## **– Make a Diference Schools Mombasa Chair’s Report for Year Ending March 2021**

## Rainbow Unit

This has been a challenging year in many ways, not least because the Covid 19 situation has meant that no visits could be made to Kenya during the building of the unit, our main focus for the year. Nothing daunted, after planning permissions had been granted in June, work began on the foundations in July and appeared to be proceeding well until September when there was a falling out between the builder, George Opiyo.Ouma and Susan Oloo, the deputy head. At a distance it was difficult to understand the rights and wrongs, but changes to the original plan seemed to contribute to the problem. The effect was that the builder abandoned the site.

Unable to go out to Kenya himself, our treasurer contacted Mr. Jasvinder Oberoi, a local business man whom he had met on previous visits, to see whether he could help to sort things out. Not only was he able to arrange new builders, but also donations and discounts from suppliers to support the project, so that the building was finished by the end of January 2021 and an opening ceremony held on the 27[th] February.

Funds are still required for outfitting some of the classrooms and our usual fund-raising activities have been curtailed by Covid rules, but, with the help of other team members, Caroline was able to attend fairs at Milton Keynes for sale of her denim goods and has since set up an on-line shop for the same. We hope that more opportunities will arise in the year to come. In the meantime, our thanks go to all who continue to support us through donations and/or Easyfundraising.

We are now awaiting the appointment of the teaching staff before providing any more funds for equipment.

## - Start up Programme

With the focus on the building programme, there have been no new business initiatives this year. We have ideas for the future but need to rebuild our funds before these can be realised.

## Noah’s Ark Academy

Three children receive continued support for their education. The latest school reports suggest that they are all performing in the upper quartile of their respective classes.

We are grateful to a former committee member for arranging payment.

reasons were
