Chairman Report 1st February 2023 to 2nd February 2024
Ollies Heroes is an independent Charity that supports children under the age of 16 who have been diagnosed with a cancer in the East of England.
The current Board of Trustees have been in position for just over 8 years now The Charity has found a settled place in the local community. We have had our annual discussion about our positions and all are not only happy to remain in place but feel we feel the experience we all have will help guide us out of the pandemic and enable us to continue the vital work we do in supporting families. The board have established an organised charity in terms of operation and financially we are organised and in a strong position. We believe we have a very strong Board of Trustees in place which each operate to their own strengths.

Post COVID-19 we have been able to resume our normal fundraising activities, although everyone is experiencing financial hardship we have been extremely fortunate in our fundraising. We were again able to hold our annual cake sale which is our biggest fundraising event of the year, along with our grand raffle, which we are lucky enough to continue to be supported by Potters Leisure resorts. For this we cant thank them enough. We also were able to continue in partnership with another Charity Topcats able to host our summer ball which as always was a hugely popular night. Frustratingly we haven’t been able to include the funds raised on the night in the accounts as we were waiting for them to be released from Topcats accounts. We also received some amazing support from our local community, hosting events.
Our costs are usually minimal however this year we have reported zero costs We are fortunate to be supported by some wonderful local business’s who have helped cover costs such as printing. The poor fund raising during covid finally caught up with us in March when we had to make the difficult decision to advise our partners that we weren’t able to accept any more referrals until we had raised some more Funds, this meant we weren’t able to support any families through to September where we felt we were in a stable enough position to start offering grants again. This was in part down to a large donation made by Ollies Nan on what would have been his 18[th] Birthday. To further protect the charities ability to continue we took the further decision to reduce our grants slightly to £250. Despite this turmoil we still finished the year with an impressive 46 grants being made. Which brings the total number of families supported to an incredible 233.
As the chairman and Ollies Dad I am incredibly proud how despite the difficult circumstances with COVID and then this year struggling with finances we have continued to make such a large impact on the families support. We are eternally greatful for all the support offered to us and really can’t thank everyone enough. Despite the amount of support we have received, We need to continue looking at alternative revenue streams in order to keep us functioning and supporting as many families in need as possible
We still aim to turn around applications within a week (normally within 2 days)
We are particularly proud of our local community and there ongoing support Ollies Heroes is a well known charity and much respected which means the world to us.
Regards
Jamie Gray (Chairman)
