Report of Trustees

Ceri Jones, Ceri Lewis, Graham Merriman, Sheila Cosker & Jason Hole October 2024 – September 2025

Membership

In 2025 the club had 40 members. 24 men, 16 ladies.

Congratulations to Sheila Cosker who served Vice President for West Glamorgan Ladies, Ceri Lewis who served as President to Port Talbot District League.

Leagues

The men played in the 1[nd] Division of the Neath League. This was a very strong League and the team struggled to compete, winning only 1 game. As a result the team was relegated and will play in Division 2 next season

They also played in the 2[nd] Division of the Port Talbot League and finished in 6[th] place securing their place in the same Division next season.

CARRUTHERS SHIELD

The club played in the round robin matches but failed to progress to the knockout stage.

The Ladies

In the Afternoon League, last year the Ladies came 10[th] out of 13 Teams. This year we make great inroads and finished 3[rd] out of 13 Teams!

In the Evening League, last year we came 7[th] out of 9 Teams. This year, another improvement as we came 5[th] out of 9 Teams.

Competitions

Ladies - Many of the Ladies competed in Pairs, Triples and Rinks. We didn’t make any of the semifinals this year, but we did cause a few upsets on the way.

Men – Most of the Men (including 1 Junior) entered Local and County Tournaments.

Hot Shots

The Trustees are delighted to report that the Ladies had their first 2 Hot Shots this season. Sandra and Dilys scored one in their County Pairs match. Dilys, Sheila, Hilary and Sharon D also scored a Hot Shot during a league match.

West Glamorgan

Howard Daniel played in all the West Glamorgan Men Seniors games who went on to win the Welsh, County Championship.

This season, Sheila Cosker, Pam Taylor, Angela Crosbie and Dilys Davies were selected to play for West Glamorgan at County level. Unfortunately, West Glam didn’t qualify for the Welsh finals.

Bryn Welfare Bowls Club Tournament 2025

The ladies singles competition was won by Sheila Cosker and the men’s competition was won by Jason Hole.

The mixed doubles competition was won by Sharon Hall and Ceri Jones.

The Green and Pavilion

The Trustees continued the contract with Absolute Grasscare who carried out work on the Green, provided materials and consulted with the Green Committee.

Under the direction of Absolute Grasscare the club took responsibility for cutting, verticutting, spiking and the application of Compost Tea.

The club has continued to receive praise for the condition of the Green. This reflects the hard work and dedication of the team lead by Mick Cosker.

Throughout the year repairs, maintenance and further improvements were made.

a) Replaced the ditch edging along 3 sides.

b) Laying of astro turf near gate and edge of garden

c) All hedges attended.

d) Flower Garden maintained by Jo Matthews

e) Watering system for garden.

Food and Hygiene Certificate and License

Sheila and Sharon D have both achieved Food and Hygiene certificates and together they have worked hard to prepare the Pavilion kitchen for a Food and Hygiene Inspection. As a result, they have attained a 5-star rating.

The club also made a successful application for a License to sell alcohol and consume alcohol on the premises. The license has a number of restrictions e.g. only operational between 1[st] April and 30[th] September.

Other Events

A Memorial / Fun Day was held in memory of last year’s captain David Cooper. His family and members joined together to play a game in his honour.

This year saw the start of an annual competition with Alltwen Bowls Club in which both teams competed for a trophy in memory of past players from both clubs. This year it was held at the home of Alltwen with members staying after the match to enjoy the hospitality and entertainment provided by Alltwen. Next year Bryn Welfare will host the event.

The club hosted the West Glamorgan Men Seniors on three occasions. The first was a pre season Trial. They also played their home matches in Bryn, winning both. After the matches the Ladies put on a meal at the Bryn Rugby, Sports and Social Club. The trustees would like to thank those members that helped make these days a great success.

The 2025 Club Tour to Weston was another success and we received warm welcomes at Burnham Bowling Club and St. Andrews Bowling Club.

The club were pleased to welcome Trentham Bowling Club as part of their tour to South Wales. The club provided a buffet on their arrival at Bryn Rugby Club and after the match both sides returned to the Rugby Club. The Trustees would like to thank the Rugby Club for their continued support.

The club joined other organisations in the village to lay a wreath on Remembrance Sunday at the Bryn War Memorial. (Nov 2024)

The continuation and success of the club is central to every decision the Trustees make and we are very grateful for the contributions and support of all members.
