Charity Information

Likkle Swimmers was created for the public benefit of a rural community on the south coast of Jamaica called Treasure Beach. Its purpose is to provide free swimming lessons to children aged 4+, and recently adults. Likkle Swimmers successfully completed its first 3 month programme in June 2017- September 2017 teaching a total of 87 children to swim. In 2018, Likkle Swimmers was open and available to children for 6 months and within that time a 183 children were taught which included children from the local nursery and secondary school. In 2019, 150 children and adults were taught over a 2 month period. We truly hope that hope in 2021 we can continue to build our programme and increase these numbers even more.

Likkle Swimmers Objective

Likkle Swimmers has been created for the public benefit of a rural community on the south coast of Jamaica, Treasure Beach who provide free swimming lessons to all children.

The purpose of Likkle Swimmers is to provide access to a local swimming pool for children where they will be taught from a programme designed specifically for their age group. The children will not only learn a skill that will save lives, but in doing so they will also improve their self-confidence and independence, thereby benefiting the whole community.

Trustee Statement

The Covid pandemic had a big impact on us, just as it did with any charity that operates overseas. We were unable to travel, and swimming lessons were simply not possible for a long period of time.

We decided to make the best of this unwelcome situation, and took the opportunity to invest in the long term future of Likkle Swimmers by commissioning a new building which would encompass changing rooms as well as a storage on the site of the teaching pool.

There were many benefits to this. Firstly, by investing in a permanent structure, we were making a statement to the community we serve; we were telling the children and their parents that, despite the temporary setback of the pandemic, our commitment to Treasure Beach remains strong. This message won’t have been missed by our excellent team of Jamaican swimming teachers, their commitment to Likkle Swimmers is really important to us.

Secondly, we were taking advantage of the lock down to carry out work that desperately needed doing, but was more practical to execute when the pool wasn’t being used.

Finally, we were spending money in Jamaica and making a contribution to the local economy, which largely depends on tourism, which suffered greatly when the flow of tourists dried up.

We believe this investment will pay dividends when swimming lessons properly resume. The pool area is far more attractive and the changing facilities are far more appropriate, particularly for the girls. There is also now a space where parents can comfortably watch their children while they learn, and the teachers will have a better working environment too.

Although we may have been prevented from teaching the children to swim, we have invested in our facilities so that more children will be able to be taught in the future, in a far more attractive and welcoming environment. We are certainly looking forward to making full use of our new facilities!

Financial Review

1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020

Opening cash balance

The opening cash balances as at 1st January 2020 stood at £73,442.92. At the end of the financial year 2020 Likkle Swimmers held surplus cash of £42,343.61 spread across 3 separate Lloyds Bank accounts split as follows:

These funds were carried forward into the next reporting period and will form the basis for funding the 2021 Swim Campaign.

We aim to hold a minimum of £500.00 in INSTANT access accounts with any surplus funds to be held on interest bearing deposit with our current bankers.

Income

Our main sources of income were dramatically reduced in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic which significantly reduced our corporate funding as well as other fund raising activities. Smaller personal donations were the main contributor and we were fortunate to be buffered by previous years donations. This enabled us to undertake the initial financing of the Changing Room facilities at the Sports Park in Treasure Beach alongside the public swimming pool that Likkle Swimmers utilises.

The breakdown of the major income components can be seen below although total income equaled £3,961.71 of which £3.499.03 is attributed to refunds:

Expenditure

Our expenditure was considerably more than 2019 despite no swim programme being delivered as a result of Covid-19 in 2020. Consequently, we took the opportunity to re-line and perform necessary maintenance on the swimming pool costing £3,700.00.

As mentioned above we started the build on the changing room facilities which will provide a safe place for students to change in going forward and is estimated to cost in the region of £28,000 although £20,322.21 has been spent in the 2020 financial year.

The other major expenditure was on items for the aborted 2020 swim programme which were shipped prior to the pandemic in anticipation of the programme going ahead. This also resulted in extra broker fees in order to clear customs as travel was restricted. There are various other items such as postponed flights, accommodation and public liability insurance that have been refunded or credited back.

In summary the charity remains in good financial health but further funding opportunities need to be considered in coming years to remain stable and able to deliver the life skill of swimming.

Dear Friends,

After our successful 2019 swim programme where we took part in the local triathlon in April in the village, and then ran a long summer programme, we hoped that 2020 would be even bigger and better...

The changing rooms will contain both a boys and girls separate changing facility together with a family changing facility, plus a store room.

In 2020, we had planned to head out in April to complete the registration and set up before running our 6-week summer programme teaching lots of children and adults to swim, whilst making good use of the outdoor pool.

They will also have two outdoor showers available to use. There will be pictures to decorate the changing rooms that show past students and Likkle Swimmers lessons so as to encourage the children to join.

When Covid hit, we postponed our April trip which unfortunately had a knock-on effect, meaning the summer trip was also cancelled.

Essentially travel restrictions meant flights from the UK being stopped, and when combined with children in Jamaica not going to school, it didn’t feel it was right or even possible to be teaching swimming.

We plan to teach another 6-week programme in 2021, and to be able to use the changing rooms for the first time.

We hope that we will be able to train a local Jamaican girl to be part of the team, as well as training up another teacher and therefore providing further employment opportunities within the community in 2021.

We wanted to make sure we were still doing positive things in the community, and keeping in touch whilst the pandemic continued, so we decided to build some changing rooms next to the pool.

It was a disappointing and tough year but we are totally committed to being back again soon as we are able and helping save lives by teaching this valuable skill in order to prevent further drowning incidents.

These changing rooms mean that children and their families can change and shower in private, and have space to store their belongings out of the rain whilst swimming. They are so needed in the community and will help to make our swim programme a better one.

* At the time of writing, Covid-19 has again disrupted our 2021 plans and will therefore result in a restricted swim programme.

I love what the Likkle Swimmers programme is all about because it helps our younger generation so that they will be able to help themselves and others if they find themselves in that position.

In today’s life, most little kids are afraid or the water to swim, that’s why I truly admire what the Likkle Swimmers Club is doing, they help kids conquer fear whilst having fun at the same time.

Section B Disclosure

Only complete if the examiner needs to highlight matters of concern (see CC32, Independent examination of charity accounts: directions and guidance for examiners).

Give here brief details of
any items that the
examiner wishes to
disclose.
1) It is acknowledged that in the Jamaican environment that cash
payments are made to Life Guards and local Swim Teachers. Financial
records are maintained regarding these cash payments and are
translated into equivalent sterling at the prevailing exchange rate
2) The international Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the
activities of the Charity in the financial year. Its main activity of swim
teaching has been significantly curtailed and this has resulted in much
lower Teacher and Life Guard wages of £450 in financial year 2020
(compared to £5,058 financial year 2019). It has also resulted in £3,499
of refunds mainly regarding flights cancelled and not used
3) The Charity decided to spend some of its funds on building a purpose
built Changing Rooms with shower facilities on the site adjacent to the
swimming pool. This financial year £20,322 has been spent with a
further £8,000 budgeted in financial year 2021 to complete – a total cost
of circa £28,000. Given the long term nature of the investment this
expenditure has been classified in the Accounts Submission as “B4
Assets retained for the charities own use” (see Section B: Statement of
assets and liabilities at the end of the period).
4) An issue has been raised with the Trustees regarding the ‘ownership’ of
the Changing Room asset regarding for example: security of on-going
use by the Charity, responsibility for insurance of the asset and
responsibility for on-going maintenance. The ‘ownership’ issue has
been raised by the Trustees with the Treasure Beach Foundation
BREDS who own the site on which the Changing Rooms have been
built. At the time of the submission of these accounts discussions are
continuing.
