Staunton Harold Sailability Trust 2023 AGM

Chair’s Report

My summary for 2022 would be that the Trust yet again had another good year despite the challenges of low water levels and early season date changes. We have increased the number of assets owned year on year with the purchase of scooby and scrappy. We have also disposed of two older Association challengers and taken ownership of the two modern challengers from the Association at no cost.

The feedback from parents and carers has been positive and we continue to attract return and new visitors, the majority through word of mouth. Id like us to contact more orhganisations this year just to make them aware of our services.

I still believe we are in a strong position after the pandemic years than we were before which is due to the comibined efforts of trustees, volunteers and participants. We do though I think need to get back to doing more on shore activities, and upping the focus on sailing and probably blowing our own trumpet a bit more.

Our volunteers continue to be our greatest asset and where our future growth and success lays and we should look at ways of keeping them engaged and energised. We have again recruited new volunteers in 2022 and lost a few but we should need to continue to grow that number and upskill existing volunteers in 2023.

Our bosun team are regularly meeting and doing good works on our boats and equipment, they help keep eveythng in good working order and also spreads the workload.

Our relationship with the Sailing club remains good and we work closely with the training school on shared resources. We need to continue showing how we coexist with the club and the mutual benefits available from this relationship, the access to Sailaibility memberships and the supporter membership and I’d encourage all our non-member volunteers and regular parents to take up again in 2023.

We do still have a social media presence thanks to Lisa and a website that is being developed all the time, we revamped the look and feel of the website to make it more modern looking and easier to navigate and are going to make more changes for 2023. Id like us to look at maybe more video content with interviews with participants volunteers etc talking about what they get pout of these sessions.

We have not benefitted from funding this year (but we did make mney from selling the streaker) other than Lemon and Lime Interiors who have again donated £500 to the trust

instead of buying presents in the office. This money is going to be used to offer free sessions for 2023 to help families as they face the cost of living crisis, we have sasid that if families wish to dontate of course they still can.

We need to continue with our efforts to raise funds to cover our operating costs which are about £2k annually but to also be able to repair as necessary our equipment but also for future purchases such as the custom built seats that will be delivered this year.

Mowability funded our insurance renewal this year and we are operating it again in 2023 but will be seeking help with keeping up woth the cutting schedule.

I would also like to see us develop our training aspect so more people can achieve more independent sailing as we are well equipped to do so, we also need to push on and develop our powerability offering in line with the RYA scheme which we have discussed but not managed to move on yet 2023 will be the year.

2022 saw us operating the fun side of our offering under the Water Rats name which did create some interest with regulars enthusiasm and created more interest as we promoted the brand.

I would like to record formally my thanks to all my fellow trustees, friends, family, and volunteers who continue to support the trust in its aims, we all know without this support none of this would have been possible.

Despite all the challenges of 2022 I believe we remain amongst the leading forward looking sailability organisations in being able to offer sessions safely and get those who benefit most out taking exercise and enjoying the great outdoors something that we should all be very proud of.

Committee Meetings

We have conducted all our meetings at per the CIO document and have all been recorded and distributed to the trustees.

General:

During the 2022 year we have successfully run 7 Sailability sessions (2 with barbecues) and we have seen 7 new families which was good. Over the 7 sessions 195 children & adults attended.

2 via friends who attend Sailability

3 via the internet

1 via social media (Facebook)

We have recruited 9 new volunteers mainly recruited via Mark and the Powerboat courses.

We had to cancel 3 sessions due to the lower water levels and we did not run the Annual Achievement evening due to low numbers signing up, it would be great to run this again in 2023.

The sessions were in general very well supported but we do experience a number of no shows and this can be challenging when arranging the right amount of volunteers, getting boats ready etc..

We arranged a spring working party and combined our winter one with a session but in 2023 we need to revert to a separate session to ensure we complete all our key tasks before the end of the year.

Mowability funded our insurance renewal this year and we are operating it again in 2023 but will be seeking help with keeping up with the cutting schedule.

I would like to thank Mark for his on-going drive and commitment as we wouldn’t have the last session of the year if it hadn’t been for the adaption to the pontoon to allow us back with a adapted session. It was also lovely to receive another £500 donation from Lime & Lemon Interiors which we will use to fund the sessions this year and support families during the cost of living crisis (families can still donate if they afford to).

We have a good social media scene, but I am aware I need to do more this year to promote us further. Rory Harden continues to do a great job on our website & it was great to see the upgrade last year.

We will have challenges in 2023 in delivering more funding & we will continue to look to increase our numbers of both participants and volunteers. We need to see where else we can advertise Sailability and ensure we are connected to all local support groups.

I would like to record formally my thanks to all my fellow trustees, friends, family and volunteers who continue to support the trust in its aims, we all know without this support none of this would have been possible.

I would also call out the support we have received from the Sailing Club to work with us in delivering our aims.
