Newark Dementia Carers’ Group was formed in June 2014 by three people whose lives were profoundly affected by caring for loved ones with dementia. They recognized that social isolation has a significant impact on the carers of people with this and similar diseases.

In summary, the charitable purposes of the group are to provide recreational activities and to promote good health. We achieve this through hosting a meeting space twice a week where people can make friends, share their experiences, support each other and have fun. Visiting speakers, entertainers and activity leaders add value to our days together. In addition, we organise day trips and holidays, and bi-weekly sports at the local leisure centre. Membership is open to anyone with first hand experience of dementia.

Our members report increased wellbeing from being a part of the group. Many of them were isolated and stressed before joining, struggling with the physical and emotional aspects of caring or having dementia. Many of our members now have such a good circle of friends that they see each other multiple times a week. This support is invaluable, especially for elderly male carers. Most people continue to attend after the person they have cared for has died or moved into a care home. Facilitating this network has benefits to their families and wider society too.

## **Financial report**

## **Income included:**

- General donations of £3321, mainly from Masons and funeral collections.

- Ring-fenced donations totalling £6000 from the BNA Charity and the Masons. _This year’s large contribution from the Masons was due to the death of a group member who was heavily involved with them._

- Member contributions of £2440 for regular activities and £4289 for trips and holidays. We offered a 100% holiday discount for people with dementia.

## **Outgoings included:**

- £3675 room hire at Balderton Village Centre, for at least 4 hours a week of service delivery.

- £1367 for regular activities of craft, sports, and entertainers.

- Day trips and holidays, including river cruises, a Warners resort break, mystery tour and a pantomime cost £5804. We try to provide trips that appeal to a range of members. Being with the group gives people the confidence to go out.

- £1540 on entertainment including a heavily subsidised Christmas meal.

- Administration and compliance costs of £910. With the vast majority of our members being elderly and less technologically aware we incur significant printing costs.

Our financial position at year end is stable but we anticipate our costs will continue to rise. To keep our services affordable for all we will continue to subsidise our activities. Our next financial year will feature more diverse funding streams.

_The trustees have regard for the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit._

## **Reserves**

We are holding £40,000 in reserves for the development of a day service. Currently, we are unable to provide supervision for people with moderate to severe dementia who are unaccompanied. There is a need for this service locally and it is something we look to develop in the future. This is a long-term aim of the group and will require substantial planning and resourcing.

## **How you can help**

## **Volunteers**

We are always looking for new volunteers who can help at group events or raise money for us.

## **Trustees**

Our trustee board meets monthly to discuss funding, events, welfare issues and develop policy and procedures.

## **Legacies**

Some people choose to include a gift to us in their will.

## **Funeral collections**

Many families, even some who haven’t used our services, donate their funeral collection to us. We are registered for Gift Aid, so can claim a further 25% of UK taxpayer donations.

## **Lottery**

You can join the local community lottery at www.newarkandsherwoodlottery.co.uk and choose to raise money for us.

## **Facebook**

We have a Facebook page and group. We use these to publicise events and other useful information. Liking, commenting on, and sharing our posts increases their visibility.
