
continue to adopt the going cL)ncern basis of accounting in preparing the finan￿al statements.
1.3 Charitsble funds
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the disffttion of the trustee5 in f¥Jrtherance of their tharitable
objectives.
Restricted funds are subject to speafic conditions by donors as to how they may be used. The purposes and
uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the finanoal stalements.
1.4 Income
In¢orlle is recognised when the tharty is legalty entrtled to it after any perfomiance ￿nditionS have been met,
the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.
Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are re￿gnised once the tharity has been notified
of the donation, uriless perforn1an￿ conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in
rel81ion to donations received undeT Grfl Aid 01 deeds of covènant is rÈcognisÈd at the lime of the donation.
Legacies are recognised on rerEipt or otherwse rf the tharity has been notffied of an impending distribution.

1.6 Expenditure
Expenditure is iecognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a
third party. it is probable that a transfer of 8eAjn0m￿ benefits wll be required in settlement. and the amount of
the obligation can be measured Teliably.
Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each actsvity are made up of the lolal of dire(a costs and
shared costs. including support CQ5ts involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single
activity are allocated directly lo that actiwty. Share(I costs which contribute tts tnore than onè acliwty and
support Costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned betwèen those actiwtiÈs on a basis
consistent wrth the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time Spent, and
depreciation charges are allocated on Ihe portion of the assèt's use.
1.6 Tangible fixed assèts
Tangible fixed assets are inthally measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation. net of
depreciation and any impaimient losses.
Depreaation is iÉcognised so as to write off the cost or valuaiion of assets kss their residual values ovèr their
