## **Charity No. 1170717** ## **MASAMBIRO UK** # **ANNUAL REPORT AND UNAUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020** ## **LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION** Trustees Ravina Bijlani Samuel Greene Jason Strelitz Hannah Weisfeld Mandy Wilkins (Chair) Charity Number 1170717 Principal Address 28 Queens Avenue, London N3 2NP Independent Examiner Angela Wimborne 2 ## **CONTENTS** Page - 4-6 Trustees’ Report - 7 Independent Examiners Report - 8 Receipts and Payments - 9 Statement of Assets and Liabilities 3 ## **ANNUAL REPORT** The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31 December 2020. ## **Objectives and Activities** Masambiro UK’s objectives are: The advancement of education for the people of Malawi for the public benefit, including, although not exclusively by: - supporting the building of educational facilities such as classrooms - supporting bursaries to school and university students based on need - supporting teacher training - supporting vocational training for school graduates - supporting adult education - providing educational resources such as text books, science equipment - supporting facilities and staff required for income generation projects for schools The relief of poverty for the people of Malawi for the public benefit including, although not exclusively by: - supporting vocational training for school graduates - the creation of feeding programmes in educational establishments - providing school fees and other resources for those that are otherwise unable to access education as a result of poverty The advancement of health for the people of Malawi for the public benefit, including, although not exclusively by: - supporting health programmes in the local community - supporting health education within educational establishments - providing assistance to individuals in need of life-saving healthcare which is otherwise unavailable to them - raising funds for the provision of medical equipment for local clinics and hospitals ## **Achievements and Performance** In 2020 we continued to provide regular assistance to Kunyanja Private Secondary School via Kunyanja Educational Trust, in addition to significant Covid-19 budget support to help the school through shortfalls which arose as a result of lockdown closures. The school provided Covid-19 assistance to the surrounding communities, something that Masambiro UK was also able to fund. We also continued to fund life-saving cancer treatment in South Africa for our project director Sydney Simumba ## Covid-19 emergency support Schools shut at the end of March 2020 as part of the Malawian government’s Covid-19 strategy. Without any type of government support such as that available in the UK, and no school fees being collected from pupils, Kunyanja Secondary School faced a significant shortfall to pay staff salaries and other overheads such as utilities. Masambiro UK launched an emergency fundraising appeal, and we were able to match fund some of the fundraised income through a supporter’s workplace scheme, significantly boosting the fundraising appeal. Schools reopened at the start of the school year in September with significant social distancing requirements and regulations such as needing to take the temperatures of students and teachers. Masambiro 4 provided support for the school to purchase additional chairs so students could be spread out further in classrooms, and thermometers which are a significant expense as they need to be imported from South Africa. Once school reopened in September, Kunyanja, like many schools in Malawi, faced a significant drop in the number of students attending. This affected the school’s income due to a reduction in school fee income and required us to send further emergency support. ## Supporting the local community in managing Covid-19 We were able to provide the school with a small budget to enable them to undertake public health education in relation to managing Covid-19 in the wider community. This included donating buckets and soap for handwashing, and masks to other schools, community elders and the local prison. The school also facilitated and hosted Covid-19 training for over 80 clergy men and women, which was run by the local District Health officials. ## Medical support for Sydney Simumba. We continued to support one of the project director’s, Sydney Simumba, cancer treatment in South Africa. This involved ongoing radiotherapy followed by surgery and a biopsy. Unfortunately, the treatment was unsuccessful, and therefore he eventually returned to Malawi as no further treatment options were available to him. He currently remains relatively well in Malawi, continuing to fulfil his duties at the school. It is unclear how long he will be able to remain in good enough health to continue to work and teach. Masambiro is making plans for how to manage this situation in the long term. ## General school support Alongside the significant additional Covid-19 support, we continued to provide the school with budgetary support which we provide in normal circumstances. This included 50% bursaries for 80 students enrolled at Kunyanja Secondary School, ensuring that those coming from the poorest of backgrounds were able to access the high-quality education at the school. We also continued to fund in full the fees of 25 staff wards (i.e. family members of staff working at the school). We continued to provide bursaries for 10 Kunyanja students who were awarded places at university and provided support for Feston Singoyi, our second project director, to pursue Masters Degree. For the period of the academic year that the school was open, we continued to fund 4 female students to live at the girls dormitory on the school site which was built using funds from Masambiro UK. ## **Financial Review** In the year to 31 December 2020, we raised £56,089 from donations, grants and fundraising events. We made transfers to Kunyanja School of £48,300 and spent £7,719 on medical treatment for Sydney Simumba. We were left with reserves of £11,090. Our financial processes remain the same as previous years. The trustees maintain regular contact with the directors of the project and approve a budget at the beginning of each academic year. Funds are transferred to Malawi three times a year on receipt of a report of expenditure and performance for the previous term. The trustees have committed that one trustee will visit Malawi every 12-18 months to meet with project directors face-to-face and review the progress in person against financial and performance reports. This ensures that our funds are being properly spent. This has not been possible in the past 18 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is currently unclear when we may be able to resume trips to Malawi as 5 vaccination rates remain low and therefore, we are unlikely to be able to travel without quarantining on return. Consequently, we will monitor the project through maintaining more regular contact with project directors via telephone, video calls and email. Trustees maintain a policy that we will make a regular commitment to fund a certain number of students to attend school and university on an annual basis, and when additional funds are available, we will work with the project directors in Malawi to ascertain what spending priorities are. Our reserves policy dictates that additional items are not funded unless Masambiro UK is already in receipt of the required funds for the upcoming transfer for our regular commitments to the project, alongside there being a clear idea of how any additional funds will be raised. Trustee Ravina Bijlani, who is a qualified accountant, acts as the Treasurer. The trustees are closely monitoring our finances and looking for additional sources of income, particularly in light of the ongoing financial crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the need to provide additional support whilst also not being able to make definitive fundraising plans in the UK ## **Structure, Governance and Management** Masambiro UK is established pursuant to its Trust Deed dated 1 November 2016 and is registered under the Charities Act 2011, charity number 1170717. The charity commenced its activities in January 2017. Trustees that served throughout 2020 were: Ravina Bijlani Samuel Greene Jason Strelitz Hannah Weisfeld Mandy Wilkins (Chair) All decisions are taken by the board of trustees as listed above, and Masambiro UK does not pay any staff to administer its activities. The trustees maintain regular contact with the project directors in Malawi and funds are transferred on receipt of regular reports from the trustees and directors in Malawi. Where there is a requirement for new trustees, these would be identified and appointed by the remaining trustees. Mandy Wilkins, the Chair of trustees, is responsible for the induction of any new trustee which involves awareness of a trustee's responsibilities, the history and the administrative procedures of the charity. The trustees annually review the risks that the charity faces. The best ways to mitigate these risks are then put into place. The trustees are satisfied that the charity faces minimal or no risk in the upcoming year.
