1. The preseTrth conservation of the Grade Il" Listed
Bapts'stery and other historical remains associated with the Baptistery
in Menxuddle Valley for the benefft of the public.

the Bapkn'stery aTra the ecolc*Jical importance of the surrounding area.
3. To provide or assist in the provision of factlities for recreation and
other leisutE time oc￿p*'0n in the interests of social wetfare wrth the
obiect of improving the conditions of lrfe of the public by the
conservation, enhan￿ment and rna1ntenan￿ of the original Wictorian
omarrEnL4 garden in men￿ddle Valley.

The work carried OLrt at Menacuddle Well in 2025 was to further the
Friends objectives to maintain. improve. and ensure for the future, a
peaceful locats'on for the general public to exercise, relax and r&connect
with nature. Four General Meetings were held in which the trustees and

The main activtties undertaken in relation to the objectives listed above
were as ouUined below:
1. The condition of the Baptistery was monitored and the immediate
area around it was kept dear of leaves etc. The drain was rodded
as n￿eSSary to allow overltow from the spring into the river, and
the iron grill across the drain. which h&J gone missing, was found
and replaced. It was noted that hvo or three substantial ¢apping
stones had been rer￿Ved by sorrEone from the parapet of the
'beam' or 'linlel' granite road bndge ￿rosS the river, and
invesligations were made into the best way of repairing the
damage when funds would allu4Y.

2. A number of events were attended in order to increase local
areness of the site, induding manning stalls at the dimate fair
at a local church and in the Market House at the St Austell
Christmas Fair. A presentation was also given to the St Austell
Ladies Luncheon Club. where four of the trustees gave an
illustrated talk on the beginniros of the Menxuddle Well
restoration project. the history of the stte, and the evolution from
overgrown 'jungle' to the present planting scheme and the re-
establishment of wldlrfe. There were around 30 attendees and the
talk was very well received.
The annual Rernernbran￿ servi￿ held in honour of all th8 lives
lost in wars past arKI present was this year attended by residents
and carers from the neighbouring nursing home as well as
representstives of Treverbyn Parish Council, ex-servi
personnel. and general members of the public. The very mving
occasion was led by one of the chanty trustees and v￿nderfullY
supported by the Royal British Legion, who prowded stsndard
beareryJ and a bugler to accompany the laying of wreaths and
spngs of rosema

3. Eleven Welly Days, were planned for 2025, when most of the
physical work at the site V•Y)uld be Carried out by volunteers,
though the weather was so awful on two of the days that they ha
to be Can￿led1 Howe%Er, much was achiev￿1 on the remaining
nine Welly Days and other &J h¢￿ ocwions, induding to." Clear,
rake and add chIp￿ngS to paths" use the composted waste
from the srte bins to mukh the gardens; prune shrubs and trees
and remove un¥vdnted large branches from trees; relocate se￿-
seed￿1 shrubs into new locations. dear overgrowth from the river
bank; rtrpaint wooden picnic tables and bendles; remove
invasive HI￿dayan Balsam., dear from the pond,. plant 5
sacks of primulas and numerous geraniums.. erect tree guards,.
and label important Flant specirrens for visitorfs infornation.
Major new planting was ￿rried out using the remainder of the
Imerys grant from 2024. This indud&J: A Hoheria 'Snow White, to
give sumnw colour at the main pcnic area.. a Maus 'Evereste'
crab apple to pr(XIu￿ frurts for the community and wildlife; and
three rh¢>Jodendrons to prowde sU￿Ssion planting of the most
prominent plants on the slte. Finally. access to the sile was
improv&Y thanks to a hetpful Comtsc sub<ontr&tor filling some
of the potholes on the entran￿ road with a hovcold tarn￿C mix.
The Friends are ccM)ttnually looking at 0Oions of Improwng
ac(Y&s to the gardens. and to this end the possikn'lity of replacjng
the old concrete footbridge across the tiver with a new, more
sympathetic. wheelchair friendly bridge was explored. Quotes and
grant opportunities were sourctd, and work will continue to try
and redise this ambition.
Another opportunty also arose this year to revisit the effort to re-
open the ¢Jd riverside ￿dIk from the town to Mena¢uddle Well.
Under ComwaH C(WTKiE's 'Rights of INay IMpr0￿ment Fyan, it
may be possible to designate the walk as a Right of Way rf
eviden￿ can be provided of previous use by the public. or of
designation in the past as a 'Public Highway.. Work started to try
to gather evidence, in fx)njunclion wilh the Old Comwall Society,
the Town and Parish Counols. St Austeil Health Care, other local
groups and dignitaries, and members of the public.

As ever, the tmstees would like to extend our thanks to the volunteers
who freely give their ts.me in helpHng to cary out the wort in the gardens
throughout the year. This year rt was a particular pleasure to welcome to
Welly Day, a Year 10 student carying out vduntary work for her Duke
of Edinburgh award. along with her younger sister.

during the year
As well as the general work of maintaining the gardens and pathways in
a condition to improve the experien￿ of the visiting public, the trustees
and volunteers COn￿ntrated on the plans previously laid out for the year.
Good progress was made with all our efforts, and they were rewarded by
the many complimentary comments of Vit￿10rS.
The invasive plant species. particularfy Himalayan Balsam, which had
been taking over the river banks were removed, and this allowed self-
seeded tree ferns to establish themselves, helping to stabilise the banks,
and giving a fantastic welcoming view along the river.
The interesting and important speamen plants were labelled with discrete
signage to prowde totanical infonnation as part of our remit to educate
the public in the ecological importanc? of the area. This infrjrmation was
also induded in the presentation ￿"ven. and ebents attended, throughout
the year.
Suc£ession planting of Rhododrendron Athreum and other specimen
trees was completed to help ensure the preseprfation of the heritage of
the site for future generalions.
The &tivtties (xrried out at The Well continued to re￿1ve wide coverage
from the media and I￿al organisats'ons. The Comish Times online
published an artide and phot¢>Jraphs of the Memorial Servi￿, and v
were delighted to see a gigantic photograph of the baptistery and
waterfall induded on a permanent banner display ol local attractions in
the town centre.
The final judgement of the work in the gardens was given by the Royal
Horticultural Sojety judge for the South West in Bloom compets'tion. He
again awarded us a 'Level 5 - Outstanding, rating and commented that
the site was 'A wonderful oass which Sl Austell can be proud of.

£379 of cash funds w￿e held in the Current account at year end, all of
which was unrestricted. This is in line with the policy to hold betsveen
£200 and £1,000 in reserve to cover exFenses such as Publi¢ Liabilty
InsUr8n￿, purchase of plants, equipment and hert)icides etc for
maintenance of the gardens. and unforeseen expenditure such as repair
of damage c4used by acts of vandalism.

The Charity did not ap￿ for any major funding for 2025, but the trustees
were grateful for the donation of 5 sacks of primulas by a local nursery,
and a cash don*'on of £50 from the St Austell Ladies Luncheon Club,
followng a presentation given by trustees. Various methods of
fundraising are ￿rrenty being investigated 10 5UPPOrt the ongoing costs
of maintenance of the gardens in the future.
