At each AGM one third of trustees retire and can be re-elected by the meeting. They retire in rotation, longest serving first.

Trustees conduct reviews of all our compliance documentation including; Health and Safety, Child Protection Policy and an assessment of major risks that may affect our charity. The policies and relevant information are on a public display in the viewing gallery at the stables and available for the volunteers, riders, parents and carers and visitors to read.
The coaches and senior volunteers have attended Safeguarding Courses as part of our policy to keep volunteers and staff aware of our Child and vulnerable Adults Protection Procedures.
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 led to the closure of all our services to participants. A risk assessment was developed and implemented to enable the welfare of ponies to take precedence. Once restrictions were lifted we continued to review the RDA HQ guidelines and we completed 04/08/2020, as one of the first Groups to reopen following approval from RDA HQ. Volunteers returned for Covid-19 induction in the summer months and training. Later in the summer we were able to briefly offer participant sessions in August before the next lockdown in November and December.

We as Trustees are dedicated to the public benefit that our charity delivers to children and adults with disabilities. We provided therapeutic horse-riding lessons to children and adults in groups or on a one-to-one basis depending on their needs throughout the year. One of our aims is to give them an experience that will challenge them to achieve personal goals in an environment that is safe but full of possibilities and training towards future employment.
We have built a relationship with a specialist school, Shepherd’s Down Summary of the main during the first three months of the year. During the pandemic the focus was the welfare of the ponies to maintain their health and fitness ready to return to normal riding sessions when restrictions were lifted. This enabled some of our volunteers to keep working with the ponies improving both their welfare.

Up to 89 volunteers give their time during the week and on Saturdays to assist our riders achieve their personal goals. We also have 11 coaches that are following the RDA coaching pathway. They are a valuable group of volunteers that plan lessons and take lessons for all levels of rider ability.
The volunteers are trained to maintain a high standard of care, so that the riders can achieve their personal goals. We have teenager volunteers too, who, while helping, learn about disabilities and the problems of those less fortunate than themselves and the determination of these riders to overcome their difficulties. Many doing this as part of their Duke of Edinburgh awards. Our Centre Manager is close to completing her training in Equine Facilitated Pyschotraumatology with IFEEL (training was delayed during Covid restrictions) which will enable Broadlands to offer support to adults with servere stress, trauma and PTSD
We will soon be able to offer carriage driving as an activity to broaden the support we give. Providing an equine activity to those unable to ride.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Our strategy:
We are committed as a charity to providing all our riders with an experience that will enable them to achieve goals set by themselves and/or by our team of dedicated coaches and volunteers.
We see the benefit that horse riding can have both physically and mentally in the way they sit and respond to those about them. The progress is recorded and is very rewarding for all.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic we had to close for the spring and summer terms. We were one of the first RDA Groups to reopen and provide a restart programme to welcome our volunteers back safely and then riders that could participate without close contact with volunteers. We managed to expand our volunteer numbers during this period with community activities such as cutting trees, corporate support with workdays completing a list of tasks working outdoors.
We also expanded our services by investing in carriage driving following the closure of the Newbury driving group. This gave Broadlands a new focus during this difficult period with volunteers and staff training the ponies for driving and developing our facilities to accommodate carriages and other equipment. As part of the community involvement, existing but overgrown bridleways were opened to enable Broadlands to access safe carriage driving in our local area. This has benefited not only Broadlands but the wider community too.
When the pandemic forced closure of our services, we had to adapt very quickly to protect our income. We focused on our website with ‘adopt a pony’ which was successful in bridging the immediate income shortfall. We developed an email newsletter, Pony Express, to reach all our supporters and importantly our riders and participants. This enabled us to develop our fundraising relationship with a larger group of supporters. The support has been amazing, and we have been able to meet our income targets to remain ready for the return of riders as soon as we were able to. We were also able to secure grants to keep funds rolling in.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 / 01 / 2020 .
