Objectives and Activities

The objects of the CIO are:

For the public benefit, the relief of those in need by reason of ill health or life limiting conditions (children up to 18 years of age). In particular, but not exclusively by; (a) the provision of grants and financial assistance, (b) by funding research and (c) by raising awareness.

Funds shall be allocated in accordance with the objects based on the need relating to each object and to ensure the effective operation of the charity as determined by the Trustees.

In setting our objectives and planning our activities the trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit.

Developments, Activities and Achievements during the period

Events taking place Apr 22- Apr 23

J Reid has continued to make monthly donations via direct debit, this has provided a grant for a child each year.

On 11th-12th June 22 the Maia Mouse Foundation Ultra-Marathon team of 15, took on their 3rd 100km UltraMarathon. The Race to the King Ultra-Marathon took place along the Sussex Coast ending at Goodwood Racecourse. Completing the challenge within 24 hours, the team raised £7,960 via their Just Giving campaign.

On 18th August 22, White Digital arranged a corporate Golf Day to raise funds for Maia Mouse Foundation. The golf day took place at Rockliffe Hall Golf Club and raised a total of £8031.98 (this payment was made into the HSBC account after the end of this financial year May 23 so will appear on next year’s accounts). As part of this fundraiser there was also a £2,000 donation made to the charity.

In December 22 D Haigh & Co donated the proceeds of their Christmas Raffle to the Maia Mouse Foundation, raising £700.

Also in December 22, residents in the village of West Auckland, raised funds for the Maia Mouse Foundation by opening their home up as a Santa’s Grotto. They raised £250.

The charity approved 9 grants during the financial year, of those 9 had funds leave the account before 5th April 2023. Grant examples include;

Relationships

During this financial year, referrals have come from Shooting Star Children’s Hospice, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, Donna Louise Children’s Hospice & Claire House Children’s Hospice.

Our aim for the next financial year is to re-engage hospices & build relationships with the Social Workers/Heads of Care in order to allocate more grants to children.

Organisational Structure

The day to day running of the charity is led by the Secretary, Gemma Baum, supported by the trustees. There are no paid members of staff.

Financial Review

The gross income of the charity for the period was £13,912 (2022 - £11,366). This was all raised through fundraising and donations. The gross expense of the charity for the period was £7,121 (2022 - £11,882).

Reserves

The trustees endeavour to maintain a working balance of funds to enable a rapid response to people’s needs whilst at the same time ensuring that funds are directed promptly to the purposes for which they are raised. At the period end the charity held £129,499 (2022 - £122,708) in reserves, all of which are unrestricted.

All funds are held with HSBC.

Other

There are no known claims against the charity. Insurance is maintained by the Trustees for public liability up to £1m.

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing document

Maia Mouse Foundation is a registered charity governed by a Constitution of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation who’s only voting members are its charity trustees. The charity was founded on 21 August 2016, and it was registered with the Charity Commission (registered charity number 1170696) on 12 December 2016.

Recruitment of Trustees

Trustees are sought who will bring added value to the charity. Applicants would normally be found by recommendation of the existing trustees or supporters. Prospective trustees are assessed by the trustees before appointment.

Trustees’ Responsibility for the Financial Statements

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in [England & Wales/Northern Ireland][1] requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period.

In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Maia Mouse Foundation For the year ended to 5 April 2023

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 5 April 2023 which are set out on pages 6 to 8.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Accounting Policies

a) Basis of Accounting

The financial statements have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis is accordance with section 133 of the Charities Act 2011.

b) Guarantees and secured debts

The trustees confirm, in accordance with the Charitable Incorporated Organisations (General) Regulations 2012, that at the year end the CIO did not have any outstanding guarantees to third parties nor any debtors secured on assets of the CIO.
