Our Vision Statement

Swindon Commercial Chaplaincy exists for the benefit of the community we serve. Our work is mostly done on a voluntary basis. We are an ecumenical partnership of chaplains and our aim is to provide chaplaincy to those who work in Swindon, and the surrounding area.

Chaplains seek to:

2023

Despite covid restrictions now having been lifted we are still affected by the consequences of this time. Some chaplains are still not able to start due to personal health/age conditions. Also the financial and social consequences of that time are still emerging and effecting us, particularly in the area of fund raising.

Mrs Sheila Wright Operations Director

I have had a frustrating year of personal and health problems. This led to requesting some time off sick. I have tried to keep my role going all be it intermittently. Chris and I continue with Asda. Sadly the gateway furniture store has closed, due to mainly financial difficulties. The forging connections group has not moved forward. Anna the lady largely responsible for leading forging connections project has been seriously ill. Due to financial constraints Sheila has agreed to remain in her role, but only receive a nominal payment each month.

Chaplaincy

Numbers of chaplains has decreased this year. Revd Jacqui, and Chris and now Adrian continue to offer prayer at our meetings Marion felt that her time as secretary had come to an end, and Chris’s husband Adrian agreed to hold this role in the short term at least. Our treasurer Julie Pobjoy has also retired on health grounds and this role has kindly be taken up by Keith Tredget

There have been small amounts made at fund raising events, we have had a donation from the URC Church. As a visiting chaplain as we have noted before its hard to quantify the effect your visit has had. We have to trust that God goes before us. I think more than ever before this year we have heard difficult stories of the struggles financially for small businesses to continue, particularly in Swindon town centre. The bigger stores seem to be shedding a number of staff but expecting remaining staff to keep all the work done, this has led to an increase in mental health issues being shared and a general despondency amongst staff. We listen, sympathise, offer prayer.

Chaplains

Sheila : Old Town small shops, Orbital Shopping Centre, prospect Hospice in Wroughton, Gateway Furniture Project,(now closed)+ Operations Director. Clive : Greenbridge Retail Park. Sally Brunel Centre. and prospect Hospice for the latter part of the period. Janet : Old Town Co-op, newsagent Newport Street, and Brunel Centre. Jacqui : Havelock Street and Market Street shops. Chris : Orbital Shopping Centre. Brenda Y : Gorse Hill shops and the Open Door project.

Goals for 2023/2024

1 Recruit new chaplains and expand the area within Swindon that we are able to cover with the chaplaincy.

2 Continue to apply for grants and donations to keep the charity in a secure financial position. 3 Continue with other fundraising activities.

4 Continue to support other areas in raising chaplaincies.
