Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

## **Cornish Heritage in Penzance**

Bewnans Kernow’s primary work during 2021-22 was on preparations to open 'Cornish Heritage in Penzance', a new venue to share, celebrate and research Cornish history and culture which will be established in the former Penzance public library building.

At the start of the financial year Bewnans Kernow was engaged in rounding off the National Lottery Heritage Fund Recovery Fund project (for a grant of £46,800) and the follow-up activities. Our key aims in delivering this project were to:

- increase the resilience of Bewnans Kernow, especially in the face of the covid situation,

- increase our capacity to develop a venue in Penzance which will celebrate, share, research and develop Cornish history, culture and heritage

- lay the foundations and purchase core equipment for the centre

- ● accelerate the sustainability of the centre.

The result was that the majority of the groundwork for launching the new venture was put in place.

Further unexpected restoration work needed at the building, which is now listed, and a series of lock-downs due to the pandemic resulted in a delay to moving into the venue. The Business Plan for the new venue continued to be developed as did policies and other matters of governance.

## **Representation on other organisations**

Bewnans Kernow continues to be involved with heritage and Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities work at a strategic level and is represented on the Cornwall Council Heritage Kernow Board and on the Cornwall Council National Minority Working Group Forum. At a local level it is represented on the Madron History Group Committee.

## **Summary**

In summary, Bewnans Kernow encountered a delay in launching 'Cornish Heritge in Penzance' because of the additional building work needed. This impacted on our charity's work and on income generation. Despite this, our preparations to launch the new heritage venue in Penzance continued with the result that we are now in a stronger position once the restoration work on the building is finalised.

**Section E Financial review**

Financial review: **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** At the start of the financial year, Bewnans Kernow had a cash balance of £23,171 brought forward. During the year, the organisation received the final instalment of a restricted grant for the Cornish History and Culture Centre in Penzance amounting to £4,680 and a grant of £5,000 for the Hands on Heritage project. Payments totalling £4,572 were made during the year and cash balances at the year-end were £28,279 of which £20,248 were restricted funds. Level of reserves: The trustees have considered the reserves of the charity. The longerterm policy is to aim to hold unrestricted reserves amounting to 6-months of anticipated expenditure. The Trustees consider that the balance on 5[th] April 2022 is sufficient to help sustain the operations of the charity over the following year.

**Details of any funds materially in deficit**
