Objectives of the Charitable Trust
The objects of the Charity are to promote the permanent preservation of the church buildings and grounds of St Peter’s Walton on the Hill Surrey.
Review of activities
I am pleased to report that this has been another satisfactory year for Friends . To us, ‘satisfactory’ means that we have helped to maintain the fabric of the church and meet the commitment that we have made, whereby we look after the churchyard. In addition to these two important items, ‘satisfactory’ also includes adding to the reserves, ready for a major repair job on the roof or part of the tower collapsing. With this year’s surplus of £15,000, we have been able to increase this reserve to £71,500.
Our two social events, the Barbershop Quartet and the Wine Tasting, were very enjoyable and made a useful contribution to our overall income although, as we have always said, these events our primarily for hearts and minds purposes, rather than pure fund-raising purposes. That also

goes for our Posh Bottle stall at The Pageant. All these events are to do with spreading the Friends word and trying to broaden the base of Friends .
In this latter respect, we paid for a Royal Mail mail shot, covering the KT20 7 post code with every household receiving one of our leaflets, encouraging the recipients to join us. This initiative was deemed to have been a great success, producing nine new Friends paying by Standing Order and two making one off donations.
We now have about 90 Friends which is great, but we still represent only a tiny percentage of Walton’s population.
If you continue to think that preserving the church building and its surrounding churchyard for future generations to enjoy is a worthwhile cause, do please try and convince your best friend into joining Friends. You could also tell your friend that one of the reasons why his property is so valuable is because he lives in this pretty village on the outskirts of London with its pond and its lovely church overlooking the village green and these assets should be paid for by the community…..not just 90 of us. That should clinch it!
May I take this opportunity to thank my fellow trustees for all they have contributed throughout the year and to Andrew Brown who continues to look after our books so impeccably and for Peter Renshaw for examining these accounts. Finally, and most importantly, a huge thank you to you all for your on-going support of Friends . We could not do it without you - You really have made a difference!
Financial performance
The Trustees consider that the financial performance for the year was satisfactory. The assets of the Charity are held in a bank deposit account, pending the award of grants to St Peter’s.

Independent examiner’s report
To the Trustees of the Friends of St Peter’s Walton on the Hill Surrey
I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 December 2023, which are set out on pages three and four.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act), and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect:
-
accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with the accounting records.
I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
