TEAM RECTOR'S REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020
The last two years hav8 been ch8llenglng in many respects. Bringing together three parishes Into one is
Complicated enough but dolng so wslhin the conloxt of a global pandetnlc Is even more so. As a parish we are
graloful lo 811 those who have ensured that w8 hav8 b8en able to open despite the reslricllons and lo those who
were able to ensure Ihore was the capacity for online worship when we could nol open. Wve managed to
celebrate both Christmas and Easter lagainll irj a dllleignl Wily, but 1119se have been succ8ssfLJI and Included a
wonderful online Lent course and a seiies of short daily videos featumg members of the ctsngregations. Despito
the challenges we have made hugè progress and l am gra19ful lo the Bhurchwarden5 and the new PCC lor their
tirejess work across the parish and including Galoombe whi(* is in pluiallty wlth us.
The PCC have ensured that we rem8in foeused on mission and rninislry and Ihal have a clear direction ol
travel as we build up the staff tèam. l am grateful lo Hannah, St8V8, Getntna, Ernma, Maggl& and now Tamsin
who havg worked Incredibly hard. We are lortunate in havin9 a strong team of Lay Readers and we also thank
Elhne. Rich&rd, and StevB for their part in produon9 and dellvering worship serV￿e$ for us. Wg still hav8 on0
t8am vicar vacancy, and the PCC is currently praying and discemlng lh¢ next slops with that role.
I have always said that my vislon for our chu¥ch was that we would be like the early church In the weeks
fnllowing Pentecost as described in Acts Chapter 2.. 4347

were togelh&r and had all things ccimmon,- they woulcl sell Ihèir poss8ssions and g(￿d& and distrpbute Ihe

A church which was is so loving, dynamlc, inclusive. and allradive that people couldn't halp but be drawn to it.

the EGcle51aslical Parish of Sl Johns, Newport and also the Parochial Church Councll of the Eccl8slastlcal
Parlsh of St Mary thg Virgin, Carisbrook8 to form th8 new singlè Parish.
As the Ngwport Minster chaI41y Is also règlslered as a charity, these accounts reflect the continuance of that
charity wlth th& mèrger of Churches with effect from 2 June 2020.

A kèy thrust ckf the work ol the Trustees has b88n lo sBek fvnds to repair and renovate Ihè Minster Church to
equip il for the next century under Ihe ovgrarching aitll of a cotnrnunily project that serves an Island wide
commur)ity. A grant from lh8 National H81itag6 Lottery Fund has enabled iniltal work lo be ¢ompleled arml the
Parish is seeking funding to conllnue the development. The merged parish ol Sl Johns has been fundralslng
to redevelop the church and cotntnunity hÉill, dnd Sl Marys, Carisbrooke has been raising funds to restore the
fabric of that churth.
These restoration proleol is fTealed as reslricted funds In these ftnancial statements.
The Parish has bèen affected by the COVID-19 pandemlc, faciliti&s and service5 wer8 unable to carry on In
Ihg pgriod. allhovgh some were carried out virtually. The Parish has 18k8n advantago of Government funding
under the Coronavlrus Job Retention Scherne and gr8nis w6ra recelved to support the ongoing work of tho
Parlsh.
Th8 Portsmuth Di0￿Se is overseeing a schorne of pastoral reorganlsatlon with effect from 2nd Juno 2020,
where existing staffing have b8gn sgcured wth grant fundlng In 2021 and the promise of further supporL

The first lockdown started on 23rd Msrch 2020 and the Mln8t8r was closed followlng C of E guldellnss. The
life of the Minster conlinu8d via zoom & on Sunday 17th May, Kevin took his linal servlce vla zoom, whlch was
followed by diinks & chat onlinE. COV￿ pievenled any leavlng do sadly, bul Kevln and Hllda did manage Irtr
come to a service, as things eased durfng the summer 2nd their leaving gifts presented to them.
On 2 June 2020, the n8w paiish and t88m minlstry of Nwport & CÈrlsbrotrke wllh Gateombe, came in to
being & th8 18St wardens and P.C.C. of Newporl Minster stood down. In June 20 we were jolned by our new
curate Hannah, and She tuok up residence Iii the empty vlcarage. Hannali was ordalned in Portsmouth
Gathedral on Saturday 26th June 2021 and the followng day held her 1st service In th8 Minster whtsn th&
Bishop of Stepney preached.
On the 5th of July last year, il was announced that the Ven. Peter Leonard, Archdeacon ol the 1.O.W. was Ic)
beeome the interim Reclor of Ihe new parish. That position 15 now perrllanenl. Wh8n al Christmas 2020 th818
was a flve-day opening how strange to se8 th8 Pri88t ar￿ congr8gation al Midnlght Mass in masks. socS8lly
di51anced & with no slnging of ¢arolsl After Christmas we weTe agaÉn in lockdown and our Sunday Eucharlst
went on zoom, until Sunday 18th Aprll when soclally dlstanced 5ervlces restarted. On Friday 9th April we
heard the sad news of the death of Ihe Duke of Edlnburgh and a SOCAally distanced memorial Servi￿ was
hastlly arranged by our Rector Peter. The Lord Lleulenanl, High Sheriff and many rngmbgrs of island
organisations were in attendancg. I would like lo thank our Director of Music Steve Parker & choir for
arranging the rnusic al such short notlC8. I would 95so Ilka to thank Stev6 for hls'Hymns at th& Plano request
h¢Trur duThng lockdown whlch was appreciated by so many. On Monday the 12th of April. the Mlnsler was agaln
r00pened for socially distanced piivate prayei.
On 12th April '21 a granl from Historic England allowed Ihg wesl face of the Minster to be scaffolded & ston8
repair work began. They also mRnaged to repair rnany of th8 IDOSe floor Itles. Feral pigeons be part of
God's creallon. bul Ih8ir dropping8 are toxic and damaging. A brokèn south w811 window allowed them Ingress
& egress, bul a tgrnpor8ry window repair has now been made.
Following a prob5em wllh the organ, Dawd Seott called in Andr8w Coop8r who found wat8T In th8 Tromba
Rank pipes. The piping has b88n cov8red to pr8Vonl lurth6r damage. A local contractor. John Nleholson have
put In a quole to erect s¢affold 2nd Secu￿ and repla￿ slates1£6,og6.00 Inc.vatl. Work will start as soon as
Ih&ir schedule allDWS. Followlftg recent dlfflcullles securing the south door, on Thursday 1st May it was found
to be unslable. 11 has been locked until our architect Invesligalgs. Llke w8rs. the pandemic has hasleNed

Hannah organised and sel up a Zoom Tea @ 3 hosted by Harry, Jane. Flora, Rachel and Liz. It was a chalty
tea party which all who att8nd8d 8nloy6d.
Graham has glven us an update on Ihe East Window. The repalrs lo Ihe main East window and olh9r
windDWS with ¢ra¢ked panes can proceed thanks to th8 Church family donations and th8 PCC d8CiSton to
suspend our Parish Share payment. The lerg¢ East Window was retlloved by Soulhern Ligh15 lor 8 eotnplele
rebulld at their workshop. The option wa5 explored of replacing the 4 stllaller lin width) side east windows
with double glazed mel81 fratned units. Thi5 woukl save In the reglon of £20,DOO. Wlth the help ol the
ArchEt8ct. a planning 8pplleation was made following consulialion with the DAC building development officgr8
who suggested a granl appllcation. However. Ihg Grading of our Church fell outside Ihgse requirgmglll$ so
was not pursued. At the end 012020, this application was still ￿th IOW Planning, but final approval w8S
granted in the Spring of 2021, and a faculty applicstlon Is boln9 mad6.

Brfnglng Worshlp lo our Community dLtring the pandemi¢ was our priority learning new ways ol dolng things.
All 4 Churches made considerable contributions enabling recordings in each Church. A weekly email letter
from a different rn8rnb9r of the Cl8r9y and Reader5 Bach week plus inforrnalion on Services was organis8d
arml compiled by Ethne and di8(rlbuted by the Admln Tearn. Thanks to Calhy and Llz, who 8180 does the pew
news.
Jo and the choir recorded music in their own homes and Josh pleced il all together. We are extremely lucky io
have so many glfted people in our Conqraqalion.
We thank Jo for all she has ¢Jone during th8 tockdowns.
A Christtllas Carol SeTVtce was recorded by mambars of all 4 Ghurches whleh w8$ well receSved on Facebook
and tha Wabslte.
During Advent we had a series of short reflections daily and we wer8 able lo hcld in-person Servkes al
Mldnighl and Christmas Day both S9rvices Live streamed.
Easter was also mad8 very speual with many of th8 rn8tnb8rs from all 4 Churth8s recording short daily
rgfl8olion8 during Lgnl 'Who1 My Faith Means to me, and The Ststions of the Cross which aired on Good
Friday. We thank everyone who contributed.
An enormous thank you to Elhne, Pete, and Simon. having Ihe ability to make all ol Ihe above happen and
conlinulng lo do so live streaming all our Services, with the assistance of Lucy and Rachet.
We thank John for continuing lo pSay the cwgan. many titnes being recoid8d during lockdowns and now in
p8rson at our In-person S8Nlcas. Wo also thank H8118m for hls support onllne and in pèrson.

The process of comtng together as one P8rish is continuing, many times via ZoDrn but now live tneetlng5.
St8V8 Sutcliff8 has bèen appointed as a T68m Vicar wlth Pasioral oversight al St Mary's and lead In the P8rlsh
for Baptisms. Weddings and Funerals. We also took forward to the arrival of Emma as Team Vicar wlh
pastoral OVErsight uf Sl. JLihn's ar)d lead in the Parish with chlldren, young p80ple, families aT)d schools

We can report that th8 church Is In good order. The Quinquenn¢al Report was completed in November 2Q119
and pres8nt8d lo thF) PCC in early 2020. The report indicated that'lhe church Is obviously well ca￿d for

In Jtsnè 2020 am8rgancy repalrs were requlred following the falling ol coping stones from the south elevation
roof of the church. The remaining copSng stones werg pinned and new replacomonl stones were mado and
fitted. Damaged tiles were replaced. The central va118y was cleared Dt) veg8t8tion. Thes8 works wer
completed al a cost of £7596. In Oclobgr 2020 il wa$ no¢oss8ry lo do ropairs to the roof 8r&a In tho Lady
Chapel followlng slorm damage. Thi5 wa5 completed at a cost of £1331.
We are very grateful to the Friends of Carisbrooke Church who havè pald for all these repalrs wlthout thls
support the repalrs would have been difficult to complete.
Due to COVID restrictions the church has b88n risk assossod and only certain pews are in use. The kncelets

Deanery Synod Roport
There were two lormal meellngs of the Deanery Synod during 2020, h81d on th8 4th of F8bruary, arKI th8 18th
of November. In addition, there was an Irllportanl Inform81 meeting on the 26th of July. focus5ing on a single
ag&nda ilgm, the future of ministry on the Isle Df Wighl. By that Ilme. the Impact of COVID-19 on Ihe finances
of the di0￿se were already becoming clear. and the meeting was an opportunity for an open discussion about
the challèngès that were faced, and how these might be addressed.
The February rneeting off8r8d an updat8 on th8 Island Mslon. and Cheryl Vaughan spoke about the work of
demenlla groups In tho Cowes area. The November meeting was focussed on the new Deanery Plan. and
what ideas should be preSe￿Ied tD the leadershlp team in the Dio¢ese. There was a great deal of discussion
as tD whBlher grouplngs ol parishes in hubs could be loose structures or needed to be in a rnore formal
arrangement.
Particular thank5 arè due lo Graham Salter as Lay Chair, and Amanda Collinson as Area Dean for their
leadership, and upbeat approach, as well as for the huge amount of work that Ih9y put into the work of the
Dganery lit suEh a difficult year. Sally Rivliri Tetired as the Archd8acon and Area 08an's PA at the of the
year, and thanks are also dug lo her for all hgr work, supporting th6 work of the synod ovor 5 yèars.

The P8rish Churth CoEEncil has to balance ils gèneral fund. whllsl meetlng the Parfsh Share to the Dlocese.
In re￿￿L years the PCC has opereted with an annual deficit, albeit now much reduced. In addition the
r8storation project grant conditions required resgTves lo bg used in part funding gf Ihg project. Th8 PCC
therefore got inlo a deficit pcksilion with th8 Parish Share lo the Diocese. which the PCC intends to reduce.
Further on merqer of the PaFishes of St Johns. Nèwport, and Sl Marys Carisbrooke, the comblned parish
has 18ken on in¢rgas¢d indebtedness lo the Diocese. The parigh Share arrears do ml constllule a
contractual obligation, and therefore are not included as a liability in these acwunts_
Al the time of approving the financial siaternents. thg trustees have a reasonable expeciation that thB
Parish ha8 adequate re50urce8 to continue in operatlonal exlstence for the foreseeable future. Thus th
trust88s continu8 to adopt thè golng concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.
