The trustees present the annual report and accounts of Show Jesus, a registered charity.

Structure, governance and management
The charity is constituted as a charitable incorporated organisation (foundation model). It was formed and registered with the Charity Commission on 27 January 2017 (number: 1171348).
New trustees are appointed by the trustees, who keep the composition of the trustee body under review to ensure that it includes sufficient people with the time and expertise needed to manage the charity effectively. The day-to-day management of the charity is delegated by the trustees to Andrew Goode, and he reports back to the trustees on a regular basis. The trustees are directly involved in the activities of the charity as volunteers, and therefore maintain a close knowledge of its work.
Objectives and activities
The principal objective of the charity is to advance the evangelical Christian faith for the benefit of the general public in England and Wales, and in other areas where the opportunity arises. This will be achieved mainly, but not exclusively, by helping to provide opportunities and facilities for members of the public to encounter Christian teaching and hospitality in community events and elsewhere. During the events at which we are present, we seek to model Christian hospitality and lifestyle, and provide relaxed and informal opportunities for visitors to engage with Christian teaching. We provide resources and advice to groups with a Christian ethos which wish to carry out similar outreach work.
The charity’s main activity is the provision of facilities at agricultural shows, festivals, community days, and other public events. This usually comprises a marquee which is open to all members of the public attending the event, and it makes available a rest area, hot and cold drinks, general and children's activities (where the children remain under their parents' supervision), Christian literature and displays. The purpose of this provision is to provide a hospitable setting with a relaxed and informal presentation of the Christian message. In addition, the equipment owned by the organisation will be used by other charitable and non-profit organisations with similar aims (including public events, youth camps, etc) to help them to fulfil their objectives.
When using our equipment ourselves at an event, some items (eg books) are for sale, either at retail prices or (more often) at a discounted price. However, most of what we provide in terms of activities, refreshments and literature are freely available to all-comers, with a discreet opportunity to put a small contribution into a box if they wish, but without any obligation or expectation for them to do so. Where our equipment is used by another charity or voluntary group, we accept donations as a contribution to our costs; we take into account the other group's ability to pay, and accept small donations where appropriate, in order to allow the use of our equipment to proceed.

Objectives and activities (continued)
The charity’s aim is that its activities should be as widely available as possible, and it does not want access to its equipment and facilities to be restricted by cost. In carrying out activities, the charity trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission in relation to public benefit, and are satisfied that significant public benefit is achieved as a result of these activities.
The activities of the charity depend heavily on the input of people who give freely of their time because of their commitment to the charity’s objectives. The trustees are very grateful to all of their volunteers, without whom the charity could not operate in the way that it does. The trustees also recognise that most of the Christian groups which use Show Jesus equipment rely on volunteers in a similar way, and appreciate the efforts of all who play a part in helping to achieve the shared objectives of Show Jesus and the groups which partner with it.
Achievements and performance
As was the case in 2020, the activities during 2021 were enormously affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The events supported by the charity start in the spring of each year, and run through most of the remainder of the year. Because of the coronavirus restrictions which commenced in March 2020, and continued in some form through to early 2022, virtually all events at which the charity would usually be present, or its equipment would be used, were cancelled in 2020 and 2021. There was therefore very little opportunity for the charity to carry out its usual activities, but the trustees were looking forward to the resumption of normal activities during 2022.
The attention of the trustees has therefore been focused on maintaining the capacity of the charity, so that it would be able to recommence its work following the cessation of restrictions. In addition, the charity put together a special two-year Covid support programme, for which it received restricted funding from a national charity. The aim of this programme was to provide support for the well-being of the large network of traders and other individuals with whom the charity has come into regular contact over the years through its work at agricultural shows and similar events. Many of those individuals have been very adversely affected, both in financial and mental health terms, by the loss of trading opportunities caused by the widespread cancellation of events. This programme began in 2020 and continued in 2021, and the trustees believe that many individuals were helped by the programme.
Financial review
The income of the charity arises mainly from (a) contributions from other organisations which use this charity’s equipment; (b) donations from trusts, churches and individuals; and (c) small donations put in collecting boxes at community events by members of the public who wish to make a contribution for the hospitality which they have received. The cancellation of events in 2020 and 2021 caused a significant drop in income from most of these sources, and there was also of course a large reduction in event-related expenditure. The trustees are grateful to those supporters who continued to give donations as they were able, and to other charities which also gave generously. As a result, the financial position continued to be satisfactory despite the challenges caused by the pandemic.
The charity’s policy on reserves is that sufficient funds should be retained to ensure that Show Jesus can meet its financial commitments as they fall due.

Note: The charity also owns a stock of equipment, including a large marquee and other items for use in agricultural shows and similar events, and trailers for transporting these items. The equipment is considered to have modest second hand value.

Report of the independent examiner to the trustees of Show Jesus (charity number 1171348) in respect of an examination carried out on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2021
I have examined the accounts on page 4, comprising the receipts and payments account for the year ended 31 December 2021 and the statement of assets and liabilities at that date.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and independent examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Charities Act”) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:

examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention

which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:

to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act

have not been met; or
-
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
