## **Objectives and Activities**

||SORP
reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document|Para 1.17|The overall object of ASEAS(UK) is to
advance the education of the public on the
subject of Southeast Asia and to promote
research for the public benefit in all
disciplines of that subject and to disseminate
the useful results by such means as the
trustees see fit.|
|Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.|Para 1.17
and 1.19|**Digital Impact Award**
Due to the impact of COVID-19 on
international travel, at the beginning of 2021
the ASEAS Executive Committee decided to
offer a Digital Impact Award instead of the
annual Research Impact Awards, which fund
travel to conferences and research visits to
Southeast Asia.
The aim of the Digital Impact Award was to
support the creation of a digital project
based on research that had already been
conducted in Southeast Asia. The project
could be a film, a website or another artistic
project to help researchers communicate
their research in a fresh way and to people
outside of academia, as well as to an
academic audience.
The first Digital Impact Award was launched
in spring and the first recipient was Dr.
Charlie Rumsby who is using the award to
create a short film about Christian mission in
Cambodia.
Recently ASEAS opened a call for another
round of applications, which closed on 30
November 2021. The recipient will be
announced in early 2022.
**Online Event Series**
Due to the travel restrictions caused by
COVID-19, ASEAS postponed its 2020
conference and launched an online event
series,which has been verysuccessful and|

|||well attended.
Events have included the Southeast Asia
Digital Summer School, which was run jointly
with the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia
Centre at the London School of Economics.
This took place over three days in May 2021
and events covered a wide range of topics
aimed at helping early career researchers
with their career development, including
succeeding in publishing; decolonising
research; and post-academic and alt-
academic career paths.
In November 2020 ASEAS also held an
online event entitled ‘COVID-19 and Political
Polarisation in Indonesia’, which looked at
how the Indonesian government’s Covid-19
response has revitalised opposition towards
President Joko Widodo.|
|---|---|---|
|Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit|Para 1.18|ASEAS Trustees have had due regard to the
Charity Commission’s public benefit
guidance.|

|Policy on grant making|Para 1.38|In accordance with ASEAS(UK) Constitution
clause 18(1) (Delegation by charity trustees),
the Executive Committee shall appoint a
Research Committee of three members, at
least one of whom should also be a member
of the Executive Committee. The Executive
Committee shall appoint the Chair and
Secretary of the Research Committee for the
purpose of raising research funds and
deciding upon their allocation on behalf of
ASEAS(UK).|

## **Achievements and Performance**

||SORP
reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|**Digital Impact Awards**
The Spring 2021 Digital Impact Award is
funding the creation of a short film about
Christian mission in Cambodia. The digital
project is based on research into the
provision of informal education and training,
delivered by a mission organisation offered
to ethnic Vietnamese youth that do not
receive education or skills-based training
from the Cambodian state, in fashion
design, paper art and phone repair.
The creation of the film will allow for the
research to be promoted on non-traditional
platforms; advance the reach of the
research to non-academic audiences
through film screenings; remove the
language barriers / paywall barriers that an
academic written output creates; raise
awareness of the issue of exclusion from
universal provision of education as ratified
by the UN Convention of the Rights of the
Child; raise the national and international
profile of the research through submission
into film festivals.
**Website**
The ASEAS website continues to publish
reviews of books, encompassing a range of
Southeast Asian Studies topics. This is an
invaluable tool for researchers, particularly at
a time when traditional journals are
publishing fewer reviews.
**Member Newsletter**
In June 2020 ASEAS carried out a survey of
members, which sought to find out how
ASEAS could better serve its constituency.
Many expressed a wish for a regular
newsletter, which we launched in August
2020.
In light of the impact of COVID-19 on
academic research and job security, the
newsletter is an invaluable addition to the
ASEAS membership offering, providing
information on opportunities, the latest
research, as well as highlighting the
achievements of members, including recent
publications, awards and grants.
**Membership and Social Media**
We currently have 132 members, which is
an increase of 23 from last year’s report.
This is mainlydue to the online events and|

the promotional discounted memberships we have run for early career researchers in the lead up to early career events. We usually see membership decline in between conferences so it is positive to see a steady increase. Online, Facebook group membership has increased to 5200 members and 891 Twitter followers. Our social media pages provide a lively forum for news and discussion between academics and interested members of the public across the UK and Southeast Asia. **Research Excellence Framework** In 2021 ASEAS Executive Committee Chair Deirdre McKay was appointed to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 Area Studies panel, which is assessing submissions between May 2021 and February 2022, working under the guidance of four main panels. This is indicative of ASEAS’ national recognition and will enable the organisation to shape the way Southeast Asian studies is researched and taught in the coming years as well as building academic, industry and third sector collaborations between UK and the region.

|Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern|Para 1.23|Although we have seen less in expenditure
this year as a result of the pandemic, we
have also seen a loss in revenue. It is clear
that without an in-person conference,
ASEAS(UK) needs to find new ways to gain
and retain members in order to remain
financially viable. The Digital Impact Award
has been a boost to membership numbers,
as have recent online initiatives such as the
Postdoc workshop and our collaborations
with the LSE Southeast Asia Research
Centre. We need to continue to offer such
incentives until an in-person conference can
help generate a larger amount of revenue.|
