Staunton Harold Sailability Trust

2021 AGM

Chair’s Report

My summary for 2020 would be that the Trust has overall had another terrific year despite the challenges of National Lockdown and covid-19, we have increased the number of assets owned year on year, we have had great publicity and feedback from various places including the RYA, our numbers of participants has not increased overall nor session on session but was good considering the limitations of our offering this year. The feedback from parents and carers has been positive and we continue to attract return and new visitors.

Our volunteers continue to be our greatest asset and where our future growth and success lays. We have recruited new volunteers in 2020 and we should aim to continue to grow that number and upskill existing volunteers in 2021 with vigour. We have lost the services of David and Janet Raines which will be a sad loss to the trust and we should record our gratitude for their support over a long period of time.

The Trustees as a group have been very supportive and have made significant contributions. One of the trustees are stepped down Richard Tivey completed his term in 2020, to date he has not been replaced, we have two vacancies currently however I would look to fill these gaps in 2021 once the intentions of the remaining trustees is known. I would like to record my thanks to Richard for his service, support and contribution.

Our relationship with the Sailing club is very good all previous difficulties and sensitivities put to bed. I remain keen to continue showing how we coexist with the club and the mutual benefits from this relationship, the access to Sailaibility memberships and them actively sailing is a big step forward and the supporter membership which a number of people took up and I’d encourage all our non-member volunteers and regular parents to take up again in 2021.

During the 2020 year we had planned 10 sessions and actually ran 5 sailability sessions

The sessions were in general were well supported and the social distancing measures and precautions allowed us to continue albeit in a reduced fashion. From this it has become clear that we can involve parents and carers more in helping at sessions and being more self sufficient reducing the burden on volunteers, with training on hoists etc we can further advance this.

The annual achievement evening not taking place was a massive disappointment, not being able to be with all our families enjoying the celebration of achievements, However we plan to continue to hold this event annually and will look t do something to welcome in the new season if we can .

We do still have a thriving social media scene thanks to Lisa and a website that is being developed all the time, we are looking at revamping the look and feel of the website to make it more modern looking and easier to navigate.

We have not grown our off-water activities and resources giving more for attendees to do between waterborne activity, we will revisit this for 2021.

We have benefitted from funding from The Rotary club 2019 Santa run, private donations, RYA foundation grants and the Masons. More recently Lemon and Lime Interiors from Melbourne donated £500 to the trust instead of buying presents in the office. This money is to be used to fund memberships to encourage participation on a more regular basis. We are in discussion with them sponsoring a fundraising event in the summer or to coincide with the achievement evening.

We now have superb facilities including the new pontoon arrangement, the one area we can do more is in car parking I have asked the club to look at creating some hard surfaced designated disabled parking bays in the car park.

For 2021 we need to continue to recruit more volunteers to enable more sessions to be undertaken and support given to those who may join the club but require help with the equipment set up etc. We need to continue with our efforts to raise funds to cover our operating costs which are about £2k annually but to also be able to repair as necessary our equipment but also for future purchases of big items such as a wheelchair friendly powerboat.

In 2021 carried over from last year I would also like to see us develop our training aspect so those with sponsored membership can achieve more independent sailing are well equipped to do so, we also need to push on and develop our powerability offering in line with the RYA scheme which we have discussed but not managed to move on yet.

I am hoping that 2021 carried over from 2020 will see us break into more adult provision leading to a more regular sailability core taking to the water in club events, I am actively publicising the availability of memberships including boat use.

I would like to record formally my thanks to all my fellow trustees, friends, family, and volunteers who continue to support the trust in its aims, we all know without this support none of this would have been possible.

Despite all the challenges of 2020 I believe we have been amongst the leading sailability organisations in being able to offer sessions safely and get those who benefit most out taking exercise and enjoying themselves away from lockdown, something that we should all be very proud of.

General:

Well no one could have foreseen the year we were going to have due to covid-19. Thank to Mark’s hard work we were able to get back on the water in July with new restrictions in place, but it was fair to say a lot of families were glad to get out and enjoy some normality.

During the 2020 year we have successfully run 4 Sailability sessions and we have seen 4 new families. We have recruited 1 new volunteer in Clive Wood who is now our official photographer. 5 Sessions were cancelled due to covid-19 and 1 Session was cancelled due to high winds.

The sessions were in general well supported but we did find a number of people did not turn up and didn’t let us know either. Following the first session we did decide to push the start time back to 9:30am as we found we needed more time to prepare with the covid-19 restrictions.

Unfortunately, it was not viable to hold our annual achievement evening, but we do hope in 2021 that we can celebrate our successes but again this may be a different format, we will have to wait and see.

We arranged a spring working party in 2020, this was attended by a few volunteers, this was to set us up for the season ahead, little did we know a few weeks later we would be in the first lockdown.

We couldn’t have any of our own fundraising activities which would normally hold but we did receive 2 generous donations from Richard & Jackie Tivey and Di Hooper.

Di did set us up on Amazon Smile & Easy Fundraising and we need to keep publicising this.

We also received some fantastic donations from the Rotary Club 2019 Santa Run, RYA Foundation & the Masons again I would like thank Mark for his on-going drive and commitment as we wouldn’t have received the donations without him nor the fabulous new pontoon. It was also lovely to receive another donation from Lime & Lemon Interiors.

We have a good social media scene and with the help from Brian Davies we are now logged with several other volunteer organisations and support groups (Derbyshire Autism Services being a good example), we also plan to do more in this area in 2021. Rory Harden continues to do a great job on our website & is currently investigating the options of upgrading it.

We sent 2 postcards out from the trust, one during the first lockdown just to remind our Sailability families that we were here and then one in December just to wish everyone health and happiness for 2021 – thanks to Andy for the work he did on these.

This year we are launching our new fundraising venture called Mowability where we will maintain the boat plots for a donation to Sailability, we currently have 2 annual slots booked up and Rory has set up a separate booking page on the website.

Repton Scouts were due to be helping us in 2020 but due to covid-19 we had to put that on hold, we will see how this year goes with the latest guidelines etc.

We will have challenges in 2020 in delivering more funding, increasing our numbers of both participants and volunteers. We also want to encourage disabled adults to attend our sessions, so we want to do even more work with local support groups linked to disabled children and adults.

I would like to record formally my thanks to all my fellow trustees, friends, family and volunteers who continue to support the trust in its aims and this year in particular was a difficult one, we all know without this support none of this would have been possible.

I would also call out the support we have received from the Sailing Club to work with us in delivering our aims, the Commodore Howard Jones has been fully behind us.
