Kayd's Somali Woek Feslval 2021 was OLtr
first Ilve-audlenc8 f8stival Since the start of
the covld-19 pandemic. In 2021, we were
able lo deliver an 8-day hybrid festival with
90% of Ilve, socially distanced events.
Kayd's fiagshlp 8v8nl is Somali Week
Festival ISWFI whi¢h plays a dual role In
championing Somall artists and arts and
culture to the Somali community whlle also
providing a Safe, informative and
entertaining plafform for artists and non-
Somali audlence across the UK. SWF Is an
inclusive and innovative space for all
Somalis lo enJoy their Gultural heritage and
right to freedom of expression. bringing
together people from across social and
political divisions that otherwise. in other
contexts remain divided. In October 2021,

during tha UK'S Black History Month, Kayd
proudly presented the 13th Somali Week
Festival tilled "Inspire: insplred by the past,
inspiring the future" that looked beyond th6
pandemic and Imaglned what a post Covid-
19 world would look Ilke. Somalls are one
of the communllles In Britain who suffered
disproportionalely from th8 covid-19
pandemlc, and the programme involvod 8
carefully curated programmo featuring
mental health and wellness experts,
emtsrging and established artists as well as
Ihe healthcare heroes and frontllne flghters
of the past years. SWF 2021 featured a
brand-new Somall-Brltlsh Play'muna
Knows il All" and a new cohort of both
&stabllshed and upcoming artists. The
festival dealt with how artists, a¢livisls and
musicl8ns are responding and reacting to
the global covid-19 pandemic order lo both
highlight the arnazing and brave people In
the community who stepped forward durlng
tttls unprocedented time as well as to look
back on th¢ incredible Somalis who we lost
lo the pandemic. We also looked al the
larger implications of how the BAME
community In the UK has b&&n partlcularly
affected by covld-19 In partlcular the mental
hegllh impllcalions. Highllghls of SWF 2021
Included the book launch of Nadlfa
Mohamed's 8ooker Prizè short-1Ssled novel,
an 8venlng wlth lconlc wrSter Ahmed Abdl
Ggshaan, two sold-oul play performances
and a wlde rang8 of the latest Somall book
launches.
We wer8 able lo host a pre-launch
receplSon at the Brllish Library with a
soclally4islanced audlen¢e of 200. We
also path8r8d with Rich MIX where we
hosted 2 sold out nlghls of a brand-new
British Somali play and held events in
Oxford House, SOAS University as well as
a sold-out Closing concert al The People's
Palacg, Queen Mary Univ8rsily. The
blggest succes8 was that wg were able lo
have visiting gu$sts from abroad,. both the
Hom, mainland Europe and North America,
which Is the stand-out feature that makes
our fesllval unique. Through a combinallon
of carefully selected onllne hybrid events
and 98fely soclal diStan￿d live events we
were abl& to host a full festival that includ8iJ
panel discussions, book launches,
children's enlertainmerjt, traditional dance,
a play, live music and poetry performances
amongst other things. In putting on this
festlval we were able lo su
ort the

ommunity post- lockdown by providing a
safe space for people to once again
interact, discuss important topics and enjoy
high quality arts and culture.
As part of our natlonwide communlty
engagement, we partnered with a local
communlty organisalion in Leicester by
hosting a sisler-8vent during the weekend
of Somali Week Festival In a local
community hub where a number ofour
artists and vislling gLJests from the Horn
