## **Chair’s Report**

_I was so impressed to read this year’s annual report. Last November, the Omicron variant appeared and briefly stopped us running our sessions. However, it is wonderful to read how our fantastic Business Manager, Stacey and all our wonderful volunteers have come together and re-started the sessions and in doing so collected a massive 3 tonnes of waste. Waste, which in the majority of cases, would have ended up in landfill. What an achievement for such a small charity._

_However, we couldn’t function without funding, so I would like to add the Trustees thanks to all our funders, particularly the National Lottery. Their funding has meant we have been able to continue to work and enable around 4000 households this year to come together in their communities and donate items of their waste to help good causes. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Stacey for all her very hard work and dedication. She always gives 100%+ of herself in her role as Business Manager and we are all very grateful for her commitment to Win on Waste._

_My thanks also go to our Trustee team, with the addition of three new trustees, Elaine, Marion and Richard joining David, Harriet and myself, we have a great team of professional and dedicated people to take Win on Waste through to the next stage of its development. Which leads me nicely on to our 10[th] birthday campaign which starts in January: 10 months to 10 years to £10k. In these ten months we aim to raise £10,000 through a variety of events and finish the celebrations with our 10[th] birthday party in October. So plenty to look forward to._

_Best wishes. Monique_

## **Our Thanks to Chris Beale**

_This small space is unable to truly reflect and mention all the ways that Chris Beale, one of our founder members has helped us. He has given us hundreds of hours of his time as our Trustee Treasurer and even after he resigned as a Trustee, Chris continued to help us as our book-keeper. We are indebted to him for his dedication and kindness and for all the ways he helped create our charity, particularly his invaluable advice and guidance. We wish him all the very best for all the other projects he is involved in and to say a very BIG thank you._

## **Our New Trustees**

## _**Marion Burton**_

I first found out about Win On Waste when I saw an advert for a collecting session in a nearby town. Being a keen recycler I just had to attend. Six months later I was helping set up a session in my own local community. Since then things have just gone from strength to strength. I really enjoy meeting the people who bring their waste along. I've also learned that collecting the waste is only the tip of the iceberg.

I'm an ex- science teacher/lecturer with a particular interest in the social and environmental aspects of biology. I love walking in the wild open spaces, especially Dartmoor. At home I'm an amateur lepidopterist, catching the moths the garden, and reporting them to the national data base. These records are good indicators of changes occurring in the environment.

I want to help preserve our planet for future generations. Working with Win On Waste is doing just that - encouraging people to make changes, and helping them on their own recycling journey. Enabling charities and good causes to raise funds from waste is the icing on the cake!

## _**Richard Burton**_

Ever since I was in my teens, I have been passionate about environmental issues and have tried to reduce my environmental impact. I have vivid memories of arguing with shop staff about not needing a plastic bag for every item that I bought. At least that is one thing that has changed for the good over the past twenty years.

All my working life I have been involved in education, teaching science to secondary school aged pupils. Our children were always keen on reducing waste and other environmental issues, and always had the desire to make improvements.

Win on Waste is a great opportunity to bring together these two things. Win on Waste sessions are a great place to discuss, with people of all ages, the ways that we can reduce waste going into land fill and how a bit of thought and inspiration can be used to improve our environmental impact and raise funds for good causes. Where else can you boast about how little is in your bin and people not think you strange!

## **Our New Trustees**

## _**Elaine Langdown—Finances**_

I have been involved in local volunteering for a range of organisations over a number of years, so I am thrilled with the opportunity to combine my expertise in the sector with my love of recycling and taking care of the environment.

Having taken on the role of Treasurer with Win On Waste, I am excited to broaden my own skills and learn more about what we can all be doing to look after our local environment – I can often be found litter picking in my local area, so it’s great to be able to give my time to an organisation that’s working in the environmental sector.

## **Our Retiring Trustee**

## _**Barbara Hicks**_

Barbara has been working as a volunteer with us since 2014, but more recently took on the role of Trustee. She brought her immense passion and enthusiasm for recycling to the role, along with a wealth of experience and a willingness to get involved. We have plenty to thank Barbara for, especially the fact that although no longer a Trustee, she wants to remain as a volunteer Ambassador. Thank you very much Barbara.

## **What We Have Achieved**

- Resumed an additional two Win on Waste sessions, with plans to bring that number to ten Win on Waste sessions in 2023.

- Collected nearly 3 tonnes of waste in 2022, across a range of common consumer items (see graphs below).

- Welcomed nearly 4,000 households to our sessions (an increase of nearly 3,000 on 2021).

- Received over £12,000 in funding from local and national funders including The National Lottery, Dorset Council and The Christchurch Charitable Trust.

- Participated as a recipient charity in the Tesco ‘Blue Tokens’ scheme.

- Helped 30 charities, organisations and social enterprises in need of items for project work or fundraising.

- Revised and published our We Need That! and Decluttering directories.

- Attended local fetes and fairs to raise awareness of Win on Waste and our work.

- Recruited three additional Trustees, three new Ambassadors and 15 new volunteers across our sessions.

## **Comments from some of our donors:**

_“I hate waste and like to think that in this way it is helping others.”_

_“I used to come here before Covid – I like to know that the things I bring are being recycled and reused.”_

_“I am really surprised that anyone can make good use of our rubbish and I am glad that it helps local groups and charities in our area.”_

## **ANNUAL ACCOUNTS 2021-2022**

The Trustees can confirm in accordance with the Charitable Incorporated Organisations (General) Regulations 2012, that at year end, the CIO did not have any outstanding guarantees to third parties, nor any debts secured on assets of the CIO. For a copy of our accounts for 2021/22 please email contact@winonwaste.org.

## **Income**

Our funding comes from a variety of sources, principally grants, donations and fundraising. We would particularly like to thank our key funders for 2021/22 who are listed individually on the following page, Terracycle who provide a financial donation for the waste we process with them, Recycle4Charity who process our printer ink cartridges, Scott Hedger for his continuing donations for postage stamps and the generous donations we received from our supporters at our Win On Waste events during 2022. We would also like to thank Barry Faith for his continuing donation and Moira Ledger and Elaine Langdown for their support in fundraising using secondhand books and media.

## **Expenditure**

Our principal spending is on staff salaries, and in purchasing recycling boxes to process medicines blister packs. We have developed an extensive network of volunteers, groups and activities, including processing a significant amount of waste and this requires considerable support and co-ordination. A large amount of time is also spent on developing our case for support and applying for grant funding to support our core body of work.

**In addition to funding received in 2021/22 Win on Waste also received pro bono marketing support from the Worshipful Company of Marketors (see following page) to the value of £1,179.**

## **Funding Success:**

**In 2021/2022 we give our grateful thanks for support from the following funders, without which we would be unable to run our charity:**

Awarded funding to collect medicines Via Tesco ‘Blue Tokens for publicity and blister packs for responsible recycling. equipment. Awarded funding for our Business Supported our session in Christchurch Manager’s salary, which will run for the next 12 months the Win on Waste project for the next 12 months Provided pro-bono marketing and social media strategy advice as part of their Outreach programme
