Structure, governance and management
Connect For Life is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) foundation registered on 18[th] January 2017 with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
New trustees are appointed by the current trustees in accordance with the governing instrument.
Objectives and activities
The objects of the charity are:
-
a. The relief of those in need, by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage.
-
b. Consistent with and not contrary to object a. :
-
i. To improve the health and wellbeing of socially isolated people in Oswestry and surrounding areas, particularly older people and people with memory difficulties and dementia, who would benefit from social interaction in a safe, stimulating environment.
-
ii. To offer a safe, stimulating environment where older people can make connections with others to improve their wellbeing.
-
iii. To offer support and respite, particularly to carers of people living with life limiting conditions, including the provision of a safe, supportive environment where the person they care for may be looked after for part of a day.

iv. To directly offer specialist information and support to people affected by memory difficulties and dementia and work with other agencies to offer more general information and support.
Public benefit
The charity trustees have complied with the duty in section 4 of the 2006 Charities Act to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers and duties.
Financial review
Total income for the year was £24,582 (2022 - £26,792). All of the charity’s income is sourced from donations by attendees, donors and organisations.
Total expenditure was £19,571 (2022 - £25,481), of which 71% (2022 - 49%) were direct costs of providing the activities.
At the end of the year the charity held unrestricted reserves of £25,116.
As a reserves policy, the charity would like to have enough unrestricted funds to cover three months’ running costs at any given time, which would equate to approximately £4,000.

Transactions with Trustees
No trustees received or waived remuneration, benefits or expenses of any kind during the year.
Trustees’ responsibilities
Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its financial activities for that year. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:
-
a) select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
-
b) make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
c) state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
-
d) prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud or other irregularities.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT
YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2023
I report on the receipt and payments accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2023, which are set out on pages 5 & 6.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
