2023 Walkabout Flintshire Annual Report
The aim of Walkabout Flintshire is to provide free volunteer led walks and Nordic walking in a variety of locations throughout the county.
Last year walks were held in Mold on Monday’s and Tuesday’s , Flint, Halkyn, Caerwys, Holywell, Shotton, Penyffordd, Llanasa and Caerwys with additional special walks and out of town walks undertaken and Nordic Walking in Greenfield.
536 walks were undertaken, with 7633 walkers taking part and we welcomed 78 new walkers.
Walkabout Flintshire also held special out of town walks, including walks around Chester, Sychdyn, Gwernymynydd, Hope and Caergwrle, Greenfield Valley and the monthly Mold out of town walks. The out of town walks have proved very popular.
We would like to say a very special thank you to the most important members of Walkabout Flintshire, these are all the walk leaders and back up leaders who turn out in all weathers to ensure that walks take place. This gives us all an opportunity to enjoy shared physical activity as well as benefiting everyones good mental health. Having a chat, meeting old and new friends all contributes to our good physical and mental wellbeing. Many walks end with a visit to a pub or café to socialise after the walk as well. You may already be aware that Doctor’s are prescribing walking as a well-being activity and social prescribing is becoming more widespread.
2023 was also a very special year for Walkabout Flintshire as we celebrated it’s 20th Anniversary. This was celebrated with a special walk in Wepre Park, Connahs Quay. An excellent turn out of current and past walkers ensured that everyone had a fantastic time. Walkers were able to enjoy a choice of two graded walks followed by a picnic at the Visitor’s Centre. One walk went to Ewloe Castle and shorter walk around Wepre Park. 75 to 80 walkers took part and even local people expressed surprise at how nice this park is, as some had never visited it before. There was also a display of Walkabout Flintshire memorabilia in the Visitors Centre for everyone to enjoy.
In 2023 we also had a special event to celebrate and thank our wonderful walk leaders. A walk was arranged to visit the ground of Hawarden Castle woods
followed by refreshments at the Gladstone Library. It was a fantastic opportunity for all our walk leaders to get together.
This year the Trustees made a decision to reduce the number of Trustee meetings from 4 to 2 a year, so now they are being held in May and November.
