**THE HANDS UP PROJECT CHARITY COMMISSION REPORT APRIL 2021-APRIL 2022**

## **WEEKLY LINK UPS AROUND THE WORLD**

- Schools across Palestine linked up in weekly sessions with volunteers across the world for storytelling, conversation and cultural exchange through the shared medium of the English language. This meant that up to 500 children were benefiting every week meeting new people, sharing their lives with their peers and using creativity and self-expression to develop mutual understanding.

## **REMOTE THEATRE**

- Young Palestinians performed their groundbreaking lockdown plays to international audiences. Not only did they perform with their peers in Palestine but in a new development, they began to perform with a cast from around the world. On Nelson Mandela day, the cast included children from Argentina, Spain, Romania and Palestine.

## **BRITISH COUNCI ELTons AWARD FOR LOCAL INNOVATION**

In November 2021, HUP won the prestigious British Council ELTons award for Local Innovation. The Teamteaching for Facebook Live initiative was developed in partnership with UNRWA Gaza in response to Palestinian school closures during the first semester in 2020/2021 These Palestinian English Curriculum sessions (each accessed by many hundreds of Grades 1-9 learners and their families) were led jointly by a Palestinian English teacher and an English teacher in another country.

●

_"The team-teaching aspect of this has taken this initiative to an innovative level."_

## **PUBLICATIONS**

- The Hands Up Project published 2 books; _Doing Remote Theatre_ , a comprehensive guide to performing remote theatre as part of a programme of second language learning which contains 28 short plays written especially for remote performance by well-known names in the world of ELT, and _Grandma’s Bird,_ a bilingual Arabic-English children’s story, written & illustrated by young Palestinian artist, Malak Mattar.

- The Play as a Living, Breathing Ever-Evolving Entity - an article co-written by Palestinian teacher Hanaa Mansour and Hands Up Project founder Nick Bilborough was published in the journal _Humanising Language Teaching_ https://www.hltmag.co.uk/jun21/play-as-a-living

## **VISIT TO PALESTINE**

Nick Bilborough’s long-awaited and much-postponed trip to Palestine finally took place in January/February 2022. He was able to visit schools throughout Palestine and to deliver the prize of 74 tablets to the winners of the 2019 Remote Theatre competition to ensure that the children can continue to write their inspiring plays. He also gave the children and their teachers copies of _Popcorn,_ the book published by HUP containing their plays.

He was also able to place the ELTons trophy in the hands of the rightful winners, the teachers who planned and executed the brilliant initiative.

- **Independent** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have

- **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination (other than that disclosed below) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

   - the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

   - the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

   - the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

Due to the nature of the charity, it is not always possible to obtain receipts for individual items of expenditure while in Palestine. On that basis it is has not been possible to verify every item of cash expenditure sample tested to the underlying documentation. Total petty cash expenditure in Palestine in the year ended 31 March 2022 was £1,791.20.

I have no other concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
