Section C Ob"ectives and activities Since 2015, My Shining Star has supported families facing the challenges of childhood cancer by providing vital emotional, practical, and financial assistance. Our mission is to ensure that no family has to worry about basic needs such as housing or food while coping with the trauma of childhood cancer the leading cause of death in children under 16. Key areas of support provided.. Financial Relief. Help with debts, food costs, parking and travel expenses, and grants to families in crisis. Hospital and In-Hospital Support: Over 6,500 gifts donated to hospitals across the UK, plus direct grants and toys for children during hospital stays. • Emotional and Psychological Support: Bereavement counselling, trauma therapy for the entire family, and sibling support to help children cope with separation and trauma. Practical Assistance.. Provision of clothing, white goods (e.g. fridges to store medicine), and specialist equipment such as beds and orthotics not supplied by the NHS. Advocacy and Signposting.. Campaigning for increased government support, and liaison with social services to ensure families access all available help. • Respite and Special Experiences: Organising respite breaks and magical experiences with celebrities or organisations such as Disney, when possible. Celebration Support.. Provision of birthday and Christmas gifts to bring joy during difficult times. Through these activities, we aim to reduce the emotional and financial burden on families, ensuring they feel supported and not alone during the most challenging times. The charity have undertaken the purchase of a caravan in December 2023., this is to provide respite and has been adapted for children affected by cancer by addition of a disabled ramp. The caravan is within close proximity to our local hospital in case of any emergencies. In the time period of this report, the charity has distributed 91 grants to families. The areas of need were for therapy, food vouchers, essential items such as washing machine, hospital pushchair, support with high priority bills and debts (red letter demands), clothing, sibling support, gifts for Christmas and birthdays, parking and petrol, food whilst in hospital. One gentleman had a child in hospital and his laptop was stolen from outside his address which meant he could not continue working from home whilst caring for his daughter. My Shining Star replaced this preventing him from falling further into poverty and putting further strains on the benefits system. Section C Ob"ectives and activities Since 2015, My Shining Star has supported families facing the challenges of childhood cancer by providing vital emotional, practical, and financial assistance. Our mission is to ensure that no family has to worry about basic needs such as housing or food while coping with the trauma of childhood cancer the leading cause of death in children under 16. Key areas of support provided.. Financial Relief. Help with debts, food costs, parking and travel expenses, and grants to families in crisis. Hospital and In-Hospital Support: Over 6,500 gifts donated to hospitals across the UK, plus direct grants and toys for children during hospital stays. • Emotional and Psychological Support: Bereavement counselling, trauma therapy for the entire family, and sibling support to help children cope with separation and trauma. Practical Assistance.. Provision of clothing, white goods (e.g. fridges to store medicine), and specialist equipment such as beds and orthotics not supplied by the NHS. Advocacy and Signposting.. Campaigning for increased government support, and liaison with social services to ensure families access all available help. • Respite and Special Experiences: Organising respite breaks and magical experiences with celebrities or organisations such as Disney, when possible. Celebration Support.. Provision of birthday and Christmas gifts to bring joy during difficult times. Through these activities, we aim to reduce the emotional and financial burden on families, ensuring they feel supported and not alone during the most challenging times. The charity have undertaken the purchase of a caravan in December 2023., this is to provide respite and has been adapted for children affected by cancer by addition of a disabled ramp. The caravan is within close proximity to our local hospital in case of any emergencies. In the time period of this report, the charity has distributed 91 grants to families. The areas of need were for therapy, food vouchers, essential items such as washing machine, hospital pushchair, support with high priority bills and debts (red letter demands), clothing, sibling support, gifts for Christmas and birthdays, parking and petrol, food whilst in hospital. One gentleman had a child in hospital and his laptop was stolen from outside his address which meant he could not continue working from home whilst caring for his daughter. My Shining Star replaced this preventing him from falling further into poverty and putting further strains on the benefits system. We have increased our runners for the London Landmarks half marathon. We were able to host a large, successful summer event in the local community which both regular supporters, the general public and our families affected by cancer were able to attend. Our income is largely based on donations due to our heavy presence in the community and the transparency of the support that we give. Raising awareness and campaigning for change within the cancer community is also of extreme importance to our values. This is to reduce poverty and ease pressure on public services- including the NHS, counselling and the local authorities.
