Work continued ap￿ in 2023 at the beautiful site of Menacuddle Well to
further our aims to prowde an area of'managed wildness. in the

2. The most significant connection this year wtlh large numbers of
members of the public was at the annual St. Austell Garden
Festival. Trustees manr)ed a stand in the town centre amied with
photographs and information about Menacuddle Well to spread
the word about the work being carried out and the significance of
the site to the local area. We spoke to many people who had
never visited, or even heard of. the Well previously and handed
out around 100 informatbon leafiets. It was particulat1y satisfying to
speak to a worker from the neighbouring Care HoffE and fumish
him with leafiets to en(x)urage mre of the Home's residents to
app￿late the site.
As in prev￿U$ years the main event held in the Gardens to
engage with ￿￿rnber$ of the public was the November
Remembrance Se[w￿. The Servi￿ seeks lo commemorate all
those who have lost their lives in ￿mbaI through the ages and
remembers the sp￿la1 connection of the site with Richard
Graves-sawle, who's death in Worfd War l is immortalised on
plaque on the Bapts"stery wall. The ￿reTr￿)nY was again attended
by Standard Bearer5 and a bugler from the Royal British Legion
and. for the first time, was conducted by one of the Friends own
Trustees. The 'St. Austell Vol￿, local ne•ispaper recognised the
event with photOgra￿S on the front page and further coverage on
inside pages.

A number of Trustees attended an event held for volunteer groups

3. Eight 'Welly Days, We￿ hdd throughoLrt 2023 as well as
numerous other sessions where small groups of %ff)lunteers would
work on rnaintenance and improvement of the site. The main
tasks carried cKrt at these sessions were to: Weed and lrtter-pick
around the establish&J plants., mulch the beds and in-fill with
plants such as primula and fOrget-m&rM￿s. as well as countless
numbers of bulbs; dear surface weed from the pond: pnjne

previously laid paths. and remo%ing s(Jil which had accumulated
along the ￿￿e$S road.
A specxal volunteer day was arranga4 as part of the national 'Big
Help Out Dty to celebrate the 17)ronation of King ChaTles111. The
event was widdy *J%Ertised locally, with tea, coffee and cakes
provided and a 'WeS1 Wldlrfe Quiz Sheer produced for wsiting
Child￿rn. Unfortunately the weather was atrooous, with heavy rain
for much of the aftemoon, Lxrt a few hardy souls sheltered under a
gaze￿ for refreshments after planting a Sorbus wlmorinii in
honour of the nthv King and ca￿1ng out what other tasks they
coukl while dodging the rain.
A contr&tor was employed to dear the smothering overgrowing
laurel from along the river bank to the south of the road bridge
and open up the entrance view of the site. The cost was
generously ￿Vered equally by St. Austell Brewery and Trevert)yn
Parish Counol.
The Charrty Commission guidance on public benefft is taken into
account when planning all a￿1VitieS.

Achievements and performance
Summary ofthe maln
achievemonts of the chartty
durfng tho year
It is go(>J to report that the majotity of the objectives that the Friends set
for 2023 ￿re achie4￿ as planned, with just a couple Carried over until
next year.
A large Wldltfe Hotel was constructed in the South Garden next to a ne
wilthower patth sNn with numerous native species to prowde fts)d for
the hotel residents. The Hotel was provided with accommodation for
hedgehogs aTrJ other small animals in the base, and with nooks and
crdnnies in the upper compartments surtable for solitary bees (such as
MagJn and Orchard speaes). butterflies. bugs. spiders. lacewings et¢.
The Hotel was tOPFed off wth a green roof planted with sedum, which
proved hardy enough to survive dl that the weather could throw at it
throughout the year.
The sustainabilty of the site was further improved with the donation by
Cornac of more large wooden ￿mpOSI cx)ntainers to enable us to
process mre pl*rt waste and to produce leaf mould for use in the
gardens.
A 5 year plan of action was finalised and shar￿j with Cornac, the
representslives of Comwall Counal. This should help us to focus our
future efforts. and also means that we can carry out planned actions
without having to seek further penrbission from the Courtil.
The Gardens ￿ntinue to imFYove each year as the llowers, shrubs and
trees grow and bloom. aThJ it is always pleasing to see nature developing
in its own way- such as with the discovery of a wild white foxglove near
the Bapts'stery. The hundreds of crocuses planted by the Rotarians in
2022 gave teautilul (x)lour at the beginning of the year, and it was good
to see the retum of the duck and drake to the pond. There were some
setbth when the severe siomis suffered in the wintef months
unfortunately led to the loss of 2 mature rhododendrons,. an ash tree was
lost to dieback, and a recently planted walnut tree was also lost. The
large trees were removed by Cormac and will be repla￿1 as part of the
Suc￿s1On planting plan.
