BELOVED REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE 12 MONTH PERIOD ENDED 31 MARCH 2022
The Trustees have pleasure in submitting the Report and Accounts for the 12-month period from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022.
Objects of the charity
The Object of Beloved is to relieve poverty and hardship, in particular by working with those involved in prostitution or at risk of being drawn into prostitution as a result of unemployment, poverty, deprivation, financial hardship, ill-health, or disability and to do so:
(i) for the public benefit;
(ii) throughout the United Kingdom,
(iii) in pursuance of Christian principles; and
(iv) in accordance with the Statement of Faith.
Our mission
To support women working in any area of the indoor sex industry in Bristol and the surrounding areas, promoting the dignity and self worth of every woman that we meet. Whether they are remaining in the industry, seeking to leave or have already left, we walk alongside women, raising their awareness of alternative opportunities and supporting them to address any physical, emotional, economic and spiritual needs they may identify.
Governance
Beloved is a CIO (number: 1170261), registered in 2016.
The policy and operating decisions of the charity rest with the Trustees who meet regularly to monitor the activities of the organisation.
New Trustees are appointed by the existing body of Trustees in accordance with Paragraph 11.1 of the Constitution.
Review of Activities
Our support for women working in the indoor sex industry involves the following key elements
Parlour visits:
Meeting with women on a twice monthly basis inside the massage parlours. Our team of volunteers and caseworkers offer time to talk alongside signposting to local organisations such as specialist sexual health clinics, debt advice, housing support and mental health services.
One-to-one casework:
Supporting women to access accommodation, employment, benefits, sexual health services and primary care services as well as other specialist support within Bristol. We are also able to assist women with issues such as EU settlement, provide access to short-term emergency financial assistance and liaise with our network of local supporters to meet any other needs the women may have.

BELOVED REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE 12 MONTH PERIOD ENDED 31 MARCH 2022
Coffee shop visits:
For any women who would like to receive tailored, ongoing emotional and practical support.
Trips away and group activities:
We organise day trips and weekends away where the women can find space, decompress and begin the healing and recovery process.
During the 12 month period, ended 31st March 2022, Beloved was involved in the following activities:
-
Accommodation: We have provided accommodation support to nine women over the past year. This includes several who were able to access both temporary housing and permanent accommodation as a result of the support provided. The Covid-19 pandemic led to the closure of over half of the massage parlours within the city, making some of the women we support, homeless. As a result, we have supported women through the homelessness pathway in Bristol, into private rented accommodation and local authority housing. This has been facilitated by our team of skilled caseworkers supporting women to complete housing applications, writing supporting letters, assisting with appointments at letting agents, providing advocacy services when faced with challenges from the local authority and signposting onto specialist services for legal advice. In addition, we have started the process of developing a host homes model so that women who are unable to access local housing pathways and cannot afford their own accommodation, will be able to stay with a host whilst we continue to provide ongoing support.
-
Employment: Over the last year we have continued our partnership with Lovewell, a social enterprise that provides a six-month paid internship for women who have been exploited in the sex industry. The internship allows women the opportunity to learn how to manufacture luxury spa products such as candles and bath salts. They also complete a life skills course, and have a mentor for continued support once the internship comes to an end. Beloved assisted three women to access the course and provided ongoing practical and emotional support. Following the end of the course, Beloved has supported two of the three women into alternative employment. Both women were supported to update their CV’s, complete job applications and given mock interviews. We have also continued to support women who are not on the Lovewell course to access alternative college courses and other employment opportunities.
-
Debt/Financial Support: We partnered with a local church so that the women received a Christians Against Poverty (CAP) course tailored to their specific needs. In doing this, we were able to provide a space where the women did not feel judged and were able to identify areas where they need support as well as areas where they were already making positive financial decisions. We have also provided women with access to the hardship fund that we have, ensuring that women who are awaiting universal credit have financial support. Beloved was also able to partner with the Red Cross fund which provided women who were destitute, as a result of Covid-19, with three-months’ worth of money to buy food and other essentials. Our caseworkers have assisted women going through court processes regarding debt, given
3

sessions on budgeting and referred into local money and debt advice services, supported women to access benefits and successfully challenged benefit award decisions.
-
Mental and Physical Health: We have supported women to access community mental health services through advocacy at GP appointments as well as making direct referrals. We have also supported women at sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing appointments as well as advocating for commissioned services to meet the women in the parlours and provide onsite testing. The caseworkers have also supported women through forensic testing following sexual assault and ensured that women are getting support from external counselling provision. We also spend time with the women out in nature, seeking to use the benefits of the natural world to improve their mental health and general well-being.
-
Emotional and Spiritual Support: One of the biggest aspects of our work is to provide ongoing emotional support to our women. We are often the only people they are able to talk to about their work and so offering emotional support is an essential part of the work we do. We offer women weekly meetings to provide a space for them to share what is happening for them and opportunities to spend time out of the city. We also really value building relationships and community with each other, enabling the process of healing to begin. Where women have expressed an interest in spiritual support, we connect them into local churches who can continue with them on their spiritual journey.
-
Outreach: We continue to do twice monthly visits into the massage parlours in Bristol. Post Covid-19, the landscape has changed within the city, with less than half the number of parlours open as before. During the visits we offer a space for the women to talk and share their experiences. On occasions, it may not be convenient for the women for us to enter the parlour but we are still able to deliver our ‘goody bags’ which contain a cupcake, some toiletries and information regarding local services. We have also started to explore new forms of outreach.
-
Partnerships: We continue to develop partnerships with both statutory and voluntary agencies across Bristol. We have seen an increase in referrals from external agencies and have worked hard to build relationships of trust with these organisations to ensure a smooth and cohesive network of care for the women. We have also maintained and developed our relationships with local churches, appreciating their support and prayer.

“Beloved help women through difficult times who may have no other alternative to sex working and have helped me out so much after coming out of the sex industry."
‘One of the things I really admire about Beloved is that they don’t just focus on women who want to leave the parlours – they also support those who have to stay in the work, for one reason or another. Beloved make us all feel special.’

Finance
The charity received £137,757 in the reporting period and total expenditure was £141,353. Unrestricted funds at the end of the reporting period were £24,886.
During this financial year we have recruited and employed a new Director for Beloved. The Director brings creative vision and innovation to setting the strategic direction of Beloved, in collaboration with the charity’s Board of Trustees, to love and serve women in prostitution in Bristol and further afield.
Although we did not meet our income projections (income was lower than budget) for the financial year 21/22, we reduced our expenditure to ensure that Beloved was able to continue to deliver the essential support to the women who use our services.
Fundraising
Towards the end of the financial year we contracted an external fundraiser to write bids on a parttime basis. This has allowed our staff team to focus on their own areas of expertise in providing our services, as well as ensuring a well-planned fundraising strategy for the future.
We have, however, been able to carry across £44,764 into the new financial year.
