Likkle Swimmers Objective

==> picture [106 x 109] intentionally omitted <==

Likkle Swimmers is created for the public benefit of a rural community on the south coast of Jamaica called Treasure Beach by providing free swimming lessons to children.

The purpose of Likkle Swimmers is to provide access to a local swimming pool for children where they will be taught from a program designed specifically for their age group. The children will not only learn a skill that will save lives, but in doing so will also improve their self-confidence and independence, thereby benefiting the wider community. The program is being extended to accommodate adults when demand exists.

Trustee Statement

2023 was a year of change for the Likkle Swimmers team. All of the local pool staff and swimming teachers undertook professional, international qualifications.

Two STA (Swim Teachers Association) tutors; Adam Knight and Camilla Golledge (me) flew to Jamaica to deliver the International Award for swimming teaching. Alongside this were a group of teenagers who qualified for the pool helpers certificate, many of them having already been through the programme themselves.

It was a week of really hard work for all involved. The teachers and pool helpers were engaged, enthused and exhausted!

It was brilliant to see the teacher’s progress throughout the week, putting their new found knowledge and skills into practice at the pool. There were many light bulb moments and watching the transformation was nothing short of incredible. I was so proud to be a part of it.

We also trained over 12 of the staff in lifesaving and first aid skills, skills that some of them are now passing on to the local community through CPR workshops.

The impact Likkle swimmers had on the community in 2023 was a true testament to all the hard work of Charlotte Holt, the founder. When we visited local venues, food places and hotels, everyone knew who Likkle Swimmers are and were eager to hear more about the programme. This time, we were able to tell them that the programme is now far more sustainable due to the staff having formal skills and qualifications, meaning they feel valued and that we as a charity have put time and effort into progressing them to be the very best they can be.

2023 was also the year of some new partnerships with Soul cap and Budgie smugglers as well as the continuing support from Robert&Sons Beachwear. All of them have fully supported the charity by sending free swim caps, hats and swimwear to our swimming families and teachers in Jamaica.

The year flew by with some notable monetary donations for future pool improvements, a cohort of fully qualified swimming teachers and pool helpers and strengthened links with the whole community.

Financial Review

1st January 2023 to 31st December 2023

Opening cash balance

Expenditure

The opening cash balances as at 1st January 2023 stood at £22,301.22. At the end of the financial year 2023 Likkle Swimmers held surplus cash of £59,419.21 spread across 3 separate Lloyds Bank Accounts and one WISE £ account split as follows:

Treasurers Current Account - £1,461.52 Instant Access Account - £7,008.63 32 DAY TERM Account - £50,827.13

WISE £ Account - £121.93

These funds were carried forward into the next reporting period and will form the basis for funding the 2024 Swim Campaign.

We aim to hold a minimum of £500.00 in INSTANT access accounts with any surplus funds to be held on interest bearing deposit with our current bankers.

In 2023 we had a net surplus income versus expenditure of £36,959.27, however this would have been a net expenditure of -£1,870.73 had it not been for a generous donation from a previous supporter of Likkle Swimmers.

Income

Our expenditure increased by £10,000 with local staff wages increasing in line with the cost of living and to prevent them being out of kilter with the local community. We also took on 2 part time administrators and covered the flights & accommodation for the 2 STA instructors for the Easter training. However, they received no remuneration. Freight shipping and customs fees were also a major cost in 2023. The other major spend related to public liability, fund raising expenses as well as various other items such as printing, finance charges and website fees which are all considered within the normal course of business for the charity. In summary the charity remains in good health but we will not be complacent as we look to secure and sustain the future of the program. To this extent we will be targeting a cost neutral position again in 2024 and will seek further funding opportunities through our partnership with PCMF and by encouraging local involvement through sponsorship and donations. As we go to print Hurricane Beryl in summer 2024 has damaged the pool area so we are likely to be required to allocate some of our private donation to repairs.

2023 was a normalised year having delivered a full summer program over 8 weeks, plus an Easter training program to upskill our local teachers and aquatic helpers. The aim was to continue our target of becoming more locally sustainable and to this extent we increased our local presence by taking on 2 part time administrators.

Our main sources of income came from the direct relationship with the Princess of Monaco Foundation (PCMF) as we reduced our partner interaction with Swim Tayka. Two volunteers joined us in the early part of the program bringing another dynamic and experience for our local teachers. They did provide a cost neutral asset to Likkle Swimmers, but moving forward we will consider the impact of utilising these as a considerable amount of time is required to administer their visit.

Other funds were raised through the sponsor the teacher initiative and pool banner which engaged some of the local businesses and shifted our reliance on UK based fund raising. Private donations as well as corporate donations also contributed significantly, alongside a local retreat visitor donations scheme.

Although the charity suffered a net out going, this would have been reduced by over 50% as 2024 costs were paid up-front in 2023. We were very close to achieving our cost neutral target and given the large private foundation donation, we finished in the black for the first time.

CEO Vision

Dear Friends,

We have a truly incredible year in 2023, and we were able to achieve some really amazing things. Having found our feet again after covid with the summer of 2022, we were excited to grow Likkle Swimmers even more.

It was lovely to be able to welcome back lots of children that had swum with us before, as well as some new faces.

In April, I was able to fly out to Jamaica, but this time with three very skilled and enthusiastic individuals all with a mission to help Likkle Swimmers. They were Camilla, Adam and Matt.

Matt also came with us on the trip, and he was able to take lots of video footage of the community and interviewed some key people who work with or have been positively affected by Likkle Swimmers. He created a documentary to showcase the work that we do, and it was amazing to hear what everyone had to say, and the difference that we are making.

Camilla and Adam flew out, and achieved something absolutely amazing by training up our local teachers with an international swim teaching qualification. The teachers worked incredibly hard during the week, and did lots of theory work as well as putting their new skills and knowledge to test in the pool. It required a lot of their time, commitment and hard work, with a few of them being illiterate so this really was a challenge in many ways for them all. They all passed with flying colours, and for some of them was the biggest achievement and qualification they have ever received. It was a really big deal for Likkle Swimmers!

April 2023 really is a trip that will never be forgotten, because during such a short period of time, we made such a difference!

In the summer, we were able to host volunteers again, and this time had just two of them. They were so lovely, and provided some really great tips and tricks to the teachers to help them with lessons. We had such great feedback from them both about how special the community was, and how much they enjoyed having the experience.

During this time, Camilla and Adam also carried out lifeguard training with most of our staff, including the pool assistants who work in the summer. They learnt both on land, and in the water skills which will also be transferable to their everyday jobs, and they will be able to pass knowledge onto others.

During the summer, we taught nearly 500 children, of all different ages, and the program was incredibly successful. Like last year, we had a really high percentage of new swimmers join us, which always means that we are reaching more people than before.

Whilst we were out there, we were able to run a small program, which included lots of different ages and stages so that the teachers could practice their new skills, and run lessons by themselves in order to pass the course.

I look forward to seeing what 2024 will bring!
