## New Buddha Way

Charity No. 1170368

## Trustee’s Report 2021

The Trustees present their accounts for year ended 31 March 2021.

Trustees who held office during the year were as follows:

Mrs Lynne McNeil Chairperson Dr Geoffrey Hunt Founder & Secretary Mrs Juliet Kimber Trustee Mr Peter Shastri Treasurer Mr John Walter Trustee Ms Caroline Relfe Trustee

## OBJECTIVES AND MANAGEMENT

The objectives of the Trust are:

The aim of New Buddha Way (hereafter ‘NBW’) is to advance the Buddhist religion (also known as ‘the Buddha Dharma’) for the benefit of the public in accordance with the spiritual, religious and ethical framework of ‘The Four Noble Truths’ and ‘The Noble Eightfold Path’, with their particular emphasis on wisdom, non-harm, compassion and peace. To do this for the benefit of the public by means of:

- Teaching, informing, publicising and distributing the Buddhist teachings and way of life in lectures and classes as well as paper and digital media. These are delivered with recognition that the preferred Buddhist way is by ‘making available’ rather than proselytising.

- Manifesting peaceful coexistence and community, through the holding of mainly free activities that are open and available to the public (as well as adherents) including:

   - (a) Community meditation and contemplation sessions,

   - (b) Interfaith dialogue,

   - (c) Meditation retreats,

   - (d) The public celebration of Buddhist festivals,

   - (e) Teaching about Buddhism within schools’ curriculum on request,

   - (f) The support of Buddhist Chaplaincy in the public sector (hospitals, universities, etc.)

   - (g) Occasional pastoral care.

People in poverty will not be excluded from the opportunity to benefit from NBW’s teachings.

## HISTORY

New Buddha Way was founded in 2002 in Guildford as a voluntary association by Prof. Geoff Hunt, Buddhist Chaplain at Surrey University. Since then the group has grown steadily to become the small community that meets today.

REVIEW OF THE YEAR

From March 2020 New Buddha Way had to find a new way to allow participants to meditate together. We did this by using Zoom.

We have met every Sunday since as an online group and have up to fifty people each week with participants old and new able to join us from various locations throughout the globe: USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Malaysia and Germany.

The weekly dharma talk has been recorded and offered free on YouTube.

These sessions as everything we offer at NBW are free.

We have offered an Introductory Session every six weeks to anyone who would like to know more about NBW and follow on with our Sunday Community Sessions.

Our Retreats and Festival days had to be cancelled due to the Covid restrictions.

We also had to cancel our Buddhist Global Relief (BGR) sponsored walk top raise money for the children in countries throughout the poorest parts of the world.

Despite lockdown restriction we raised funds through participant donations and were able to send a contribution to Woking Food Bank and BGR.

Our board of Trustees met via zoom throughout the year.

We continued whenever possible throughout this difficult year to support those requiring a Buddhist funeral or pastoral care according to Covid protocols.

We continue to promote our aims of wisdom, non-harm, compassion and peace.

Signed on behalf of the Trustees:
