ASKHAM and DISTRICT COMMUNITY CENTRE CHAIRMAN’s ANNUAL REPORT 2021
Due to varying Covid 19 restrictions the Centre did not re-open until May and this was to facilitate the election for the Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner. The previous months of closure were not wasted however as numerous small maintenance jobs were completed and grant applications were submitted to enable Phase Three of our development plan to commence in 2022.
Following full re-opening with infection prevention measures, our bookings increased with a wide range of activities including regular keep fit classes, pilates, orchestra rehearsals, fell running competitions, art exhibitions and celebratory family parties. The Askham Coffee Shop was able to resume its regular Tuesday morning opening raising much needed funds for the hall and providing a weekly meeting opportunity for the community. The swimming pool re-opened in June and thanks in part to some better weather and a new online booking system, it was very well attended throughout the season. The deterioration caused by the 2020 enforced closure was rectified thanks to a Government restart grant. The annual Village Show was an immense success with a very large number of entries of outstanding quality. Towards the end of November the hall was hired for a pre-Christmas arts and crafts fayre. It was well attended by stallholders but the weather was appalling and visitor numbers were very low. Notwithstanding the disappointment, the hall has been booked again for the same event in 2022. It was immensely disappointing to have to cancel the annual Christmas Lunch, the day before it was due to take place, owing to an upsurge in the number of people infected with the omicron variant of the Covid 19 virus. Most of the fresh food purchased was delivered to a local foodbank and the majority of customers donated their lunch ticket costs to the Centre. The Centre closed on 21[st] December but the Trustees decided to begin the refurbishment of the main hall and adjoining store rooms and not re-open until the work had been completed. I wish to thank the Trustees for their commitment to the Community Centre and to all those who give both their time and expertise either regularly or occasionally to make the Askham and District Community Centre such an outstanding facility.
