## The Alfred Fagon Award Limited Report of the Trustees For the year ended 30 June 2022

The Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements for the charitable company for the year ended 30 June 2022. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and aims**

Our charity's purpose as set out in the objects contained in the company’s memorandum of association are to:

- To promote, maintain, improve and advance education and the encouragement of the arts in particular by the recognition and promotion of plays by British writers of Caribbean and African descent in the art of drama.

- To run an annual playwriting competition open to Black British playwrights of Caribbean and African descent living in the UK and to award a prize for Best New Play of the Year to the winning playwright.

- To award the annual Roland Rees Bursary to a recipient as decided by the Trustees. The bursary, up to £3,000 is awarded annually to enable a playwright to devote more time to their writing.

- To actively seek out partnerships to help and support writers.

## **Ensuring our work delivers our aims**

We review our aims, objectives, and activities each year. This review looks at what we achieved, the outcomes and success of our work in the previous 12 months.

The review also helps us ensure our aim, objectives and activities remained focused on our stated purposes. In particular, the directors consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set.

The trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, including the guidance 'public benefit: running a charity (PB2)'.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Alfred Fagon Award**

2021 was the 25th anniversary of the Award. The last national lockdown ended in July 2021 and so the annual award ceremony was able to go ahead on Friday, 3rd December 2021.

The award was won by Mojisola Adebayo for their play Family Ties. They were presented with their award by our patron Baroness Floella Benjamin.

## **Roland Rees Bursary**

The trustees awarded the bursary to Diana Nneka Atuona.

## **Mustapha Matura Award and Mentoring Programme**

From a shortlist of four writers the winner was chosen. Chakira Alin was awarded her prize by Ingrid Selberg, wife of the late Mustapha Matura. Chakira is 21 years old and at the time of winning was in her second year at Queens' College, Cambridge University, studying English Literature.

Playwright, Roy Williams OBE FRSL, is mentoring Chakira between January 2021 - September 2022. Roy is an award-winning playwright (Alfred Fagon Award, George Devine Award, Evening Standard). He also writes for Radio and TV. Feedback will be sought from the mentor and mentee once the mentoring programme has been completed to evaluate the programme and take the learnings into next programme.

## The Alfred Fagon Award Limited Report of the Trustees Continued For the year ended 30 June 2022

Two readers additional readers were employed to reading and writing reports on the entries for the prize, rather than allocating the work to the readers for the Alfred Fagon Award. We are thankful that we have been able to support more Black British readers with work during the difficult times for the theatre industry during the ongoing pandemic.

## **25th Anniversary**

## **25 Black Champions of Theatre**

For our 25th anniversary, the Alfred Fagon Award Board felt this would be a great occasion not only to celebrate writers, but to turn the spotlight on 25 roles which don't normally take centre-stage. This project, a special magazine print and digital, to celebrate our anniversary was suggested by trustee, Brian Walters.

The behind the scenes roles that contribute to the ecosystem of the theatre industry, whether that be casting directors, drama teachers, sound designers or volunteer coordinators, each of these 25 play a vital part in the growth and sustainability of theatre, as well as being role models to a generation following behind them.

Nominations forms were sent to over 300 theatres, arts centres and theatre organizations in the UK asking for nominations and through a combination of nominations and suggestions from the sub-committee working on the project (Brian Walters, Mimi Findlay and Pauline Walker) 25 Black theatre practitioners were selected to recognise their talent, dedication, drive and collaborative spirit.

Award-winning, Black British photographer, Myah Jeffers, was engaged to take the photographs and a magazine produced which was sent to theatres in the UK, our funders, Arts Council England, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Black MP's, the Black Cultural Archives and the media. A digital copy of the magazine is on our website.

This additional activity resulted in greater awareness of the work of the Alfred Fagon Award with more people attending the awards, engagement on our social media from the Champions which in turn increased our followers. The MP, Dawn Butler, followed us on Twitter. Elaine Grant, one of the Champions, was asked by SOLT (Society of London Theatres) to give a talk to their members and Concord Theatricals who donated £5k to the project.

## **Past winners publication**

A publication featuring past winners of Best New Play of the Year, Roland Rees Bursary recipients, Audience Award and Outstanding Contribution to Writing was created celebrating past winners. The publication was distributed to guests at the ceremony, the media, Department of Culture Media and Sport, Arts Council England and funders, past and present. Income was earned from selling three adverts in the publication.

## **In Conversation With**

This is a fundraiser and was one our 25th anniversary projects. It was due to take place at Hampstead Theatre on 21st November 2021. However, it was cancelled due to unforeseen maintenance having to take place in the venue. The event has now been re-scheduled for Sunday, 22nd October 2022 at Bush Theatre and will feature Yvonne Brewster OBE and Lynette Linton, Artistic Director of Bush Theatre. The event will be livestreamed and filmed for distribution. The project is funded by the Black Funding Network.

## **National Theatre**

We deepened our partnership with the National Theatre. They offered us the use of a larger venue, Lyttelton Theatre for our 25th anniversary. This was fitting as over 110 people attended the ceremony which included recognition for the 25 Black Champions of Theatre.

The NT also filmed the award ceremony for the first time for our archive and is for internal use only as the ceremony uses the set in place and we do not have the rights to make public the stage design without the consent of the National Theatre.

The National Theatre has included the 25 Black Champions on their invitation list to press nights.

The Alfred Fagon Award Limited Report of the Trustees Continued For the year ended 30 June 2022

## **The future, Coronavirus (COVID-19) and cost of living**

The theatre industry was still affected by the global pandemic caused by Coronavirus. The UK Government ended the final lockdown in July 2021. Many industries and sectors of the economy were at risk of survival and this continues to be the case post-lockdown as easing and ending of restrictions happened at different times throughout the four countries of the UK. Government support for some sectors and freelance workers with furloughing and the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme finished in October 2021. The theatre industry is slowly recovering but was severely damaged by the lockdowns and some theatres closed or made staff redundant.

The country is currently experiencing a cost of living crisis with record levels of inflation. This is attributed to the war in Ukraine and unprecedented energy prices which are affecting people's livelihoods, particularly those at the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder. Food poverty and fuel poverty, in particular, is predicted to lead millions into debt. A recession is predicted in 2023 if inflation continues to rise, leading to the loss of jobs. As inequality widens this may stop Black British writers entering or staying within the theatre industry as more secure income is sought.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

For the Alfred Fagon Award we currently receive regular funding from The Peggy Ramsay Foundation.

The Roland Rees Bursary is supported by the Roland Rees Estate.

Funding for the Mustapha Matura Award and Mentoring Programme has been raised from individual donors, Ingrid Selberg, The Henry Kent Trust and The Garrick Charitable Trust. The grant from the Garrick Charitable Trust is £4,500 over three years. The second tranche of the grant was received in April 2022.

The grant from The Peggy Ramsay Foundation was received in August 2021. The donation from the Roland Rees Estate was received September 2021.

Funding was also raised from Black Network via The Funding Network for the In Conversation With project. The final tranche of that funding was received in August 2021.

Concord Theatricals (Concord Music) donated £5,000 towards the 25 Black Champions of Theatre project and the funding was received in July 2021.

Trustee Sheelagh Killeen Rees, very kindly donated £500 towards the cost of the winner's publication.

The Fagon family donation continues to be allocated to the payment of the readers at £500 per reader per annum as this enables modest reserves to build up from other funding.

The Alfred Fagon Award was registered as a charity at Charity Commission on 6th January 2017. The board is formulating a fundraising strategy to raise additional funds to support the Awards. We are registered for gift aid and claimed gift aid on the donations received from the Roland Rees Estate. Gift aid has been claimed on donations from individual donors during the current financial year.

The Trustees (who are also directors of The Alfred Fagon Award for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees' report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). Company law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law the Trustees must not approve the financial statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period.

In preparing these financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in operation.

## The Alfred Fagon Award Limited Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees For the year ended 30 June 2022

I report on the accounts of the charitable company for the year ended 30 June 2022, which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Statement of Financial Position and the related notes.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is required.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under Section 145 of the 2011 Act;

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charitable company and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements:

- to keep accounting records in accordance with 386 and 387 of the Companies Act 2006; and

- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of section 394 and 395 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities

have not been met, or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
