## **Likkle Swimmers Objective**

**Likkle Swimmers is created for the public benefit of a rural community on the south coast of Jamaica called Treasure Beach by providing free swimming lessons to children.**

The purpose of Likkle Swimmers is to provide access to a local swimming pool for children where they will be taught from a program designed specifically for their age group. The children will not only learn a skill that will save lives, but in doing so will also improve their self-confidence and independence, thereby benefiting the wider community. The program is being extended to accommodate adults when demand exists.

## **Trustee Statement**

It was very satisfying that the work we put in to maintain Likkle Swimmers during the Covid years paid off in 2022. Relationships with our team of Jamaican swimming teachers and other staff were sustained, and their dedication to the charity’s goals is as strong as ever. We also feel that our relationship with the wider Treasure Beach community has deepened: we didn’t lose touch with them, even when it was impossible to put on a full programme of events. And in 2022 we were very much back in action, teaching over 300 children and even starting a programme for very young kids. Word had spread, and children are coming from further and further afield to benefit from our lessons.

Our relationships with the wider world were enhanced too. Though our collaboration with Swim Tayka, we were able to supplement the Jamaican teaching staff with three very capable volunteers from the UK. We were also delighted to receive a grant from The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, which shares our primary goal of drowning prevention.

In summary, we feel that Likkle Swimmers has become an established charity; we have a genuinely talented and dedicated team in Jamaica; our work is well-known and appreciated by the local community; we are able to benefit from relationships with other organisations who respect what we have achieved and we look forward to maintaining progress in the years ahead.

## **Financial Review**

## _1st January 2021 to 31st December 2022_

## **Opening cash balance**

## **Expenditure**

The opening cash balances as at 1st January 2022 stood at £26.828.77.

At the end of the financial year 2022 Likkle Swimmers held surplus cash of £22,301.22 spread across 3 separate Lloyds Bank Accounts split as follows:

- Treasurers Current Account - £10,160.17

- Instant Access Account - £10.78

- 32 DAY TERM Account - £12,130.27

These funds were carried forward into the next reporting period and will form the basis for the 2023 funding.

We aim to hold a minimum of £500.00 in INSTANT access accounts with any surplus funds to be held on interest bearing deposit with our current bankers.

## **Income**

Our expenditure was marginally more than 2021 by approximately £1,500 with local teacher & driver wages being the main outgoing for 2022 versus the changing room completion costs in the previous year.

The other major spend related to public liability, fundraising expenses as well as various other items such as printing, finance charges, travel, accommodation and website fees which are all considered within the normal course of business for the charity.

In summary the charity remains in good health but we will not be complacent as we look to secure and sustain the future of the program. To this extent we will be targeting a cost neutral position again in 2023 and will seek further funding opportunities through our partnership with PCMF and by encouraging local involvement through sponsorship and donations.

In 2022 we had a net expenditure versus income of £4,527.55.

2022 was more normalized after having delivered a full summer program following the 2021 Covid restrictions.

Our main sources of income came from a new relationship with the Princess of Monaco Foundation (PCMF) introduced via the Swim Tayka partnership. 3 volunteers joined us via Swim Tayka bringing another dynamic and experience for our local teachers. On the whole they proved to be cost neutral with a small cash benefit to Likkle Swimmers.

Other funds were raised through the new sponsor a teacher initiative which engaged some of the local businesses and shifted our reliance on UK based fund raising.

Private and corporate donations also contributed significantly alongside the charity golf day which was the only major fund-raising activity in year.

Although the charity suffered a net out going, this would have been reduced by 50% if the balance of the PCMF funding was received in year as opposed to 2023. Hence, we had been targeting cost neutral for 2022 but finished approximately £2,000 off target.

Major income components can be seen below:

- Private Donations - £2,701.03

- Golf Day - £1,970.00

- Teacher Sponsorship - £2,691.74

- Swim Tayka (PCMF) Volunteer Contribution - £4,649.60

- Corporate Donations - £640.00

## **CEO Vision**

## **Dear Friends,**

_2022, what a great year! After Covid hitting in 2020, stopping our plans for a summer program, and then in 2021 only being able to do 4 weeks, it really was great to be back up and running again in 2022 reaching so many children. Over the summer we managed to teach over 300 children in 2022._

It was a big year for us as we have been working with Swim Tayka and it was the first year that we were able to host the volunteers through their program. We had 3 volunteers that joined us in August for 3 weeks, and it felt amazing to be able to share what we have created, as well as our local teachers learning a lot from some experienced swim teachers, so it worked out well for both of us. We love expanding Likkle Swimmers and every year we reach more and more people providing them with the opportunity to experience the amazing community of Treasure Beach.

In April, we were able to run a small program during the Easter holidays, which included baby lessons for the first time. We held classes for a few 1- and 2-year-olds as a trial which proved to be well received. They were so tiny, and parents were so trusting to let them join in, but we hope by taking away the fear of the water from such a young age they will learn to feel comfortable around the water much quicker.

Our volunteers were also able to help our Jamaican teachers with their confidence for baby lessons, and held many lessons on a Saturday for children even as young as 5 months old. The community were very quick to sign up for these as there were limited spaces. We hope in the future that our teachers will be able to do more of these once they feel more confident as it is very different to teaching older children.

We’ve made lots of new connections this year with both local and UK businesses, as well as projects around the world that also support water safety initiatives in line with our own. Drowning prevention is so important to us, and also to the Princess of Monaco Foundation, which is why they have been kind enough to offer us a grant which will help to make a big difference. The Jamaican teachers have all worked so hard to make this program happen, and I am so proud of the teachers that they have become. They show incredible leadership as well as kindness and enthusiasm throughout all of the lessons. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them, and they work so hard to make the program work. I am really excited to see how they progress as teachers even further in the future.

We also had a really high percentage of new swimmers this year, which is amazing as means we are reaching people from further away, some travelling nearly an hour for swim lessons. Likkle Swimmers has always been proud to be able to provide employment to the local community, which includes our drivers as well as our teachers, and we are also very proud to offer free lessons to anybody interested. I hope that in 2023 Likkle Swimmers will continue to grow thanks to all the support we are given.
