Dr Peter Meek weg elected as our Chalr of th• Board, allowlng me to focus more on the
oppratlonal aspacts of DAR and my role as CEO.
The N8tk)n•lltl•s and Borders Act, passed In 2022, and the Illegal Mlgratlon Act in July 2023 have
cast a shadow ovtrthe Unlversal Declaratlon of Human Rlght5. We are wltne551ng the repeTcusslons
of dovis￿ sound bltes and thetorlc, lèadln8 to Incrèased dlvlslon and hate crime In our communltl¢s.
Dèsplte these challenges, we conslderourselvesfortunateto stlll be able to weleome and eonne¢t
wlth people from around the world who have faced $58nlflc8nt hardshlp$ and had to leave their
homes.
Throutsut the year, there ha5 been 8 ¥rowln8 Interest among our sanctuary seekers to en8¥8e In
Volutiteer WO￿ with us, brln8lng a fresh dynamlc tD our operatlon$. Thls refiètts th• outstandlni

prolonged and challengln8 waltlng period marked by uncertalnty and anxlety. Recelvln8 dttlslons
from the Home offi￿ Inltlates a flurry of paperwork and more, dependlng on the nature of the
det151on. Our mentor5 work Incredlbly hard throuohout thls process, guidlng ond supporting our
asvlum seekers. The Impact ourmentDrs have on the Ilves of asvlum se•kets and retu￿e$l5 hard to
measure so I wlll let the asylum seekers Say It.
