Rob Howlett), new administrator (Hilary Cox), new church members, new Encounter Homegroups, new community projects, new church gatherings (café-style worship), and most importantly, new life in Jesus Christ. With all COVID restrictions now removed we have been free to worship, pray, read, learn, grow, and fellowship together in our church building, and re-launch all our church activities, as well as fully utilise the building for community activities again. 2022 has not been without its challenges but we continue to seek the will of God for our church and the community of Burnham on Sea and Highbridge with the certain hope our Christian faith offers. We feel these are exciting times and praise God for all He is doing in and through our lives and for the opportunities that we have to share the love of Jesus with our wider communities; thank you God. ## Governance, Membership, and Leadership Team ## **Governance** We continue to enjoy full membership and the support of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) and WEBNET, whose advice, guidance and expertise has been invaluable during the COVID pandemic. We also continue to be a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and fully comply with all the regulations outlined by the Charity Commission. ## **Church Membership and Family** Church membership has grown throughout the year to 56 members (+8) as well as growth with in-person regular attendees. We continue to broadcast most of our Sunday gatherings via YouTube with average weekly views of 50+. We welcome all our newcomers and look forward to sharing life, discipleship, and worship with you. However, in May, our dear friend Vicky Sutton-Thompson was ‘called home’, as was Elizabeth Williams in December. ## **Leadership Team** The personnel of the leadership team have remained the same during 2022. However, having completed his ministerial formation and degree in Mission and Theology at Bristol Baptist College, we welcomed Revd Rob Howlett as our full-time minister in September and look forward to continuing working with him over the coming years. Rob shall remain under the watchful eye of the college and WEBNET as he completes his NAMs (Newly Accredited Minister) over the next 3 years. Following the appointment of Jade Zerk as Minister at Hope Baptist Church and in-line with our commitment to closely work with Hope, Jade and Rob continue to enjoy the opportunity to attend and contribute to both churches’ Leadership and Church Meetings. Both churches also work closely together while sharing a Safeguarding Team led by Sarah Taylor, pulpit swaps, and special shared events. 2 Dedicating time to prayer continues to be our priority as a Diaconate as we try and lead the church through these exciting times. As a team, we feel God has clearly spoken throughout the year, encouraging us to focus our minds and resources in serving the wider community and we continue to seek ways in which we can honour God and share the love of Jesus with our neighbours. Based upon the early church we discover in Acts 2, we hope to be a praying, sharing, serving, and loving community of disciples. ## Sunday Gatherings Hearing God speak through the Bible is paramount to our Sunday gatherings. While aiming to be a ‘multi-voice’ church, we have welcomed guest speakers from other churches and organisations throughout the year as well as encouraged others to lead the gatherings, and times of prayer. In May we were able to gather with the whole UK Baptist family at the BU Assembly via YouTube which proved to be an amazing time of shared worship, prayer, and praise. During 2022 we introduced a monthly ‘café-style’ worship gathering with an ‘all-age’ and interactive approach to worship. Despite a rocky start to this new style of worship, we are slowly honing our aims and objectives and continue to receive (mostly!) positive feed-back. Our aim is to continue expressing our worship in new and exciting ways that are engaging, transforming, and approachable for all the community. While we have continued to take a cautious approach to our response to COVID and recognise that meeting again face-to-face is a challenge for some people, we have enjoyed welcoming most people back to the building as well as plenty of new faces. We trust that God will continue to bless our new ‘hybrid’ church as we seek His face, and His will for His church. ## Other Church Activities ## **Alpha** In September we launched a new Alpha course on Tuesday evenings, with 15 regular attendees. Alpha continues to bless our church and wider community as we explore faith, life, and meaning together in a safe, and encouraging space. It is our proposal that we continue with this during 2023 – watch this space! ## **Community Projects** With our continued commitment to our local community, we have enjoyed opportunities to maintain our work with a number of other organisations including Safe Families, Foodbank, and Food Pantry, as well as offer financial support to InHope (Bristol), Project Ruth, and The Leprosy Mission. We also enjoyed celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a street party and lunch, shared with The Methodist Church. 3 Revd. Rob Howlett is also a founding trustee of The Waffle Hub Community Café, a project that launched in 2022 with the local Methodist Church which is designed to alleviate loneliness, isolation, and food poverty. We continue to take an active role the community garden based at Hope Baptist Church and the bumper crop of fruit and vegetables this year was enjoyed by many families who need the support of Foodbank. The success of these projects has been a real blessing to our community, and we must thank all the volunteers who tirelessly support the work. ## **Encounter Homegroups** In September we re-launched our homegroups and increased them to four groups meeting at various locations around Burnham on Sea and Highbridge. While following the Sunday sermon series the groups have studied ‘Galatians’ as well as provided pastoral care, opportunities for prayer, and fellowship for about 25 members. ## **Encounter Prayer** Prayer is at the centre of our Christian walk and Dawn and her team continue to provide creative and encouraging ways we can pray together as a church family as well as offering an open door to the wider community. ## **Fabric Team** Maintaining the premises of the Baptist Church is like painting the famous Forth Bridge. The job is never finished, it merely continues. We are very blessed to have volunteers who give so much time, effort, and expertise in maintaining the church. Over the last months, we have had to focus on mainly plumbing and heating issues. Our system is truly antiquated and has needed lots of patching, modifying, and sticking back together. As we work on our plans to develop the use of the church buildings, so we hope to improve the plumbing and heating in line with these plans. We want to ensure there is logic to any development so that we are not spending money now on an item that may be changed in the near future. Given the age and nature of the church buildings, we feel it is testament to the volunteers that the Church is in such fine shape. Our sincere thanks to you all!! ## **Lighthouse club** 2022 saw changes in leaders, a lack of volunteer helpers and children not attending regularly. The decision was taken in the summer to pause the club till the end of the year. Activities for children who came to church were made available each week so they could stay in the service. There was a feeling of shame from the congregation that the children were not given their own teaching session. More helpers came forward and a new Lighthouse club is opening in January 2023. Praise the Lord! 4 ## **Meeting Place** The Meeting Place continues to open its doors to welcome people for tea, coffee, and cake as well as hear from a local speaker, including the very popular Leprosy Mission, Open Doors, and John Strictland (local historian). As numbers continue to grow, we praise God for the work he is doing to help the lonely and isolated members of our community through the work of the Meeting Place, led by Eileen Wood and Suzanne Davis. ## **Tiny Tots** Tiny Tots went from strength to strength in 2022. There were some changes in leaders but this did not affect the running of the morning. There was a good regular attendance of 20+ families (40+ children). It was pleasing to see some Tiny Tots families at our Christmas nativity service. Going forward it is planned to have occasional after school sessions for the families. God is good! We would like to thank all of those involved who support all the church activities, especially the unsung heroes from behind the scenes – Fabric Team, Welcome Team, Finance and Administration Team, Counting Team, Catering Team, Flower Team, Communion Prep Team, Tech Team, Lighthouse Club leaders, and the Caretakers (Jackie & Chris Elswood, and Mike Loveridge). The church would not function without all your help and support, and we are eternally grateful. ## Looking Ahead - 2023 We look forward with hope for 2023. Plans include: the continuing and developing of our missional and community projects with Foodbank, Food Pantry, Safe Families, Project Ruth, The Waffle Hub Community Café, Open Doors, The Leprosy Mission, InHope, and others; the expansion of the community garden at Hope Baptist Church; running Alpha and Youth Alpha courses; to develop a youth program and drop-in service accessible to everyone; to review and start to re-develop the use of our church building to include greater opportunities to share this amazing resource; community lunches - including Christmas lunch ; family BBQ’s and more social events for everyone in our community. Our sincere thanks to you all!! ## **Lighthouse club** 2022 saw changes in leaders, a lack of volunteer helpers and children not attending regularly. The decision was taken in the summer to pause the club till the end of the year. Activities for children who came to church were made available each week so they could stay in the service. There was a feeling of shame from the congregation that the children were not given their own teaching session. More helpers came forward and a new Lighthouse club is opening in January 2023. Praise the Lord! 4 ## **Meeting Place** The Meeting Place continues to open its doors to welcome people for tea, coffee, and cake as well as hear from a local speaker, including the very popular Leprosy Mission, Open Doors, and John Strictland (local historian). As numbers continue to grow, we praise God for the work he is doing to help the lonely and isolated members of our community through the work of the Meeting Place, led by Eileen Wood and Suzanne Davis. ## **Tiny Tots** Tiny Tots went from strength to strength in 2022. There were some changes in leaders but this did not affect the running of the morning. There was a good regular attendance of 20+ families (40+ children). It was pleasing to see some Tiny Tots families at our Christmas nativity service. Going forward it is planned to have occasional after school sessions for the families. God is good! We would like to thank all of those involved who support all the church activities, especially the unsung heroes from behind the scenes – Fabric Team, Welcome Team, Finance and Administration Team, Counting Team, Catering Team, Flower Team, Communion Prep Team, Tech Team, Lighthouse Club leaders, and the Caretakers (Jackie & Chris Elswood, and Mike Loveridge). The church would not function without all your help and support, and we are eternally grateful. ## Looking Ahead - 2023 We look forward with hope for 2023. Plans include: the continuing and developing of our missional and community projects with Foodbank, Food Pantry, Safe Families, Project Ruth, The Waffle Hub Community Café, Open Doors, The Leprosy Mission, InHope, and others; the expansion of the community garden at Hope Baptist Church; running Alpha and Youth Alpha courses; to develop a youth program and drop-in service accessible to everyone; to review and start to re-develop the use of our church building to include greater opportunities to share this amazing resource; community lunches - including Christmas lunch ; family BBQ’s and more social events for everyone in our community.
