The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2025.
## **Objectives and Activities**
## **Aims and Objectives**
The objects of North York Moors National Park Trust are to
1. Promote for the benefit of the public the sustainability, conservation, protection and enhancement of the physical, natural and cultural environment of the area known as the North York Moors, including its landscape and wildlife, in particular but not exclusively by:
a) the carrying out of work to improve the landscape, built heritage and environment b) recording local traditions and customs, supporting traditional skills and promoting all arts inspired by the North York Moors
c) supporting community groups and facilities which help achieve these aims.
2. To advance the education of the public in the sustainability, conservation, protection and enhancement of the physical, natural and cultural environment of the North York Moors.
3. To enhance the health and wellbeing of the public through facilitating their connection with nature and the landscape, wildlife, heritage and traditions of the North York Moors
## **Public Benefit**
The trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. Through its programmes the Trust conserves and enhances the natural environment, improves access to nature, supports health and wellbeing, inspires children and young people and strengthens communities.
The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
## **Achievements and Performance**
## **Main Achievements**
## **Natural Health Service for North Yorkshire**
The Natural Health Service for North Yorkshire is an innivative programme led by the Trust using the power of nature to support people to live healthier, more active and connected lives. During this financial year, the Trust secured £100,000 from the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to develop a pilot phase of the programme. The funding enabled engagement and workforce development with professionals and the design of a 10-week nature-based intervention supporting green social prescribing across North Yorkshire to be delivered beyond November 2025.
Key Successes:
- Secured £100,000 through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
- Began delivery of the pilot phase in October 2025.
- Engaged and trained 215 professionals across health, employment, housing, debt, environmental, and criminal justice sectors in how to use nature and Protected Landscapes to support their patients and service users.
- Started development of a 10-week nature-based intervention.
• Built stronger links between Protected Landscapes, health and other sector partners and community organisations to explore how nature can contribute to preventative health.
## **Stepping Stones to Nature**
Stepping Stones to Nature supports children to grow up well through a connection with nature and the North York Moors National Park through regular, hands-on outdoor experiences. During the year the programme expanded beyond school delivery through a new weekend offer, creating a pathway from the classroom into woodland experiences for children requiring additional support.
The programme was funded by the North York Moors National Park Trust, ICL Boulby, Rounton Coffee, and Yor4Good. We work in collaboration with Sylvan Lore and The Wildhaven Project CIC to deliver this work.
## Key Successes:
- Delivered nature-based sessions across five primary schools in Redcar and Cleveland and Middlesbrough.

## **Main Achievements - continued**
- Engaged 305 primary school children through regular term-time sessions, with schools receiving between six and twelve months of weekly engagement.
- Delivered 124 school sessions across 62 delivery days.
- Trialled targeted small-group nature interventions within schools, supporting groups of 4–6 children aged 7–11 with additional needs.
- Launched a weekend programme, delivered in partnership with The Wildhaven Project CIC, providing a stepping stone from school-based engagement into woodland experiences.
- Delivered nine weekend sessions, engaging 10 children through more targeted support.
- Supported children living within communities ranked among the 10% most deprived areas nationally according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation.
• Released an evaluation report which showed: 79% of children reported improved health and wellbeing, while 73% felt calmer as a result of engaging with the programme, 90% of children felt more confident in nature and themselves, 84% of children enjoyed hands-on activities that supported their personal development, and 69% of children said Stepping Stones to Nature helped them do better in lessons.
## **Birds on the Edge**
Birds on the Edge is four year National Lottery Heritage Funded project dedicated to helping both nature and people thrive through conservation, education and recreation.
The project restores and creates vital habitat from ponds and pools to wildflower plots to support the critically endangered Turtle Dove, Yellowhammer, Redstart, and Song Thrush, while also benefiting pollinators and other wildlife.
Working with communities, farmers and land managers, the project enhances the landscapes where woodland meets farmland in the North York Moors National Park and Howardian Hills National Landscape, securing a future for these species.
The project connects people with nature and develops skills through art, play and hands-on conservation. The project works closely with young people from disadvantaged communities, breaking down barriers to nature, improving wellbeing and fostering a lifelong love for the natural world, whilst also engaging schools across both Protected Landscapes, creating feeding stations for bird surveying to support an immersive learning experience.
The project is delivered with the North York Moors National Park Authority, Howardian Hills National Landscape, Arcade Arts, Forestry England, North Yorkshire Council, and Yorkshire Water.
## Key Success:
## Conservation
- Restored three historic ponds, creating valuable habitat for wildlife.
- Created two new ponds to increase habitat availability for priority species.
- Installed five drinking pools to support farmland birds and other wildlife.
- Established 24 supplementary bird feeders across 12 farms within the North York Moors to support declining farmland bird populations.
## Education
- Engaged 175 children across six primary schools through the Harry Spotters Challenge.
- Introduced children to bird identification, migration and the importance of supporting priority bird species through interactive learning.
## Community Engagement
- Delivered eight creative workshops with artist practitioners and two nature connection sessions within the National Park.
- Engaged 23 young people from Bridlington, who explored the landscape through soundscape creation inspired by the project.
- One family residential and four family nature connection sessions delivered in the National Park.
- Supported 23 volunteers to contribute 672 volunteer hours towards bird surveys, habitat creation and management, community engagement and farmer support.
## **Trust Treks**
Trust Treks is a nature-based wellbeing programme supporting men through guided walks and nature connection activities in the North York Moors National Park. The project was funded by You’ve Got This, Tees Foundation, and Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust and worked together with Andy's Man Club Middlesbrough and Teesside Mind.

- Delivered 10 guided Trust Treks within the North York Moors National Park.

- Supported the delivery of the Art of Being project with the North York Moors National Park Authority, securing funding from Point North.
- Charitable partner for the Minds and Miles 2025 cycling challenge.
## **Financial Review**
## **Financial Position**
At 30 November 2025, the Trust's total reserves were £330,289 (2024: £352,3553), of which £49,166 were restricted funds.
Between 1 December 2024 and 30 November 2025, the Trust received £130,907 in funding, grants, donations and other income. The Trust spent £141,141 on charitable and related activities. The charity reported a revaluation loss on its investments of £11,830. This left a net loss of £22,064.
Designated reserves will fund future Trust projects including the Stepping Stones to Nature Project in 2025-2026, and fund the Trust's community grant award and match funding scheme.
The reserves policy states that the equivalent of six months operational costs shall be held as a minimum.
As seen from the balance sheet, the reserves remain broadly consistent with the Trust's reserves policy updated on 29th July 2024.
## **Reserves Policy**
The Trustees have adopted a reserves policy to ensure the Trust remains financially resilient and able to continue delivering against its charitable objectives and for the public benefit. Reserves are maintained to provide financial stability, manage unforeseen costs, support investment in strategic opportunities, and protect the charity against fluctuations in income.
The Trust distinguishes between designated reserves, which have been set aside by the Trustees for specific future commitments, and free reserves, which are unrestricted funds available to support the ongoing operation of the charity. Designated reserves have been established to fund strategic priorities, including the delivery of projects for the public benefit, community engagement, and match funding for projects, where future income cannot be guaranteed.
The Trustees have determined that the Trust should maintain a minimum level of free reserves equivalent to six months' operating expenditure. This level is reviewed annually to ensure it remains appropriate in light of the Trust's activities, financial risks and future plans.
## **Additional Note**
Plans for Future Periods
The Trust will continue developing the Natural Health Service for North Yorkshire, expand Stepping Stones to Nature, complete the Birds on the Edge programme, and diversify income through new corporate partnerships and fundraising to support its sustainability objective.
This year has been one of continued growth and ambition for the Trust. Through the commitment of our staff, trustees, volunteers and partners the Trust has strengthened it’s role in connecting people with nature while delivering meaningful environmental, educational and health outcomes across North Yorkshire. The Board thanks all funders, partners and supporters for making this work possible.

## **Governing Document**
The Trust is a charitable company limited by guarantee. The Board comprises nine trustees: five independent trustees and four appointed from the membership and staff of the North York Moors National Park Authority in accordance with the Articles of Association.
During the year, the Trustees undertook a review of the Trust’s Articles of Association and governance arrangements. The review recommended a number of changes to strengthen the Trust’s governance and ensure that the Board had the appropriate balance of skills and experience to support the Trust’s work. These included changes to the balance of North York Moors National Park Authority and independent trustees, removal of the requirement for the North York Moors National Park Authority Chief Executive to be Chair, and the addition of a charitable object relating to health and wellbeing.
The charity concluded the governance review and made changes to its governing document to reflect its work in relation to health and wellbeing and to clarify certain governance arrangements. The regulated alterations to the Articles of Association were approved by the Charity Commission for England and Wales and subsequently adopted by the Trustees by special resolution on 23 April 2025.
Following these changes, the Trust appointed a new Chair from among the independent trustees. One new trustee was appointed, with a further two trustees joining in the subsequent year.
During the year, Trustees met quarterly and held a strategy day. A trustee skills review was completed and safeguarding arrangements were updated with support from the NSPCC.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 30 November 2025.
## **Responsibilities and Basis of Report**
As the charity trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”).
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
## **Independent Examiner's Statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

## 1. **General Information**
North York Moors National Park Trust is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated in England & Wales, registered number 09861371 and registered charity number 1170387. The registered office is The Old Vicarage Bondgate, Helmsley, York, North Yorkshire, YO62 5BP.
## 2. **Accounting Policies**
## 2.1. **Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements**
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006.
The charitable company is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.
## 2.2. **Incoming Resources**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## 2.3. **Resources Expended**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## 2.4. **Investments**
Investments are a form of basic financial instrument and are initially recognised at their transaction value and subsequently measured at their fair value as at the balance sheet date using the closing quoted mid-market price. The statement of financial activities includes the net gains and losses arising on revaluation and disposals throughout the year. Current asset investments are measured in the same way as fixed asset investments.
## 2.5. **Cash and Cash Equivalents**
Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand and deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and are readily convertible to a known amount of cash with insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.

## 13. **Pension Commitments**
The charitable company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. The assets of the scheme are held separately from those of the charitable company in an independently administered fund.
During the year the charge to the statement of financial activities in respect of defined contribution schemes was £1,711 (2024: £1,297).
At the balance sheet date contributions of £525 (2024: £255) were due to the fund and are included in creditors.

## 15. **Transactions with Trustees**
None of the trustees received any remuneration or any other benefits from an employment with the charity or a related entity during the current or previous year.
No trustee expenses have been incurred.
## 16. **Related Party Disclosures**
The North York Moors Trust has a Memorandum of Understanding with the North York Moors National Park Authority, a closely connected public body. Under this agreement, the Authority provides in-kind support to the Trust, including access to office space, ad hoc administrative assistance, and the equivalent of one day per week of staff time from a Funding Manager which is provided to assist the Trust in delivering its charitable objectives and National Park management plan objectives. The Trust also works in partnership with the Authority on several jointly delivered projects
## 17. **Company limited by guarantee**
The company is limited by guarantee and has no share capital.
Every member of the company undertakes to contribute to the assets of the company, in the event of a winding up, such an amount as may be required not exceeding £1.
