## Trustee Report 2021

2021 – well what a year! It most certainly has proved to be one of the most challenging years as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect all our lives. Learning to live and adapt to all the changes has been very difficult and not without its problems. Yet through prayer and trial and error (perhaps a lot of error!) we have continued to be a growing, worshipping, praying, and loving community; truly blessed by God; meeting at least once a week either on-line or in person; seeking the will of God for our Church and the community of Burnham On Sea and Highbridge. It has been a difficult year for us all and we have faced many challenges, but throughout it all we have been wonderfully reminded of our reliance on our loving Creator God. We praise God for all He is doing in and through our lives and the opportunities that we have to share the love of Jesus with our wider communities.

## Governance, Membership, and Leadership Team

We continue to enjoy full membership and the support of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) and WEBNET, whose advice, guidance and expertise has been invaluable during the COVID pandemic.

Church membership continues to remain fairly static, welcoming 2 new members during the year. However, Janet Davey and David Phillips were ‘called home’ during 2021 as well as Sandra Nash, a dear friend of the church. Their generosity, wisdom, kindness, tireless service, and sense of humour will be deeply missed by us all. In November 2021, Hilary and Paul Venn moved to Bradford on Avon. Although they currently continue in church membership their influence, teaching, pastoral care, worship, and leadership will be greatly missed and we pray for God’s continued blessing on them both as they start a new season in their lives together.

Following the appointment of Jade Zerk as Minister at Hope Baptist Church and in-line with our commitment to closely work with Hope, Jade and Rob continue to enjoy the opportunity to attend and contribute to both churches’ Leadership and Church Meetings. Both churches also work closely together while sharing a Safeguarding Team led by Sarah Taylor.

Dedicating time to prayer continues to be our priority as we try and lead the church through these challenging times. Yet as a team, we feel God has clearly spoken throughout the year, encouraging us to focus our minds and resources in serving the wider community and we continue to seek ways in which we can honour God and share the love of Jesus with our neighbours. Based upon the early church we discover in Acts 2, we hope to be a praying, sharing, serving, and loving community of disciples.

In March 2021 Brian Beaven, Dennis Davey, Maureen Harmer, and Paul Venn stepped down from the Leadership Team while Sophia Hurley stepped down in November 2021. Their wisdom, passion, and dedication are greatly missed by the team and we thank them for their service to the Church over the many years. We continue to hold them in prayer as they seek God’s will for their new seasons in service to the Kingdom and pray God’s blessing upon them and their families. Yet we also know God has new and exciting plans for the Leadership Team

2

and the church as we welcome Graham Brown (Treasurer), Jane Silk, and Sarah Taylor to the team. We know their wisdom, giftings, and passion for church will be invaluable over the coming years.

In September 2021 the church called Rob Howlett to be their full-time minister to start in September 2022 after he completes his ministerial formation and degree in Mission and Theology at Bristol Baptist College.

## Sunday Gatherings

Hearing God speak through the Bible is paramount to our Sunday gatherings. While aiming to be a ‘multi-voice’ church, we have welcomed guest speakers from other churches and organisations throughout the year as well as encouraged others to lead the gatherings, and times of prayer. Embracing technology, we were able to gather with the wider church family in March 2021 as the whole UK Baptist family gathered for worship at the BU Assembly via YouTube. It was an amazing time of shared worship, prayer, and praise, and we hope to be able to do it again in 2022.

For a number of reasons, including COVID, it has not been possible to hold our monthly Ignite Family Gatherings during 2021. As we learn from Ecclesiastes 3, ‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens’, and we have decided to put on hold our Ignite activities but shall instead continue with a quarterly ‘café style’ church gathering which will hope to offer an informal time of ‘worship and conversation’ for all our community.

While the building remained closed for the first half of 2021, we have been blessed to be able to meet in person since July, as well as continue broadcasting our gatherings live on YouTube. A huge thank you to the technical team who have made this possible. Numbers of people attending church in the building continue to grow and it has been wonderful to welcome so many new faces to our church family – including a donkey at our Christmas gathering!

While we continue to take a cautious approach to our response to COVID and recognise that meeting again face-to-face is a challenge for some people, we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the building as soon as possible. However, we trust that God will continue to bless our new ‘hybrid’ church as we seek His face, and His will for His church.

## Other Church Activities

Despite the pandemic, the church has not been quiet – far from it. As we have started again to gather in the church building for worship, so our regular church groups have started again – Wednesday and Thursday home-groups, monthly prayer meetings, church members’ meetings, and Lighthouse Club for children.

With our continued commitment to our local community, we have enjoyed opportunities to work with a number of other organisations including Safe Families, Foodbank, and Food

3

Pantry, as well as offer financial support to InHope (Bristol) and The Leprosy Mission. The success of these projects has been a real blessing to our community, and we must thank all the volunteers who tirelessly support the work, especially Sue Williams, Helen Mitchell, Wendy Westwood, and Terry Came.

Opportunities to serve our community through our new ‘Garden Rescue Team’ (led by Graham Brown and Jane Silk) has proved very popular, helping several people with their gardening needs as well as setting up a community garden and allotment in conjunction with Hope Baptist Church. And once again we were able to cook and deliver a Christmas dinner this year to 25 people in the Burnham and Highbridge area. We are really encouraged how the church has become more outward looking over the past years and look forward with excitement for more opportunities to share the love of Jesus with our local community.

The church family agreed, at the beginning of 2021, to stop financially supporting Living Waters in Albania by 2022, but instead support Project Ruth in Romania – an educational charity supporting Roma families that Wendy Westwood is a trustee of. We continue to pray for Enea and his family in Albania and pray God’s blessing on all their activities, while we look forward to working closely with Project Ruth.

In August we re-launched our Tiny Tots program with a successful family BBQ enjoyed by 50+ people from our community. Tiny Tots continues to grow with up to 45 children, plus their families, gathering every Tuesday for worship, fun, stories, and games. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who make this such a special gathering, especially to Kaye Burton for her vision for the group and Sophia Hurley, Ann Storey, Shirley Schofield, Linda Sadler, Wendy Westwood, and Frances Hawkins who all run the group together. We are also tremendously grateful to Jenny Williams who has overseen the group for many years but has now retired. Thank you so much Jenny for all your hard work over the years and we pray God’s blessing and peace upon you.

Also in September, our very popular ‘Meeting Place’ re-opened its doors to welcome people for tea, coffee, and cake as well as hear from a local speaker, including the very popular Leprosy Mission. As numbers continue to grow, we praise God for the work he is doing to help the lonely and isolated members of our community through the work of the Meeting Place, led by Eileen Wood and Suzanne Davis.

In October we launched our new quarterly church magazine, Outlook, under the supervision of Jane Silk and Leanne Swift. Outlook aims to follow the themes of our preaching plan while considering and exploring the impact Christianity has in our wider community and hopes to reach a wider audience than just the church family by also publishing on the church website as a blog and including content from other local churches and organisations.

Prayer is at the centre of our Christian walk and in December we re-launched our monthly prayer gatherings with a wonderful Advent prayer room, created by Dawn Brown. Dawn and her team continue to provide creative and encouraging ways we can pray together as a church family as well as offering an open door to the wider community.

4

We would like to thank all of those involved who support all the church activities, especially the unsung heroes from behind the scenes – Fabric Team, Welcome Team, Finance and Administration Team, Counting Team, Catering Team (led by Sarah Taylor), flower rota (June Westlake and Jean Stanley), communion preparers (Rob & Pam Singleton, and Martin & Julie Hawketts), Tech Team, Lighthouse Club leaders, and the Caretakers (Jackie & Chris Elswood, and Mike Loveridge). The Church would not function without all your help and support, and we are eternally grateful.

## Looking Ahead - 2022

Throughout all the difficulties we have faced in 2021, we know God has a plan for Burnham On Sea Baptist Church. It is a plan for us to prosper and grow. It is a plan to enable us to share the Gospel and share his love with our community. It is a plan to deepen and strengthen our reliance on him. It is a plan for greater discipleship and a greater knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus.

With this in mind, we look forward with hope for 2022. Plans include: the continuing and developing of our community projects with Foodbank, Food Pantry, Safe Families, Project Ruth, and others; the expansion of the community garden at Hope Baptist Church; running a joint Alpha course with Hope Baptist Church; to develop a youth program and drop-in service accessible to everyone; to review and start to re-develop the use of our church building to include greater opportunities to share this amazing resource; to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee with our community; family BBQ’s and more social events for everyone in our community. But most of all, our plan is to see the Kingdom of God grow in Burnham on Sea and Highbridge.
