No-one could have anticipated the cost-of-living crisis. This has had an impact on the women we seek to serve, our staff and our donors. As with many small charities Beloved has faced the twin challenges of increased outgoings in rent, salaries and heating at the same time as rising demands on our services. We are thankful for the continued generous support we receive from local churches, organisations and individuals. The financial donations and practical gifts of toiletries, food parcels and hampers have been greatly appreciated. To all the volunteers who accompany our Women’s Case workers on visits and trips -thank you, our service could not function without you. Two senior members of staff were on maternity leave for most of this year and we are hugely grateful for how remaining staff stepped up to fulfil their roles and ensure continuity of the service. We have also seen staff retire or move on to other organisations, and are proud that they were able to secure more senior positions elsewhere. I took over as Chair of Beloved in January this year and want to express my thanks to Nigel Ring who previously, so ably Chaired Beloved. My thanks also to new folk stepping up to be Trustees of the Board. Despite the changes and financial challenges, I am delighted that Beloved has managed to continue to deliver our core services of parlour visits and casework. Beloved’s unique selling point is offering gift bags, friendship and prayer to the women working in massage parlours & brothels around our city, to remind the women of their dignity and help them flourish and leave the work if that is their wish. As this report will illustrate, Beloved provides so much more and we have a vision to do more still. I commend this report to you. Chair of the Board of Trustees REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES ## **Objects of the charity** The Object of Beloved is to relieve poverty and hardship, in particular by working with those involved in prostitution or at risk of being drawn into prostitution as a result of unemployment, poverty, deprivation, financial hardship, ill-health, or disability and to do so: - (i) for the public benefit; - (ii) throughout the United Kingdom, - (iii) in pursuance of Christian principles; and - (iv) in accordance with the Statement of Faith. ## **Our mission** To support women working in any area of the indoor sex industry in Bristol and the surrounding areas, promoting the dignity and self worth of every woman that we meet. Whether they are remaining in the industry, seeking to leave or have already left, we walk alongside women, raising their awareness of alternative opportunities and supporting them to address any physical, emotional, economic and spiritual needs they may identify. ## **Governance** Beloved is a CIO (number: 1170261), registered in 2016. The policy and operating decisions of the charity rest with the Trustees who meet regularly to monitor the activities of the organisation. New Trustees are appointed by the existing body of Trustees in accordance with Paragraph 11.1 of the Constitution. ## **Review of Activities** Our support for women working in the indoor sex industry involves the following key elements: ## **Parlour visits** Meeting with women on a twice monthly basis inside the massage parlours. Our team of volunteers and caseworkers offer time to talk alongside signposting to local organisations such as specialist sexual health clinics, debt advice, housing support and mental health services. ## **One-to-one casework** Supporting women to access accommodation, employment, benefits, sexual health services and primary care services as well as other specialist support within Bristol. We are also able to assist women with issues such as EU settlement, provide access to short-term emergency financial assistance and liaise with our network of local supporters to meet any other needs the women may have. ## **Well-being work** Over the last year, we have been able to support the women by delivering a series of well-being sessions. REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES ## Partnerships ## Churches We continue to maintain strong connections to churches within the Bristol area. Local churches continue to support us through prayer, volunteering, regular financial giving, delivering wellbeing activities, providing food packs and gifts at Christmas and Easter. ## Safeguarding As part of our regular outreach, we support local statutory services to reach some of the most vulnerable and hidden women, for example, those working in pop up premises. ## Staff Well-being Our team of caseworkers are highly valued and we recognise the frequent exposure they have to trauma. As such we have a regular programme of well-being days and provide monthly clinical supervision, external to Beloved, allowing staff to take a break from the challenging nature of their work. We also provide group supervision for our volunteers on a termly basis. ## Multi-Agency Working We fit into a broader local and national context, working in direct partnership with other women's organisations across Bristol as well as statutory organisations to ensure the women we support are able to access the services that they need. ## Advisory Board We are guided by the women we support to ensure that the service we deliver is one that meets their needs. Our advisory board meets quarterly, providing a forum for women to express their needs, advise on what they think is going well and to make suggestions for improvement. REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES ## Looking Forward We stand in the gap for those women whose voices society refuses to listen to. We show love and compassion to those who are disregarded and dehumanised. We are led and guided by women who have experienced the trauma and pain that the sex industry can bring. We continue to move forward. As we move forward into a new financial year, we know we still have a long way to go in overcoming the ongoing challenges that the women we support, face. Please join with us as we pursue big dreams for our Beloved women. Housing- We would love to have a place to offer women who are ready to leave the massage parlours but cannot access the usual housing pathways due to having no recourse to public funds. Financial Support- As women continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis alongside a reduction in their income, we want to be able to continue to offer access to our hardship fund. Employment- Many of the women we support have gaps on their CV's which makes it difficult to gain secure employment despite having the necessary skills. Over the next year we want to work towards developing secure employment pathways, where women are able to progress in their chosen careers. Outreach- This is where Beloved began. We know that more women are working online, from their own homes and in new premises that are emerging across the city. We want to continue to develop and adapt our outreach model so that we can offer support to as many women who want to access it. REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES ## **Women's Voices** The women we serve are the most important part of what we do at Beloved, they are the reason we exist. It is essential that their stories are heard. Raquel is a woman who was trafficked into the UK for the sole purpose of being exploited within the commercial sex industry. Beloved volunteers met her on parlour outreach visits and she began to regularly engage with prayer and one to one support outside of the parlour. With the support of Beloved and another charity, Raquel was able to leave the parlour. However she quickly entered an abusive relationship, attacking her self esteem and putting her at risk of serious harm. Beloved continued to support her during this time, creating safety plans and providing financial support as well as ongoing emotional and spiritual support. Raquel eventually made the decision to leave the abusive relationship and we have since been able to support her into new accommodation, attendance on an employability programme and most recently, into full time employment. Although women's journeys are never a straight line, we are present for it all, the highs and lows, wins and losses. REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES ## Finance The charity received £150,384 in the reporting period and total expenditure was £139,826. Unrestricted funds at the end of the reporting period were £45,301. This year has brought considerable financial challenges for Beloved. However, with a reduction in the size of the staff team, and an increased utilisation of volunteer skills, we have managed to continue to deliver both our outreach and casework services within budget. Although we did not meet our income projections (income was lower than budget) for the financial year 22/23, we reduced our expenditure to ensure that Beloved was able to continue to deliver the essential support to the women who use our services. Towards the end of the financial year, our fundraiser who we had contracted to write funding bids, moved on to another role.
