Structure, governance and management

The charity is constituted as a charitable incorporated organisation (foundation model). It was formed and registered with the Charity Commission on 27 January 2017 (number: 1171348).

New trustees are appointed by the trustees, who keep the composition of the trustee body under review to ensure that it includes sufficient people with the time and expertise needed to manage the charity effectively. The day-to-day management of the charity is delegated by the trustees to Andrew Goode, and he reports back to the trustees on a regular basis. The trustees are directly involved in the activities of the charity as volunteers, and therefore maintain a close knowledge of its work.

Objectives and activities

The objective of the charity is to advance the evangelical Christian faith for the benefit of the public in England and Wales, and in other areas where opportunity arises. This will be achieved mainly by providing opportunities and facilities for members of the public to encounter Christian teaching and hospitality in community events and elsewhere. At such events, we seek to model Christian hospitality and lifestyle, and provide relaxed informal opportunities for visitors to engage with Christian teaching. We provide resources and advice to Christian groups which carry out similar outreach work.

The charity’s main activity is the provision of facilities at agricultural shows, festivals, community days, and other public events. This usually comprises a marquee which is open to all members of the public attending the event, and it makes available a rest area, hot and cold drinks, general and children's activities (where the children remain under their parents' supervision), Christian literature and displays. The purpose of this provision is to provide a hospitable setting with a relaxed and informal presentation of the Christian message. In addition, the equipment owned by the organisation will be used by other charitable and non-profit organisations with similar aims (including public events, youth camps, etc) to help them to fulfil their objectives.

When using our equipment ourselves at an event, some items (eg books) are for sale, either at retail prices or (more often) at a discounted price. However, most of what we provide in terms of activities, refreshments and literature are freely available to all-comers, with a discreet opportunity to put a small contribution into a container if they wish, but without any obligation or expectation for them to do so. Where our equipment is used by another charity or voluntary group, we accept donations as a contribution to our costs; we take into account the other group's ability to pay, and accept small donations where appropriate, in order to allow the use of our equipment to proceed.

The charity’s aim is that its activities should be as widely available as possible, and it does not want access to its equipment and facilities to be restricted by cost. In carrying out activities, the charity trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission in relation to public benefit, and are satisfied that significant public benefit is achieved as a result of these activities.

The activities of the charity depend heavily on the input of people who give freely of their time because of their commitment to the charity’s objectives. The trustees are very grateful to all of their volunteers, without whom the charity could not operate in the way that it does. The trustees also recognise that most of the Christian groups which use Show Jesus equipment rely on volunteers in a similar way, and appreciate the efforts of all who play a part in helping to achieve the shared objectives of Show Jesus and the groups which partner with it.

Achievements and performance

The activity in 2023 had increased to an unprecedented level, because of the opportunity to be involved in some major events which were new to the charity. The activity in 2024 has dropped back to previous levels because some of the major events in 2023 have not recurred, and because of the serious illness of a key member of the team (who has thankfully largely recovered).

Another significant change in 2024 (which has continued in 2025) is that it was decided to suspend the outreach at the Royal Three Counties Show following a review of its cost and effectiveness. Consideration is being given to other opportunities for outreach in that area. The charity’s other regular and longstanding activities have continued largely as in prior years, including the largest single event, which is the outreach at the Royal Welsh Show – the 50[th] anniversary of that outreach is in 2025.

The trustees are conscious that some of the charity’s long-standing workers and supporters have been affected by health issues and other commitments, and are mindful of the need to encourage the involvement of new workers and supporters.

Financial review

The income of the charity arises mainly from (a) contributions from other organisations which use this charity’s equipment; (b) donations from trusts, churches and individuals; and (c) small donations put in collecting boxes at community events by members of the public who wish to make a contribution for hospitality received.

A modest deficit arose in 2024, following a small surplus in 2023. The trustees are satisfied with this position, given the circumstances which arose during 2024, as outlined above. The finances of the charity remain on a sound footing; however, the trustees remain conscious of the charity’s dependence on the generosity of its donors and those who use its equipment.

Restricted funds are made up of donations received specifically for the work carried out by the charity at two major events, the Royal Welsh Show and the Royal Three Counties Show; expenditure relating to these two events is disbursed from these restricted funds. Careful consideration will be given to the use of funds for the Royal Three Counties Show, given the current suspension of that outreach.

The charity’s policy on reserves is that sufficient funds should be retained to ensure that Show Jesus can meet its financial commitments as they fall due, and the trustees are satisfied that this is the case.

Report of the independent examiner to the trustees of Show Jesus (charity number 1171348) in respect of an examination carried out on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2024

I have examined the accounts on page 4, comprising the receipts and payments account for the year ended 31 December 2024 and the statement of assets and liabilities at that date.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and independent examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Charities Act”) and that an independent examination is needed.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act

  4. have not been met; or

  5. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
