ADCC AGM 29 March 2023

Chair’s Report

A year ago (and it seems difficult to believe it’s only a year ago) we were just coming out of two significant events.

First of course COVID - it seems so long ago now, but it really was only a year ago, that the country really started to open up again after two years of varying degrees of lockdown.

The second the refurbishment of the large hall - the project we had been working towards for such a long time, and which (as is quite usual for building projects) took a lot longer to complete than we had hoped. Nevertheless, finished it was and the results were very well received by all. The new heating and lighting is very much more effective. The lights are brighter and more controllable and they don’t need time to warm up. The heating warms up very quickly and can be controlled effectively to warm the whole hall or just specific zones. The new store room is much better organised and the small meeting room has proved ideal for some small meetings as its name might suggest.

So this year has been a year of new beginnings - a new beginning to the life of the village coming out of COVID times and a new beginning for the hall.

The refurbishment programme started out in about 2016 with Phase 1 (the kitchen), then moved on to Phase 2 (the small hall) and ended with Phase 3 (the large hall and side rooms).

Of course we’ve got the bit between our teeth now so we’ve dreamt up some more phases (of which more later). We also have new beginnings with a number of new faces on the committee and a new team in charge of the weekly café.

It would be good at this point to express my (or all our) sincere thanks to Mike and Jenny who have led the hall and the café so well over the past few years and we wish them well for the future as they take a well-earned rest and explore new activities.

Much of the refurbishment that has gone on was of course grant funded and Mike successfully shepherded our applications through the labyrinthine processes that many grant funding bodies require, but many of the grants needed some seed money to be provided by our own fund raising activities and much of this money came from the café.

We also have a new booking system operated by our new booking secretary which we hope will be easier to manage than the system we were using earlier.

We have a number of regular events such as Pauline Ireland’s exercise classes and Jackie Watts’ yoga class each week. Other regular users include the Parish Council, LAHAS, Highlights and Stewart Short’s successful arts events. Sadly the Ladies’ Group has come to its end, as have the uniformed groups.

A recent innovation has been the movie nights which have been very well received and of course there is another one of these later this evening.

Last year’s village show was a huge improvement over the previous years’ which were very much restricted because of COVID. And we’re very much looking forward to this year’s show.

Last year also we held a successful event for the Queen’s Jubilee and we’re looking forward to holding a similar event for the King’s Coronation at the beginning of May, with a bring and share tea on the Sunday afternoon.

Looking to the future, we have two projects lined up: first the resurfacing of the car park has begun, and the improvements to date are making parking adjacent to the hall much easier and more pleasant. We hope to finish the rest of the car park “real soon now”. And second the recladding of the building which we are calling Phase 4 of the refurbishments and which we hope to get started on later in the year. I am happy to report that we already have two grants agreed for Phase 4: £1,000 from the John Laing Charitable Trust, and £10,000 from Eden Community Fund, and Graham has a number of additional grants in the pipeline. As before, the Café will also contribute significantly to this phase – probably well over £4.000 in total, so we are quite hopeful or being able to get started quite soon.

Looking further ahead what will probably be our final Phase 5 will look to improve the entrance lobby and kiosk and toilet facilities and shower facilities.

And speaking of the shower facilities brings me to the Pool, which had an exceptionally good year in 2022. There were lots of private bookings as well as Aquarobics and four schools using the facility. Using Ticketsource for bookings and season tickets was a great success. And we had the foresight to buy the chemicals we needed up front, so we didn’t suffer the shortages other pools around the country did. Some of the other pools in the area are following our lead on both chemical purchasing and online booking. The Pool will open for the 2023 season on 13[th] May.

All in all, quite a good set of new beginnings. If anyone has any ideas for other ways in which we can use the hall for the benefit of the people of Askham and District do please let us know.
