Para 1.17 | To act as a resource for young people up to the age of 25 living in Oxfordshire by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of: (a) advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals; (b) advancing education; (c) relieving unemployment; (d) providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons. |

Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
Groups of approximately 12 Young People aged 14-21 meet weekly during term time with two adult leaders. They undertake a structured and challenging programme of personal development and fundraising. They are motivated by the opportunity to travel to Western Kenya as a group of volunteers for 10 days, helping orphans in the Nasio Trust schools and family homes who are even less fortunate than themselves. On their return the programme may continue with support for education, employment and ambassadorial work for YoCO. |
| The weekly programme includes: • Education: eg staying safe online, how to stay safe with alcohol and drugs, how to work as a team. • Fun activities: eg learning to cook curry! • Preparing for the challenge of volunteering in Kenya: eg a team building residential weekend at Youlbury Scout Camp. Learning some Swahili and a song to sing in Church in Kenya • Volunteering activities: eg sorting 500 school uniforms for Nasio. Fund raising: each young person has to raise money towards their volunteering work in Kenya. eg a tombola stall at the Abingdon Fun in the Park. |

Para 1.38 | Group sessions are run by volunteers. In 2020 the volunteer hours are significantly lower than usual as for much of the year it wasn’t possible to meet face to face |
| Other | In 2020 our work was seriously affected by the Covid 19 Pandemic. In March face to face meetings had to cease and it became impossible to start new groups. For the active groups (including young people from previous groups) the charity ran positive, fun weekly on line sessions to include activities as well as some parts of the on-going programme. |
Group leaders arranged one to one walk and talk sessions with young people who were struggling with the lockdowns.
Achievements and Performance
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | 2020 was a challenging year. YoCO’s main achievement was, therefore, to safely continue group meetings both face to face where possible (often in outside spaces) and online using Zoom. The feedback from young people and their parents was that this was a life-line for them. Plans to launch two more groups were made and funding sourced to fully support one of them. 2020 lockdown was also seen as an opportunity for the charity to review its work and emerge from lockdown ready to implement new plans. A new trustee was recruited with much needed experience of comms/ social media, two paid, part-time roles of Youth Group Manager and Operations Manager were created and excellent candidates were appointed. The ‘Walk and Talk’ programme of mentoring individual, vulnerable young people was established with appropriate safeguarding and proved to be essential work during lockdown and beyond. This became an established part of the YoCO provision. Training and development of the volunteer youth group leaders was established and this has had a significant impact on their performance and influence in their own community. The young people were supported to volunteer in their own community eg to deliver food from local foodbanks, to engage with those who were housebound, to run a stall in a local market which people really enjoyed. In 2020 YoCO researched the possibility of delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and became a registered centre ready to offer the opportunity to all young people on the programme in the future. Two groups travelled to Kenya in February 2020 but one group was unable to travel im July due to Covid restrictions and plan to travel in 2022. |

where relevant about: |
|---|---|---|
| Achievements against objectives set |
Para 1.41 | Objectives had to be rethought with the restrictions of Covid but, with close regard to safety, the achievements met these objectives and in some cases exceeded |
| them. This was especially true with the opportunity to review the charity’s provision for vulnerable young people and develop it further for a post lockdown launch. |
||
|---|---|---|
| Performance of fundraising activities against objectives set |
Para 1.41 | The main annual fundraising event was very successfully moved on-line. It reached a much wider audience and raised almost four times its previous total. Local grant giving bodies remained supportive throughout the pandemic: local councils especially valued the engagement with vulnerable young people. The objectives of the charity were limited by COVID so the fundraising met objectives set. |
