Membership
For the season 2023 the club had 46 members. 24 men and 18 ladies as full members and 4 as social members.
Leagues
The men played in the 2[nd] Division of the Neath League and the 1[st] Division of the Port Talbot League. They also took part in the Curruthers Cup.
NEATH LEAGUE
The league is to be re-structured next season so the challenge was to finish in the top 5 to maintain our place in Division 2. Going into the last month of the season 2 teams had broken clear and pushing for the 1 promotion place available. 5 other teams were fighting it out for the other 3 places to stay in Division 2. Thanks to a strong end of season the club fiished in a comfortable 3[rd] place.
PORT TALBOT LEAGUE
During the 2023 Season the club struggled to win matches, often falling short in the last few ends. The club finished in 8[th] place and as a result will play in Division 2 next year.
CARRUTHERS SHIELD
The club played in the round robin matches but failed to progress to the knockout stage.
Three Men played for the West Glamorgan Seniors (Gareth Jones, Brian Hughes and Andrew Shelton) while 6 played in the West Glamorgan President’s Team.
On a number of occasions ladies were asked to play for the teams in these matches.
The Ladies played in the West Glamorgan County Afternoon and Evening Leagues.
The Afternoon League requires 12 players and we fell short several times. The club finished 9[th] out of 12 Teams in the Afternoon league.
The Evening League only had 7 Teams overall and sadly, despite our best efforts, we finished 7[th] .
Three Ladies represented the county – Sheila Cosker, Jo Matthews and Christine Williams
Ladies were given as many opportunities to play as possible but it was difficult to always put out a full team and on a number of occasions men were invited to take part.
The trustees would like to express their thanks to the Selection Committees for their efforts and fully appreciate how difficult it is to maintain a fair approach to selection while adhering to the ROTA system.
Competitions
13 Men and 10 Ladies took part in County Tournaments.
Ladies took part in pairs and triples competition with some going through to the second round but unfortunately, no-one reached the semi-finals.
Men – Andrew Shelton in the singles and the Men’s Four (Ceri Lewis, Brian Hughes, David Cooper and Gareth Jones) progressed through to Finals Day in Llandrindod Wells.
Bryn Welfare Bowls Club Tournament 2023
The ladies singles competition was won by Jo Matthews and the men’s competition was won by Howard Daniel.
The mixed doubles competition was won by Pam Taylor and Leighton Newport.
The Green and Pavilion
The Trustees continued the contract with Absolute Grasscare who carried out work on the Green, provided materials and consulted with the Green Committee.
Under the direction of Absolute Grasscare the club took responsibility for cutting, verticutting, spiking and the application of Compost Tea.
The Green played exceptionally well all through the season and many visiting players and Ladies County Officials were very complimentary.
Throughout the year members carried out a number of works.
a) Replaced all boards adjacent to tennis court. (1 had broken and caused the bank to collapse) b) Astro Turf laid around all sides.
c) Wiring for the watering system was completed.
d) All hedges attended.
e) Flower Garden maintained.
f) Pavilion painted and cleaned.
The Trustees were informed that a very generous sum of money had been made available for the development of the patio. When this was confirmed work began to extend the patio. install new doors for the pavilion and build a new fence. As lease holders we had to inform the council who then drew up a new lease agreement to cover the patio area.
Other Events
The club joined other organisations in the village to lay a wreath on Remembrance Sunday at the Bryn War Memorial. (Nov 2022)
A Presentation Evening took place at Bryn Rugby, Sports and Social Club.
At the end of April we were pleased to welcome Chasewater Bowls Club who were on tour in the area.
In May a friendly match against Pontrhydyfen took place and was followed by a BBQ which both teams enjoyed.
The club hosted the West Glamorgan President’s Team and the West Glamorgan County Ladies Team. After the matches the Ladies put on a meal at the Bryn Rugby, Sports and Social Club. The 2023 Club Tour to Weston-Super-Mare was another success and we received warm welcomes at Burnham Bowls Club and Victoria Bowls Club.
Friends and family were invited to take part in a Fun Day at the end of the season.
The continuation and success of the club is central to every decision the Trustees make and we are very grateful for the contributions and support of the members.
