Now in its nineth year, Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund continues to provide much needed services for those living with dementia and their family carers. 

The past year has been one of transition for everyone in the country. We have seen a gradual move away from lockdowns and restrictions returning to a more normal way of life for most of the population. 

The successful vaccination program delivered via wonderful staff in the NHS and supported by thousands of volunteers across the country has enabled most vulnerable people to re-join society including our families caring for their loved ones that have a diagnosis of dementia. 

Our trustees are continually looking for ways to attract new volunteers to our activity groups and members to our committee. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested.

## **Report from the Chair:** Teresa Fyfe 

Recognising that the families we support would need more help than most to return to a normal way of life, Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund has restarted our family carer support group, with the help of Jim Fyfe, trustee. We also set up a range of social activity groups for our families. Held in the local community four days a week, these groups are providing opportunities for families to get to know one another thereby decreasing the sense of isolation that was felt during lockdown periods. It is wonderful to witness friendships being formed as a result of these groups and mutual support and advice being shared between families. In addition to our respite care service the social activity groups are providing valuable periods of informal respite for family carers. 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow trustees and members of the management committee old and new and our Patron and Carer representative Patrick Cox. Thanks to all your ongoing hard work and support I’m sure Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund will continue to grow as a local charity. 

I am incredibly sad to report that Patricia (Paddy) Flegg, a trustee and founder member of HDCF passed away earlier this year following a long illness. We have also had two trustees resign this past year. Sallyanne Cockrell - Minute Secretary, and Bill Ellis - Fundraising Lead. I would like to thank them for their hard work and commitment to the charity during their period of office. 

It is great to see a growing band of volunteers helping out at various activities. I am pleased to report that Bill Ellis remains a valuable volunteer for us, and we are very grateful to him for his ongoing support. Our thanks go to Jill Denny and Mary Hills who make and sell craft cards to raise funds. Thanks to Toni Miller who helps at the Memory Café and with Janet Strevens, committee member, put up our decorated Christmas tree in St Mary’s Church at their Tree Festival. 

Our thanks to Tracy Excell, another volunteer who does a fantastic job in keeping the fund ‘in the limelight’ on social media for all our films and other events – You are a star Tracy. 

During the year we have welcomed five new committee members. Nicky Kelly who will be joining our Community Liaison Team. Jackie Richardson and Anna Mickleburgh who will jointly lead our Fundraising Team. Janet Strevens, who has been instrumental in supporting our families at the activity groups and Vicky Hutchinson who has recently retired from Age UK and has now taken the Lead on our Community / Memory Café.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank First Choice Home Care and Prestige Care agencies and of course their highly dedicated Dementia Support teams who continue to provide a one-to-one respite care service. This service commissioned by HDCF aims to improve the lives of our families by helping to prevent Carer breakdown and reducing the need for early admission to residential care. The various activities and trips out that are provided, also serve to enhance the lives of people living with memory problems and dementia. 

Many thanks must also go to other local services that help us i.e., the Pear Tree Centre, Halesworth Volunteers, Cutlers Hill Surgery and of course the Alzheimer’s Society for providing a constant source of referrals. It is our intention in the coming year to develop even closer working relationships with these organisations thereby ensuring that Halesworth becomes an even more dementia friendly town than it already is. 

I would also like to thank the following individuals that are facilitating and enabling our social activity groups to operate so successfully. 

Firstly Helen Hayes, who during the height of the pandemic set up a Singing with Friends’ group online. This was the first activity group and is now held in Holton Village Hall. We are so grateful to Helen and Swell Music for obtaining a grant from Suffolk Community Foundation. I am pleased to report that Helen has managed to obtain another grant to enable the activity for a further year. Thank you Helen for all your ongoing support and dedication to our charity. 

I would also like to thank Sophie Wood for setting up our Arts and Craft group in September 2021, and to The CUT Theatre who generously funded the first three months sessions via a grant from the Arts Council. More recently, Sophie has set up a Seated Music and Movement group, funded by HDCF at Holton Village Hall. We are about to start a Memory Café, which is a reminiscence group to be held in the CUT Foyer on a weekly basis from May 2022. Many thanks to the CUT for letting us have this public space and to Vicky Hutchinson, committee member and Toni Miller, one of our valuable volunteers who will facilitate this group. 

Our grateful thanks go to Cleo & Simon of the Angel Hotel for their hospitality and hosting of our monthly management meetings in the stables. 

Some time ago, Arlette Smith, one of our supporters approached me with the idea of starting a Ladies’ Lunch club at the Angel Hotel in Halesworth. I am pleased to report that this is going from strength to strength. The ladies meet every third Tuesday of the month and all money raised goes towards supporting our families.

Finally, I would like to thank all the organisations, businesses and individuals that have donated and or raised money on our behalf. A special mention must go to Karen Prime who ran a virtual London Marathon raising almost £2,500 and Danny Mitchell who ran the Chelmsford half marathon and raised £750. A momentous effort on both their parts. 

Last but not least sincere thanks go to the Heveningham Hall Trust for granting us £20,000 to help fund our respite care service and activity groups. 

_**In conclusion I would like to pay tribute to our family carers. They are a source of inspiration to us all.**_ 


**Community Liaison and Respite Care:** Teresa Fyfe is the lead for this Team. 

During 2021–2022, we provided **2,170 hours** of care at a cost of **£42,343** plus another **£7,035** for workshops and Alzheimer’s **.** This year we have supported over **30** families with formal respite care and additionally up to **10** more families with informal respite care. (Informal care is mainly use of our activity groups). 

We continue to use First Choice Home Care and Prestige Nursing + Care Agencies to deliver our Respite Care Service, which is available for all patients registered with Cutlers Hill surgery. 

Referrals can be made via the G.P., First Choice Home Care, Prestige Nursing + Care, District Nurse, Community Matron or self-referral to Teresa Fyfe 01986 875641 (If you are referring someone, you must have their permission). 

**Grants:** Jim Fyfe Is the lead for this Team. 

The Respite Care Service would not be possible without the generosity of grantgiving Trusts, individuals, organisations and charities.  Most of the large grant giving organisations have not included respite in their criteria but hopefully that will change in the near future. 

Throughout the year I have continued to search for new grant opportunities for the Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund. I have been successful in obtaining funding from the Heveningham Hall Trust for £20,000, and received £2,160 from the CUT, Halesworth to enable us to start our Arts and Craft workshops.

However other funding has been sought by applying to local businesses and national organisations. I have applied to Anglian Water, The Prince’s Countryside Fund, Postcode Lottery, Lloyds Bank Foundation, and Magic Little Grants, unfortunately these were unsuccessful, but I can continue to reapply. 

A huge Thank You to all grant givers’ who support Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund as we could not provide our services without you. 

**Fund Raising and Events:** Anna Mickleburgh & Jackie Richardson are the joint lead for this Team as from April 2022. 

Our on-going project -the **Collection Pot scheme** which is now in 25 locations throughout Halesworth, enables people to donate their small change when shopping. Foreign coins or notes can also be put in any of these pots. Taking a **Fill-aJar** home for loose change continues to be a success – more people have generously donated this way! 

Several donations have been received in memory of relatives / friends who have passed on. The fund is very grateful at these sad times that the families think of HDCF. 

Thank you to all those who helped run and support our events to raise funds. 

## **Diary of fundraising and events through 2021 - 2022** 

**During June 2021** the hire of the “i-Chameleon” shop was judged a resounding success and achieved a result of £1076.70 clear of expenses. 

**During July** the first showing of a matinee should have been in July, but again had to be postponed because of Covid. 

**During August** we had an Information Tent in Halesworth Thoroughfare on 14[th] August 2021 to maintain and raise the HDCF profile and to encourage further volunteers for the future to support and assist in our activities. 

**During September** we showed the film “The Intern” – The results of the film were considered satisfactory in view of some continuing uncertainty amongst people regarding the Covid pandemic but thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. 

**During October** the first Arts & Craft session was a resounding success. Karen Prime ran a virtual marathon and raised approx. £2,500. Danny Mitchell ran a half marathon and raised £750.

**During November** the matinee film was the much delayed showing of “Downton Abbey”, which was enjoyed by those who came. 

Janet & Toni put up our decorated tree in St Mary’s for the tree festival. 

**During December** the collection at Halesworth Co-op in partnership with the Rotary Club of Southwold & District went very well. 

A very successful Christmas Lunch was held for all those that helped HdCF during the past year. 

**During January 2022** Covid-19 restrictions peaked again so the 19[th] January 2022 film was postponed. Posters were taken down and replaced with new dated posters at start of March. 

**During February** Jackie Richardson & Anna Mickleburgh joined the committee and took over the reins of the Fundraising & Event Team. 

**During March** the first Ladies Lunch was organised by Arlette Smith and held in the Angel raising £42.50. 

‘The Last letter from Your Lover’ film was shown at the CUT and got good reviews from those who attended. Thanks to Eugenie & Rose who help on the raffle table at the matinees.

## **Donations come from various sources –** 

HdCF events (such as Gigs, Quiz Nights etc. Collection pots & Fill-a-Jars). 

External events, (Rotary - Christmas Co-op collection & Foreign Coins, Huntingfield Arms, Halesworth WI). 

Internet donations (Such as through Paypal). ‘In Memory of’ and Miscellaneous Donations.

## **Finance:** Iris Smith is our Treasurer. 

As you can see from the end of year accounts our income overall is down by £18,000 but our cost for care has remained virtually the same because we no longer have to pay for a dementia support worker from Alzheimer’s society. 

The insurance figure is high because the insurance that we had was not fit for purpose, so we had to purchase new insurance but were unable to reclaim the first premium.

The grants and donations have allowed the fund to cover the cost of the Respite Care Service (RCS), which started in 2014. The fund’s expenses have been maintained at just over 4%, paid by the ‘Friends Of’ donations.

## **Publicity and PR:** John Wood is our lead on Publicity and PR. 

The Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund is kept in the public eye with monthly articles in Halesworth Community News, Halesworth Hoot, The Bugle and other local papers. Posters and flyers are put up around town advertising the fund’s events. 

Tracy Excell continues to put our events and information on social media via Facebook and Twitter – thus quickly reaching a much wider audience of HdCF. 

## **Friends of HdCF:** The co-ordinators of the Friends are Jackie & Dave Rich 

Continuing exposure in the local media has again resulted in an increase in the number of Friends of HdCF, now 103. To make it easier to donate to ‘Friends of’ we now accept monthly payments. Our in-house publication, aptly named ‘The Trumpet’ is sent to more Friends by email to keep costs down.

This specific project is to create awareness within the local business community. Involvement of local businesses would be of great benefit for our future programme development. 

## **To Close:** 

Although no events could be put on, again it was a very busy year as reflected in this report, showing the work of the Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund, especially of the Respite Care Service. The fund continues to provide much needed help and support to those who are living with dementia and those who care for them. 

We thank you all for your help and support which enables us to provide this service for the local community and please keep on supporting us – your help is invaluable.
