Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
To advance the education of children aged 3-5 years for the public benefit, initially in Pasarichenai near Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka and expanding to other regions in Sri Lanka by supporting the facilitation of preschools and resources to provide education
Summary of the main activities undertaken for After the 2004 tsunami funds were raised to repair and provide the public benefit in resources to Al Ishraq school affected by the tsunami in relation to these objects Pasarichenai, Arugam Bay. Supplies were bought and buildings (include within this repaired. section the statutory declaration that trustees The Araliya Education Foundation (AEF) was set up as a small have had regard to the charity in November 2010 with the aim of advancing the guidance issued by the education of pupils at this school, providing and assisting in the Charity Commission on provision of facilities for education at the school and supporting public benefit) and developing the teaching of English in the school. Pre-school education was absent in the school even though children aged 3-5 came to school each day. Due to lack of government funding and despite offers from AEF there was no teacher for the young children. In January 2014 an independent preschool was opened in Pasarichenai with a properly trained teacher fully funded by AEF. The school was housed in a disused building built by the Norwegian government after the tsunami but never used. The building was provided by the local mosque in exchange for its restoration and running costs. Between 20 – 28 children attended the school and on-going professional development was provided for the teacher each year by AEF.
In January 2017 the school closed as the mosque wanted the school building back and despite best efforts AEF was not able to find a suitable alternative in the immediate area. In January 2017 AEF became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The charity wanted to expand its work with developing and supporting preschools beyond Arugam Bay in other areas in the country.
During this time AEF was introduced to the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka through the Sparkes Home Charity. AEF visited several preschools on the east coast of Sri Lanka in the summer of 2017 that were run by the Methodist church and needed funding. However, none was a suitable candidate for AEF funding. Finally, AEF were introduced to a day care centre and preschool for children in Angulana, south of Colombo. The enterprise is overseen by the Methodist church and funded by various charities. AEF now provides specific support for the preschool there.
The trustees maintain close contact with the Methodist Church both at the local and national level to ensure the school is well financed and run. There are currently 35 children who attend

The Trustees of AEF meet regularly to review the activities of the charity and their obligations in respect of public benefit. The Trustees have complied with the duty in Section 4 of the Charities Act 2006 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.
Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)
The Trustees have agreed with the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka to provide funds that go toward the running of the preschool in Angulana.
Grants for additional projects will be reviewed and agreed by the Trustees as they arise.

All the activities of the charity are conducted on a voluntary basis. The trustees like to visit Sri Lanka each year but have been unable to do so since 2020 due to the pandemic. They will visit as soon as safely possible to review the school and discuss future plans with the Head of the Children’s Desk of the Methodist Church.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
In the summer of 2017 AEF developed a relationship with the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka through the Sparkes Home charity with a view to working in conjunction with them to access preschools in need of funding. A primary consideration of this contact was to have someone based permanently in Sri Lanka to monitor schools that AEF might support and to make sure they were running smoothly and efficiently.
As a result, AEF now supports, along with some other charities, the preschool at the Day Care centre at Angulana. Here the younger children, who go to the day care centre each day, attend preschool in the mornings whilst the older children attend the local school.
The preschool needed further funding last year as Help Orphans Now, Australia, had withdrawn their funding from this project. AEF agreed to extend the financial support they were providing.
Close contact is maintained with the Colombo based central headquarters of the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka, in particular the head of the Children’s Desk who is very involved and usually accompanies Trustees on visits.
