four days of concerts and a masterclass for
young musicians across four days in July 2023,
celebratng 25 years of bringing chamber music
to this largely rural part of Tynedale in
Northumberland. Joining the Artstc Directors,
the Gould Piano Trio and Robert Plane, were the
largest number of guest musicians the festval
had ever invited, which enabled a huge range of
diverse repertoire. Alongside mainstream pieces
such as Mozart Clarinet Quintet, Oboe Quartet
and Beethoven Septet, many lesser-known
works were presented. Women composers were
well represented, with works by Farrenc, Lili
Boulanger, Anna Meredith, Valerie Coleman and
Sarah Jenkins. Composers of colour were also
central to the programming, with works by
Coleridge Taylor, Coleman and Paquito D’Rivera
prominently included. Repertoire ranged from
the baroque to world premieres, embracing a
wide range of styles in between including
American Song Book works by Gershwin, Cole
Porter and Jerome Kern.
The festval’s ongoing commitment to
supportng young musicians took the form of a
free masterclass for three young fute players
from the North-East with the world-renowned
