The advancement of public education in the arts, in particular the art of chamber music, by the organisation of chamber music festivals in Corbridge in the county of Northumberland.

The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.  A Fund Raising Concert was held in Corbridge in January attracting a good audience including several new to the festival. 

Due to the Corona virus it was not possible to hold the Corbridge Chamber Music Festival as usual but an online festival was organised, advertised and well supported, reaching a larger audience than usual though, unfortunately, this was not reflected in donations.

Section D                      Achievements and performance 

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

Like every other arts organisation in the country, 2020 was a very difficult year for the Corbridge Chamber Music Festival. Having produced all our publicity material ready for distribution before the announcement of the national lockdown in March, we held off making a call regarding the possibility of going ahead with a live Festival until early June 2020. We finally received confirmation that our venue, St. Andrew’s Church, would not be opening for either public events for socially distanced audiences, nor be open to enable live stream from an empty church. We felt a strong desire, indeed obligation, to still provide some kind of event for our supporters and Friends of the festival.  We soon decided on an alternative programme, also delivered over three days, all of which could be recorded in the musicians own homes and delivered online on YouTube, streamed as live, in real time. None of the musicians had any experience of home recording, let alone compiling concerts for visual streaming, and we couldn’t access help because of the restrictions on people entering our homes. Undaunted we set about creating a programme that still reflected elements of the original concert programmes. Luckily the four Artistic Directors of the festival have musical families so we involved spouses, partners and Rob and Lucy’s daughter Flo, a bassoon student at the Royal Academy of Music, in our programming too. Many items translated well to online, even the planned Historical Walk around Corbridge which became a fascinating online event. Our planned Composer-in-Residence, Piers Hellawell, still had work performed and his pre-concert talks were replaced with a lecture about his recorded works and a popular ‘Desert Island Discs’ feature from his lockdown home on the Isle of Harris. Poet Sinead Morrissey narrated her own poetry for us. We even managed to keep elements of our planned dance project with Norwegian Ballet star Kenji Wilkie, who filmed his choreography to our recorded music. We had help from locals in providing footage that helped us still give a feel of being in Corbridge - each concert opened with the chiming of the church bells for example! The Elias Quartet were unable to record for us as two of the members live in mainland Europe and couldn’t travel. However they provided archive footage for us from a concert in Austria. We still managed to hold a Friend’s Reception on Zoom. The producing of the concert videos was a huge challenge for Robert Plane and Lucy Gould but they managed to master iMovie well enough to produce some fine looking events. Streaming on YouTube worked beautifully and in all we had around 2800 views over the three days, far more than our typical physical audience numbers. Donations were collected through CAF and raised enough to pay modest artist fees. Audience feedback was very positive and perhaps the most satisfying aspect of the move online was the fact that many elderly or infirm people who hadn’t been able to come to the festival in years could enjoy it once again. 

We remain optimistic that we will be able to present a live festival in 2021 but have learned how powerful an online presence can be and this is something that will be embraced in 2021 whatever the possibilities or otherwise of live music!

**After the significant deficit last year a concert was given in Corbridge in January when the musicians claimed only expenses.  A Fund Raiser was also employed who accessed grants from several trusts putting us back on a better financial footing.  The musicians involved in the online festival agreed to be paid based on donations given which did not reflect the viewing numbers.  The payments to the musicians did not cover the many hours that had gone into acquiring the skills needed to produce an online festival of the high standard achieved and the trustees were very grateful.**
