whole.|Para 1.20|In July 2024 we presented our most
ambitious festival yet, with more variety of
events than ever before. Whilst still keeping
the great classical repertoire at the core of
our programming we worked hard to entice
new audiences to our concerts. Central to
this was our inviting the superb Argentinian
bandoneon player and composer JP Jofre to
the festival. He writes and performs cutting
edge modern tangos and is an amazing
communicative musician. JP attracted a
new, younger audience to the festival and
our investment in special publicity postcards
for his event really paid off. He was a huge
success.
We also celebrated the 150th anniversary of
the birth of Arnold Schoenberg with a
performance of his seminal work Pierrot
Lunaire. Schoenberg can still be off-putting
to audiences so we made the experience
attractive by surrounding Pierrot Lunaire with
other Pierrot inspired works by popular
composers like Schumann and Debussy, in
more of a ‘cabaret’ style concert.
Our cafe style concert was presented in a
relaxed manner with table seating. Entitled
‘Noche Americana’, a diverse selection of
music from the Americas was presented
alongside Argentinian empanadas and
refreshments, the music featuring everything
from Elliot Carter to Bluegrass!
Our community work grew in size this year
and we performed a whole Haydn
Symphony alongside local amateur
musicians, rehearsed and conducted by
cellist Richard Lester.
We prioritised the work of women
composers this year too, performing works
by Fanny Mendelssohn, Louise Farrenc,
Rebecca Clarke, Helen Grime and Thea
Musgrave, every concert of the festival| containing a piece by a female composer. Audiences remained stable in size and the festival is in a solid position to go ahead to plan future events. |Additional information (optional)
