Trustees’ Annual Report

The Trustees have pleasure in submitting their annual report and accounts for the year ending 31 August 2020.

The object of the charity is the relief of refugees, particularly, but not exclusively, by the provision of food, clothing and any other goods that are needed. By 'refugees' is meant people who have been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster or those who are in poverty as a consequence of war, persecution or natural disaster.

Following the decision of the trustees set out in last year’s report that all but a nominal part of the current funds should be donated to one or more suitable charities, donations were made to UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) and to International Rescue Committee (Charity Registered Number1065972) to support their appeals for humanitarian aid in the Yemen. These funds came from Aid Behind The Wire’s pre 30 April 2017 fund and pursuant to the second guarantee explained in the notes to the accounts the trustees made a contribution to cover the estimated administration costs which would be incurred by the UNHCR and International Rescue Committee relating to the donations. After these transactions a small balance of £94 remains in the charity’s bank account.

The trustees will keep under review the question of whether and when the charity’s own activities might be reactivated.

Notes to the Accounts

1 Basis of Preparation

The receipts and payments account only shows transactions involving the movement of cash. The statement of assets and liabilities shows the value of assets and liabilities existing at the balance sheet date. Goods donated and on hand at the balance sheet date are not valued for accounts purposes.

2 Restricted and Unrestricted Funds

The categorisation of funds as restricted results from two guarantees given by the trustees. First the trustees committed to meet any travel and accommodation costs until 30 November 2017 and to ensure that any subsequent such costs are not paid out of pre 30 November 2017 donations. Secondly for the initial period of the charity from November 2016 until 30 April 2017, the trustees undertook to meet all the costs of the charity to ensure that donations made would be 100% applied for the benefit of refugees (and to take responsibility for any transport and other costs arising after 30 April 2017 which relate to delivery to refugees of aid donated before 30 April 2017 or purchased from cash donations made before 30 April 2017).
